I have yet to use this little device to it's full capability, but so far, using it for Netflix and watching movies from a thumb drive is awesome!! It is user-friendly and I'm sure once I figure out all the other options to it, will enjoy it even more. I do like it's small and compact, don't need much room for it. My "con" of it needing an update as soon as it was install, took me by surprise, but on the other hand impressed me that it stays current. All around a good purchase and value.

This device is GREAT. It has played all the formats I can think of, MP3, MP4, MKV, AVI, DVD, and it covers all picture formats as well. It seem to work faster when directly connected to Ethernet as apposed to Wi-Fi, for online services. I was able to watch Netflix with no buffer issues at all. The only issue I had was leaving it in a paused state seemed to adversely affect sound, but a restart solved that. I just wish it had some free online access to TV stations to see old shows, which means if you need a browser this is not for you, but I hope someone has a hack that will give users browser access. I have not tried the "streaming" from your home network, I found it unnecessary with 2 USB ports, I just hook up a portable drive, and if I need to add files, I can use the 2nd USB to play or copy the content if I want it there for later. Side note: For setting up things like RSS, and username/password logins try a USB keyboard

Interface could have been better, system kind of responds slow. I bought this unit about 2 years ago as well but It has problem of losing sound (few seconds) while playing anything (audio/video) and it is happening alot. Also it acts weird while powering on and some time needs to power off and back on again. I have tried updating software but no use. I expect better quality from WD.

Device has great video quality. The device is great but when compare with the speed of Roku when switching between APPS and opening movies it just doesn't come close. Another plus is the ability to play movies, including AVI, from a NAS device.

When I went to Best Buy with the original intention of picking up a Roku box, I noticed this on the shelf next to it with the proclamation on the box that it would play your own files as well as playing services such as Netflix and Hulu Plus. I was surprised and delighted when I plugged my video drive in by the quality that I received. It was seamless to get started and to figure out how to work. The only drawback is that sometimes it is very slow to respond to the remote, often leaving a lag of thirty seconds or more between when you press a button and when it reacts to that command. But if you can find it in you to be patient when this occurs, you'll never be disappointed.

Streams all files super easy, sometimes need to shorten file names to appear but not a big deal. Netflix menu is really laggy browsing, actual videos play fine just menu is slow... could be app may be unit processor? But for what its made for it does perfect plays mkv not prob with any files ive thrown at it so far. I upgraded to this from old wdtv live unit.

I have owned this product for 2 years now and simply love it! I just recently purchased another unit for my brother, and he also loves it!!! It will play back on your PC or Big Screen TV practically any type of file downloaded or saved! Sometimes the unit does freeze, but a reset of the box brings it right back to life. Also works excellent when paired up with a WD External Hard Drive. Go out and by one today!!! You won't be disappointed!!!!

This is my 2nd WDTV purchase. I bought the WDTV to provide access for my flat screens to videos stored on hard drives and my jump drives. This little device can turn every TV into a net tv. Most net tv's do not have codecs to open a lot of the movie and video content out there. The WDTV provides the codecs for all my stored movies. It has 2 USB ports, so I can have my 2TB hard drive connected to one port, and I can plug my 32GB Jump Drive into the other. It also includes a hard connection to my internet as well as WIFI. The set up is just about hands free. Just be a little patient while it learns it's new environment. The menus are intuitive. It opens all my directories on my hard drive. All available movies are sorted alphabetically w/o the user needing to search thru the drive. For the money, this is an awesome little product. I just wish that it could find my video sources on my NAS Drive so that I could have a single source in my home for all my Movies to be accessed from any/all TVs.

This is the only media player that I've found that not only streams Hulu, Netflix, Youtube and a plethora of other services, it also natively supports just about every file format or video container you can need. It connects to file shares over a network and streams video files from you local network storage. You can plug in a hard drive and pull files straight from the drive. It is missing Amazon Prime and HBO Go, but that's not the fault of the player, that's the fault of those service providers choosing not to support it. The developers are very active with the community and they roll out updates once every couple of months. Some updates are good, some slow this thing down to a crawl. Overall I've had very little issue with it. I liked it enough to buy a second one for my bedroom TV as well.

This media player works great to watch movies and listen to music from my portable hard drive. It is very easy to use and install and is pretty small in size, so it does not take up much room with my other electrical components.

The unit I have most of the time can't open files when I first plug an USB key in with newly added video files. But the problem will go away after I turn off then on the power again. I am not sure it can do .wav but once in a while I have a few .mp4 files that can't be loaded, I will say 85% of the time it worked. It can't open .webm but I do not expect it to anyway. The resolution is good while I loaded my own wallpaper. Netfix and youtube is slow to load and interface is clunky. For that I use my logitech revue. I will keep it just for what it does better than the alternative products on the market, which is playing video clip. I hope it can function with a faster speed. Now it is compatible to USB 2.0 external devices only.

My family and I are now FINALLY in the process of 'Cutting The Cord' with regard to Cable TV. Our strategy will encompass an 'Over-The-Air' (OTA) HD Antenna so that all of our TVs can now get FREE local basic TV in premium HD, A Roku Box for the Living Room (Main TV Area) and Roku Sticks for TVs in private rooms (ie., Bed Rooms, etc) for streaming Premium Content to our TVs, and lastly the WDTVLive to be able to play our private Digital Movie collection. In short, the WDTVLive has been able to play every format that I've thrown at it (.mp4, .mkv, .avi, etc.). To my complete surprise, it was even able to play .ISO backups of my favorite Blu-Ray movies. This thing is perfect. I can plug-in a USB Flash Drive or USB External HDD to it and play movies/content from there, or it can access movies/content shared over the network via SMB/Samba. No more having to connect my Laptop or other PC to the TV with an HDMI cable and have to play movies through VLC Media Player. The quality is amazing and being able to pause/rewind/fast-forward with the included remote is awesome. This thing kicks-butt...period!!

WD TV Live Media Player Makes old tv smart

Makes old tv " smart" . Can easily switch between tv sets in less than a minute,Just unplug power and AV cable ,Then plug into next one. All computers at my house see it and can send movies to it through the router and the movies play okay . Has usb ports to plug in external hard drive or a memory card reader or usb drives .You can subscribe to services to stream content if you chose to .I mostly just turn dvds into movie files and drop on usb drive or stream stuff from the computers to it .I'm sure theres a limit to what it will play but I haven't found one yet .would be nice if it was cheaper then I'd get more and wouldn't have to move them but compared to upgrading 4 tvs not that high .You are still watching on your old tv so it does not improve on picture Don't know why but ended up putting usb dongle in to hook to router first time ,Tried an hour out of the box no luck ,Then turned off pulled dongle and no problems since ,no clue why .Would like to add large external drive and then lots of movies A to Z pull them up then watch without looking through 10 dvd cases or folders

Great wd live, worked right out of the box and was able to view all my movies with no problems. I love the way bestbuy did the price comparison and gave me the difference right away. I also love that there is an App for the wd live through your cell phone. So no worries if i misplace the remote cause i have my smartphone as a remote also.

Love this device, I bought a second one. I can stream my music to my stereo in the other room from my PC or the internet. I can stream my HD movies from my PC to my tvs. Its really small. Able to get rid of my blue ray player and replace with this little device. Going to get two more for each of the other rooms in the coming months.

Purchased same product over a year ago, for personal media file play, mainly home video stored on WD 1 TB external hard drive. Didn't not have luck, however due to my own fault. So bought it again a bargain really for one hundred dollars, and plugged in my usb external again and it discovered each single file on there in about 45 minutes this is 240 GB of home movies over 5000 files. Previously problem was that files did not play continuously, so I did research on WD website and found that if i push play on folder itself then it will play so which seems like a little deal but it is huge for us, since this is a very big part of what our children watch for TV, home movies. I have all recording by year and month. So it can shuffle the entire year or even all of the recordings it just depends where i push the play button. Pushing play on one file will play that one file. Also plays all music too have over 31000 songs, and have options for netflix and other apps. Overall very pleased, great product for price and just very very simple to set up not to mention the wireless wi fi.

It's probably at the end of its life cycle (if not done already) but still plays all media files you have and more. Easy to set up and works flawless with a NAS, video playback is smooth over wifi. Layout is outdated though and seems very basic, there are themes out there but still limited on what it changes. Overall great product if you are looking for a hassle free streamer, beats ATV, roku and others in that regard.

I had been interested in setting up a DNLA server for quite a while. The Best Buy rep pointed out this device. The price initially attracted me. Every other comperable device was over $100. Out of the box the device was easy to install and worked immediately. I was able to designate my DNLA server and it connected right away. We purchase many movies through VUDU and other services as well as Blue ray and DVD. I store digital copies on my server and the WD TV LIve Media Player shows them flawlessly. The only complaint I have is the time it takes for the device to find the right resolution for your TV. The documentation does not warn you and it can seem like the device is hung or not booting when the power switch is on. It is actually trying different resolutions to find the best one for your set. Don't panic. All in a good purchase.
