Good streaming quality, lots of channels.

I purchased this mostly to stream video from my PC to my TV. After some minor initial setup hurdles (creating a shared directory, adding directory to the WD TV) that may take some work if you know nothing about computers, this is the easiest thing in the world to use. I can stream all of my media from my PC, and there's a large number of channels for streaming content (some obviously require a subscription)...so I can watch all of my Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, etc from one place. Streaming quality is very good with only the occasional pause to buffer (to be expected). Overall very happy with this and definitely would recommend to others.

After I figured out how to connect to a hard drive that was not directly linked to it, I had no more problems. It was easy to figure out if you had any idea what you were looking for

Works well for videos on network servers

This product has been a godsend for viewing videos on my network server. I no longer have to hook up a laptop or computer to my television to view movies or videos. The hookup was simple and the remote was easily cloned to my Harmony remote. All is good.

    Great for our Training videos

WE were able to start a training channel on our tv system in the hospital using the WDTV to play a group of MP4 videos which repeat continuously. The unit works very well. When using a flash drive, The video material must be converted to MP4 first which takes some skill using a converter program.

This was basically a plug and play format. I had some issues with it not playing WMV files other than that it is great for what I need. I have yet to attach it to the network, I mainly use the usb. I would suggest if you use the usb, get at least a 16 GB usb drive and format it to hold large files.

Its a great a product, I have been using it for last 4 months and works great. 1. It can play almost any format. 2. Accessible through mobile and pc remote 3. Easily detects media servers and plays without any lag 4. Apps are cool and works great 5. Hard disk attached to the device is also accessible through other network devices but it is very slow 6. Has a external keyboard support I wish to have following features as well 1. A internet browser app to browse any thing 2. Support for bluetooth head set

    Great For Streaming

The Western Digital WD TV Live Media Player was purchased to replace a play station 3 that was stolen. I don't really play video games and dont rent movies, so this was a more economical choice. It was apparent after installation that this was a GREAT choice. Easy to setup, it found my DNS-323 (with all my movies, tv shows, and music) and streams them flawlessly. The controls are simple to use and easy to understand. A great choice for anyone looking to add network streaming of downloaded content.

    Great NAS, depending on use/experience

I would not be using this still if it wasn't for the openstora project teaching me how to root this. By default you can't change share names/set in depth permissions, etc... But with a tiny bit of linux cli savvy, you can follow the openstora (google it) wiki and gain root access to the device. this enables you to ssh in and customize the samba config, install applications (such as transmission), disable some of the services they have doing crazy stuff (like VPN'ing out so that you can use their web interface). I advise caution when you get into the openstora stuff as it almost certainly voids warranties and -could- brick your device (a bad combination) I use this NAS to simultaneously stream video 720p h264 files to 3 different WD Live set top boxes as well as some basic file storage for 3 computers on my LAN. It doesn't seem to miss a beat. I gave it high marks because I think it works good as a basic NAS for beginners, but it works better for advanced users willing to risk the root.

Got two of these, one for basement and one for bedroom. It streams everything in my video collection (mostly dvd iso, mkv) perfectly. Nice gui. Make sure you update the firmware. Highly recommended.

be cautious when deciding on a product like this

this product is an excellent solution in theory. what an awesome way to get internet tv and stream your own videos from your network. Well, here's the deal, I bought one of these and it had some bugs in the firmware that the manufacturer was aware of and was suppposedly trying to fix, so I bought another one for the bedroom. Then a Firmware update came out and now I have major issues with both systems playing videos from my system and streaming video from netflix. After contacting the support center for WD, they decided to split hairs on my problem rather than address the issues at hand. I can only tell you the system is intermittent, but its cool when it does work, and I would not recommend this product to anyone at this time

    Why doesn't everybody have one?

Face it. Running around looking for your favorite DVD or Blu-Ray is a pain and it really hurts when the kids ruin a disc. This little device allows you to copy all your movies to an external hard drive or home server and play them at the touch of a button on your TV. It plays every format that I've thrown at it and also includes apps for NetFlix, Hulu, and many others. Its the best $100 you'll spend on a media player, except maybe the $199 for the WD TV Live Hub which includes a 1TB hard drive.

    Excellent, fully-featured device

Ready access to home network and stores of music, photos, and videos on local computers sets this product apart from the competition. Its interface is relatively simple, but can be confusing for some functions. In just the few weeks I have owned it, I have experienced some odd behavior, but was able to resolve the issues by unplugging the device and resetting it (a nuisance). Installation is super easy, and having the ability to pull up videos from other computers in the house to watch on the big screen is a fantastic convenience over being forced to transfer the files to a flash drive or similar, as may be the case with competing devices.

    Best settop box out there

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have recently bought a ROKU box also and this box is best by far. It plays the most video formats, has all the online services you will ever need, has easy to set up WI-FI to connect to your wireless network, ethernet to connect to a wired network (best performance), an optical output (roku does not have) so you can listen thru your entertainment system, an HDMI video output for full 1080p. I love the full repeat feature you can enable so it plays all our stored videos, then just keeps playing them. this is the box you want!

Was using my xbox 360 to play downloaded movies that were stored on my computer, but they all wouldn't play. This western digital media player took care of that and plays mkv files wonderfully over my wireless N connection. My router is even upstairs away from this box and still plays fine! Love it.

this is a great media player,..probably the best !

This is probably the best media player out there right now aside from its bigger brother with the built in HDD. It has tons of features and is compatible with windows able to stream pics and video on network, for the price you can spiff up your media room for under $100. a must have for any media/theater room. Add a 4TB HDD and you still hav room for one more!. As with all electronics..it has its hiccups every now and then when not all the cover art show on the media folder at times ...and it doesnt make me coffee...but I'll keep it because its that good!

good unit, no cinavia so far, plays everything I've tried so far, and surprisingly strong wifi strength way up in my bedroom where it's usually weak. will report back as i use it more. only have had it for one day. got it cuz my blu ray players firmware is now infected with cinavia, what a waste. i believe the 1.12.14 firmware was October 2012.

I have this thing connected via cat wire, not wireless. So far it's played everything I've thrown at it. No problems what so ever. It's updated itself 3 times already and no problems what so ever. At first I had an issue with my server showing up properly but it wasn't the WD TV, it was my router itself, which i figured out afterwards. Plays all my movies, every format i have, even formats that gives me problems playing on my PC. Home videos look great. Looking to pick up another one for the family room. I have not linked Netflicks on it or any other service but it does have a bunch to offer. My intention was to play home videos and movies I had on my network...

I've had this player for 29 days before I returned it for another one. The first unit would keep dropping back to the menu while playing movies and TV shows. It would make you reselect your selection again then resume. I was sure that it was just a bad unit but unfortunately the second unit does the same thing!! I used an older WD media player before I bought this one and never had this problem. You would think the WD would IMPROVE a new unit not the case here. I am very disappointed in the new unit. I can’t decide if I'm going to keep the second unit or return it and get my money back. I undated the firmware and still no help!

I like being able to get online with netflix and pandora, but what I really like is being able to watch the movies on my laptop on my hdtv. Only complaint: there is a known problem with the audio cutting out when playing .avi's.
