WD Red drives are the only way to go for NAS...

Why go to WD Red drives? They are designed to be used in NAS devices. Desktop drives do NOT have the error correction that NAS devices requires. This means that desktop drives can give an error in the NAS even if they are okay. Another factor is that NAS drives are designed with better balancing and also for continuous spin up and downs. When you have multiple drives in one device, the combined vibrations can wreck havoc. NAS drives are designed to prevent excessive vibrations. I prefer WD over Seagate because i have been getting more failures with Seagate drives than WD. NAS drives costs only about $20 more than desktop drives... To me, the slight premium is worth the peace of mind.

Drive is for storing all the files on all the computers in the house. Great quality drive just a bit slower that a standard desktop drive.

Solid monster drive to start an immense RAID

This drive is designed for home and small office RAID's, a balance of reliability and moderate speed. As you RAID more disks together it will get faster. These Red NAS disks have longer timeouts and are more fault tolerant than stand-alone disks because the RAID software is designed to make up disk errors until it declares a disk failure. A stand alone disk will report errors too often and appear to fail in a RAID environment when there is not a real repeatable fault.

I exclusively use WD RED and RED PRO drives for all of my NASes and similar use cases. These drives come with a great warranty and are more reliably than the GREEN and BLUE models.

I've tried WD, Toshiba and Seagate, the WD is the most reliable drive out there. Seagate is the worst and the Toshiba is not much better. I bought a dozen different WD drives and two failed. I bought four Toshibas and three died. I bought four Seagates all died...

Was accepted into my RAIDed Synology NAS with no issue and fast set up. Fast transfer rate. And according to NAS settings, maintains normal operating temperature. Not much more to ask for.

If you are building a NAS or replacing a drive in a NAS, the Red WD drives are the only way to go! I might even get the Pro next time as I've been very pleased.

It's suppose to be specially designed for RAID. I already have WD Blue in the same RAID 1 setup. Comparing those two, RED had higher temperature and more noisy. Transfer was about the same.

I bought 3 of these to build my media center. These drives run super quite in my Qnap NAS. Great drives and they come with a 3 year warranty from Western Digital which is one of the things you are paying for. i'll probably buy another one to max out my NAS and plan on using the 4th drive for Time Machine Backups as well. Still Debating at this time.

For the warranty alone, i would always buy the WD red drive. When i needed a 6TB, there was no question that i would take the red drive again. The green is fine too but if you have the extra to spend, go Red
