The worst piece of equipment ever!!

The piece of equipment only worked intermittently. Called WD customer service and they agreed to send me a new one, they gathered a bunch of info to do so, only the find out they want my credit card info in the end. Instead of standing by their product, they wanted me to have another $100 in this deal. No way! I THREW IT IN THE TRASH! I' LL NEVER BUY ANOTHER WD EVER AGAIN!!!!

Well I wish I could say this was amazing but I can't...... pros will play almost any video format. Cons slow load times for everything form reading a flash drive, external harddrive, Netflix was a joke every time I launched I had to re-input user info as well as took about 2 min to load video. I am a big western digital fan and had the western digital media player and loved it.

I really wanted this to work , the price was right, the instructions easy to follow, beatiful interface & menu layout. problem is that as soon as i try to play movie from usb it say unable to play, not matter what type of file it would say that then it got worse! i did the firmware update & still same error , even on youtube called them & tech told me to return to store because at the moment wd does not have a solution to it,... get the boxee instead

    Sadly Equal to the Rest

As with Boxee -- by far the worst of the offenders -- and several versions of Roku, the WD Live Media Player fails miserably because the developers are trying so hard to get our money that they really don't care to focus on what we're paying for. I've tried three versions of this device, and inevitably there are fundamental problems -- not annoyances, but serious problems: For example, the WD cannot stream MLB.TV without crashing the entire system, several times per game. Another example, the "media library" functionality is buggy at best, and at worst freezes the thing to the point that you need to unplug, restart, and give up on having a media library. If you turn off the media library, the device works fine for browsing and playing network media, including video playlists, something others are lacking. As with all of these providers, they are all clamoring to gouge the market with Product, but none of them are bothering to deliver quality in this pursuit. (This being said, Boxee is by far the worst, as it has the most problems, the least support, and is the most expensive. The WD seems to be at least a very stable local media player.) If you don't stream much and are fine with watching local media, this might be for you.

    Really????

Stay away and save yourself triips, headache, and time. I bought this because It said taht I could access my files from the network. I debated buying apple tv because it has airplay and can play from my iphone, but it doesn't have pandora. I also thought about roku because it has a lot of channel including pandora but it doesn't play from my iphone and it doesn't have youtube(wtf). So, I thought about WD because it can get pandora and it can access my files and I thought I could play my itunes. My whole thinking was eventually cancelling my sirius xm account and just stream pandora AND be able to access my itunes. Well, it can access my itunes, but only each individual file. It won't play the playlists, at least what I have discovered. Also, i couldn't access my computer at first. I don't have my computer password protected so I thought I would just get right in. NOT! I discovered I had to password protect my profile on the computer and then use those credentials on the WD. What a pain! That just means I have to mess with a password on my computer. I am the only one at home!!!!! Whatever.... I may just end up getting apple tv and stream pandora from my iphone since I can play my iphone on apple tv thru airplay

Hey. If it doesn't work, It doesn't work. I wanted to use it to stream SlingBox. It worked, but keeps dropping connection. Like every two minutes. Tried their support. They just told me there was nothing wrong with their box. Great for you! So I took it back to the store.

Not so great with Windows 7 64 bit network shares

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The player has a beautiful interface that is well designed and boot up time is super-fast. It also now has built in wireless. If you have a local hard drive with your media, this works amazing. Now the bad: This player will not connect to a Windows 7 64 bit machine network share. This seems to be a common issue with WD media players. A quick web browser search shows hundreds of people with the same issue, with no definite solution in site, just a lot of try this, or do that, but nothing works. The media server does NOT work well either. It takes making multiple configuration changes to your Windows 7 machine for media server to work. Also very strange, the unit claims to be DLNA compatible, no options in the menus, and will not connect to my DLNA server. This is a horrible media box if you intend to connect to a network drive or share. Avoid at all cost, the network share, and media server does not work with Windows 7 64 bit so there is no way to access your files. WD should be ashamed for putting this piece of S on the market before working out all the bugs. Will be returning this for sure.

    Doesn't work with Windows 7.

This seemed like the perfect device for my needs. I read the reviews at bestbuy.com and couldn't wait to get it. I plugged it in and it connected to my network immediately, very nice. The problem is it won't recognize my computer. It sees the router just fine. I messed with it for about two hours during which time I found many people online with the same problem. I called tech support and spent just under two hours with them to no avail. They told me to call back on Monday to get bumped to level two. I did. I spent just over two hours with level two giving them full remote access to my system to make things go faster. They tried everything I had tried and many things I hadn't. The guy seemed very knowledgable and friendly but finally even he gave up. He recommended doing more research online to find out how/if anyone had resolved the issue. Screw that, I am just returning it. If as many people can't make it work as it appears online, this product should never have been released.

I have had two of these units and both had really laggy interfaces. Like you push a button and it takes a few secs to move, or you push a button and it dose nothing and you have to push it a few times to get it to work. also the remote will just stop working for no reason and then work a few hours later or maybe even a few days later. This is really bad because this device does not work without the remote. it has no controls on the box. also it freezing all the time when doing everything, watching, browsing selection, moving around in the interface. and i mean bad freeze where you have to reset it. at this point my remote works but the device doesn't register it so i just gave up. now i have just started using my ps3 and it works much better wish i never would have bought this device. WD should not release a device that has not been tested.

I bought this about a year ago while on a trip to put some videos on it while on the trip. You have to have a Decrypter to install video on this hard drive. We watch Netflix alot and while this unit will do that, it freezes up quite often once it gets hot. It has many updates and after update it copies all the video's on the hard-drive so you have 2-3-4 of each video instead of 1. I've tried to put jpg and bmp files on it but have never been able to view it on the TV. I does play back the video on the hard drive well but thats about it.
