Good Media Streaming Box

Getting the box running with my internal media servers was easy. The device will read network shares/drives as well as DLNA servers. The device also features 2 USB 2.0ports to play flash drives and the like. The device needed an immediate firmware upgrade which was accomplished quickly and easily.
Setting up Netflix and VUDU was a bit more problematic as the only method for inputting accounts and passwords tended to lose characters and add unwanted ones and seemed to take for ever.
Overall, this has been a good media player.

I have the 1st generation WD media player and decided to get the WD TV Live Media player for the Netflix app and the upgraded interface. Got it right before we went traveling to an area lacking Internet access and cell access. Brought the movies all packed on a usb drive and was able to watch what we wanted. Nice device.

Goodbye Apple TV, this can play anything!

I originally had an Apple TV 3, hoping for a jailbreak to come. When it did not come, I decided to give this a try. I was NOT disappointed. This can play any format I give it. It has two USB ports to plug in flash or hard drives, as well as the ability to connect to a home networked hard drive.
This can play any formats I throw at it. Instead of sticking with strictly MP4 for Apple, it can play MKV, MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, MP3 etc. The device is also quick and not sluggish like other products.
The only downside is that the interface is a bit bland for movies, but you can add custom themes to it and make it your own. Also, if you heavily rely on apps, then it may limit you, but I rarely use the apps anyways with a Smart TV.
If you're on the fence between this, a Roku, or an Apple TV, and apps are not a big concern, without a doubt this is the best bang for your buck!

I am a long time customer for the WD TV line of products. WD is improving its products continuously at each new model that is introduced to the market. This last model, the WD Live Media Player is a very convenient and reliable media player for the movie enthusiast who has a lot of files stored in his hard drive. It recognizes all kind of video files as well as the audio tracks and subtitles. If you have to choose a media player, do not forget to put the WD TV Live on the top of your wish list. Sturdy and well built. Very recommended!

Good, but not Perfect

Let me first explain why I purchased this product: I have the Apple TV and love it. The Apple TV and WD TV are very similar in operation and features with one big negative towards the Apple TV. Apple DOES NOT loop videos you create and the WD TV DOES. I'm in need of a video player that will loop continuously. I know that some smart TVs will using a usb, but I would rather spend $100 and use the good TV I have now and not $$$ or $$$$ for a new TV that has this feature. Especially when WD TV says it will loop continuously. In a booth at a trade show is where I use the WD TV. It seemed to be the best bang for the buck...until I started to use it.
Here's what went wrong with WD TV: Yes, it would loop, but it would stop the video 3/4 of the way through and start over. After it looped twice, it would go back to the menu where I pull the file from. So, It didn't look good in my booth to see that menu. So, I would stop talking with potential clients, select file and push play again, so those walking by could see video and perhaps make them stop to talk further. I know you're saying something was wrong with my file or format. Well, that would be a good argument except it's what I do everyday and I checked before and after. File was good! It is a 30 min long video file. I only use the WD TV for this and so I can't speak on other issues of interaction with this product.
Would I buy it again? Yes! But, it's not perfect. You get what you pay for! I know there's other, better, more expensive ways of getting a digital signage type video to play on a TV....Hope this review has helped!?

I have two of these WD lives. They play just about any movie format. One of them overheats and stops working, so I raised it from the table to allow air to flow below it.

I would recommend this device. Easy to setup. Used a portal drive to connect it to show movies, videos, pictures. It reads all formats. It has other functions for connecting to other movie source I did not use them yet.

At first I was looking for a smart blue ray player, but after researching all my options I opted for this instead. Why go out and rent or buy physical discs when you can stream just what you want when you want it. The unit was fairly easy to set up. Following the on screen directions had the unit up and running in short order. Once it found my files I ran it through its paces. Wireless playback was spot on for anything it found.
I`m still learning the ins and outs of how to personalize it to my needs. I`m not the most tech savvy person and I found the user forums helpful. I`m looking forward to learning just what this little box can do. All your personal media and more in a box so small its easy enough to move from room to room or travel with you.

I own an Apple TV2, and needed something similar for a non-HDMI (for now) TV. I bought a Roku but found it was WAY too geared towards TV services and had really clunky FF and REW functionality (it was slow and didn't show what you were scanning through, so you had to *guess* on how far forward/back - awful!) I read a little more on the web, returned the Roku, and bought this, instead. WOW! - what a difference! I'm really enjoying it. It easily deals with every video format in my collection (and I have MANY) and has no problem converting on the fly to show up properly on my old SD 4:3 Television. Also, when I do upgrade that TV in future, I'm sure it will handle the HDMI even better. All in all, for $100, this has got to be the #1 streaming device. Love it!

Fed up with sky high cable bills, we cancelled our cable and opted for this unit and a Netfix account. I was unsure if we could find a unit adaptable to such an old, analog TV, but it works wonderfully. It is a bit slow when you first turn it on and navigate through the options, but once the program plays there is absolutely no problem. The money that we save from cable will go to buy a new digital TV!

If you just want to plug a hard drive in and watch movies this is great. fully compatible with all video codecs ive thrown at it. mkv, avi, xvid, mp4. but the interface is way outdated and slow. My current recomendation is a little more work, but go with the roku and run plex on it. (your pc needs to be adequate as a plex server for a clean stream)

While there are more expensive media players out there, this has been by far the best one I've used. I was looking at the Popcorn Hour A400, but at almost $300 with tax and shipping, I decided against it and got the WD TV instead. While it doesn't play Blu-ray ISOs, it easily plays Blu-ray MKVs and MakeMKV allows you to transcode DTS-HD MA to FLAC, which the WD TV outputs. Note that if you use DLNA, you won't get these high quality audio outputs, you need to use network share or via a hard drive. This has Netflix and tons of popular online services, of which the Popcorn Hour (and other players) doesn't have. A must have if you're looking to cut cable or have tons of Blu-rays you want to put on disk.

When my second generation iPod pooped out, I needed a replacement to stream YouTube videos to my basement gym older TV. Having previously purchased two Apple TV units, I did not have an HDMI input for my older TV. The WD TV Live Media Player offered that option. Not only could I get YouTube videos, but I could also watch NetFlix and Hulu Plus content effortlessly, with no delays, despite having the router on the second floor. I am delighted with this product. If I ever upgrade to a HDTV in the basement, I will still be able to use this item.

I have never used another device (game consoles, media players, smart TV's, etc.) other than a PC that can play as many video formats as this device does. I only use it for local network files and Netflix (Hulu Plus is missing a great deal of content with any media player vs using it on a PC).
I have been using it for about 3 months now and always get quick access to local network media and the menus are easy to navigate.
With Netflix it does "hang" when accessing selections often and sometimes I have to power cycle it to recover. But once I get a program selected it plays it as good as any PC. When accessing local network files I have yet to have a delay.
Love their iPhone and Android app.

I love my wd tv live media player. I can connect it to my external hard drive which is the best! I love it as a streaming device to watch netflix and listen to pandora. I know there are other devices that do this as well, but with the bonus of being able to connect to my external, this was the purchase I definitely wanted to make. There is even an app where you can download the remote onto your phone, which for a person like me who is constantly searching for the remote, is awesome.

The WD TV Live works perfectly with the movies that are stored on my 3TB HD. Setup was very easy, however, navigating the menu was cumbersome. The GUI could use some refinement. It has performed as expected after reading reviews prior to purchase.

I have bought and tested over 4 different media streaming devices to play movies from my NAS drive. All failed miserably and could not handle the HD quality files. This unit will play heavy duty 10gig and above files flawlessly. It's definitely not a HTPC but for the price what can you expect. This one is a keeper!
