Simple Media player

I have tried several different types of media players from the old Western Digital to Xtremer or Cinematube and home theater PCs. If you're looking for something that will give you the ability to turn on and off the hard drives when the unit turns on and off this is the one.
It has cover views for going through your movies it's very easy to use and set up.
Who'd up is very fast after the first set up whereas the others take longer and it has full networking.

I attached this to my Home Theater system.
I have video and music drives plugged into an NAS which connects to this wirelessly. I also plug a portable external drive into the USB ports for quick access. I also access Netflix and Pandora thru this. This is the only media device that does all these things.

I picked this for my Dad for Christmas. He was trying to stream files from a hard drive on his network to his TV and couldn't get it to work. This device says that it will do so without software. That said it picked the files from my pogoplug up right away, but I can't seem to get it to read the hard drive that is attached to the router.
My wife gave me a Roku for Christmas so I can compare them pretty well. I got the Roku 2 XS. The WD Live is a little sluggish compared to the Roku and I love the RF remote on the Roku, but the files from my pogoplug work great on the WD Live. Both are waaaaay better then the apps built in to the Philips BD player we have. If you have a library of videos, music, etc. on a pogoplug that you want to stream I recommend the WD Live, otherwise get a Roku.

It is a very good product. It gave me access to my external hard drive without the use of my PC. I found it easy to use ( but I like gadgets). However, it was not counter intuitive for my wife, so I had to spend some time to teach her. It can be made a little bit more user friendly.

Looked at the Roku, Apple TV, Sony Media player and other media players. Even though most of them offered pretty much the same streaming options (e.g. Hulu Plus, Netflix, et.), the WD Live was the one that really lets you take advantage of your online movie collection. I have converted a lot of my Blu-Ray and DVD collections to .mkv and .avi files so I can watch them on my tablet. I also store them on my portable drive where I can watch them elsewhere. Since my collection is stored on the drive, I don't have to worry about getting up to change movies when I'm done watching one. Just go to the menu, and select the next one you want to watch. The WD Live has the advantage because it allows you play almost any type of media file on your drive. The others are extremely limiting. The UI may not be the most friendly option but that does not bother me because as long as I can get to my files to watch them that is all I care about

I spent a lot of time looking at reviews, and researching media streamers. I picked this one because I think it has the best features. I wanted something I could move to any TV in the house, and stream Netflix or watch videos from my PC. I also bring it to work for lunch time viewing using our in work WiFi. I think for what it costs; it's a great deal. I am very satisfied, and would highly recommend this to anyone.

This device is great! I've owned this for over a year and haven't had any issues. I even bought one as a gift.
This device will has played any file i have tried (mkv, avi, mpg, mp3, etc...)
This unit will stream files from a win xp pc. Using win 7 to stream is much more difficult.
I purchased a wireless keyboard to use when browsing youtube, just makes it a little easier.
The only problems i ever had with this device were caused by bad hdmi cable and my wifi network. The WD player has worked flawlessly.

It works well. I don't like the fact it doesn't come with instructions or the ability to load new apps. I think I may go with an android media server in the future. It really does need a manual to understand the file system. Once set up family uses it without issue.

I have 1 connected to our main tv with 2 hard drives connected to it and another in our bedroom with both tied to the network. We can stream from our computers or the 2 hard drives to anything on the network. You can also play games and use pandora with it. It is a great product.

This works exactly as advertised. Bought it to install in the bedroom. We have a self built HTPC in the living room that has much more capabilities than the WD-Live. But for use in the bedroom it is exactly what we needed to stream movies and videos from our NAS or to access Netflix and Youtube. Set up was very easy. It has a very small form factor which is good for the WAF. I do wish that it would move through the menu screens a bit faster. I'm not a fan of the remote and tend to use the Android App as the remote. Never had any problems with the Android app.
Overall, I would recommend for basic use. I would not recommend it for home theater use as it just doesn't have the capabilities.

We bought this hub, looking for a replacement of a basic WD TV Player. Work fine since the first moment, and the firmware was updated once the wifi settings were adjusted. The great compatibility of media files makes this a very good option to stream recorded shows, movies, clips, and my family is able to watch our movies stored in our main pc. Totally compatible with Windows-based networks/OS, is a great source of entertainment, and an every-day complement to our 46" LED TV.

This thing is great. I plugged it in and it was connected to the network almost instantly. It plays all of the files that I have on my computer and I can attach a hard drive to it that I can move files to or from! The thing is great and I highly recomend! The only thing that I think is missing is the ability to use Amazon Instant Video, come on WD and Amazon get on that!!!!!!!

Nice, Easy and Intuitive Media Player

I really like the WD TV Live. This is my third one. The new menu and layout is much nicer on this unit. Much like the WD TV Hub. I have mine connected via ethernet so I can't speak for the quality of the WIFI.
The only negatives I can think of are when using the get info feature for each movie, the movie poster is not always the correct one. I'm sure there is a workaround. Also, when getting info on TV episodes, it will label episode 1 as "1" instead of "01". This is a problem when viewing the season list with more than 10 episodes. It will display them in the following order. 1, 10, 11, 12... 2, 20... 3, etc. The should label them 01, 02, ...10, 11, 12, etc. This way everything is in correct order in the list. There might be a way to edit a file and fix this too. Other than those two mild annoyances, I love this product.

Excellent device to stream your media collection

I would recommend this device only in a situation where you have a lot of your own files that you want to play on your TV. The slow interface makes it a chore to use it for things like netflix. Also, the programs offered are pretty limited, so you will likely not be using many of them. Most importantly though, It will play any file fine without any problems. This include 1080p mkv files. I found that the easiest way to stream my videos was to plug in my 1TB external hard drive and just stream from that. You can use network share, but it may only work flawlessly if it is hard wired to your computer. I also like how the "gallery" view will download movie posters, stills, and information for your downloaded files. If you're an avid torrent-user for TV Shows and HD movies, I would definitely recommend this product.

With access to streaming services like Netflix and Hulu Plus, and ability to play from USB hard drive, this little black box is a great addition to the home theater system. Plus it's small and easy to connect, which makes it portable. I've taken it to hotels and friends' homes. Only HDMI cable and power cord to hook up and you're good to go.

I was looking for a product that I could run SlingPlayer on. I have a gym in my house but it's in a room that I can't run cable to. I connected an Apple TV to it but in order to connect to my slingbox I need to first run it on an iPhone and "airplay" it to the Apple TV. Same goes with the Roku 3 and chromecast won't do it. This product works perfectly since SlingPlayer runs natively on the device. I am very happy

Good Media Server for the house

The device is used to stream media content that I've got on a RAID Server. I've got a bunch of Movies and shows I've recorded in MP4 format. My other streamed servers, PS3 and DVD player didn't support this format. I'm now able to stream these to my TV.
The Media Content is still fairly weak. It does have Hulu and Netflix as well as some others, but I'm looking for Media Content that would allow me to replace my Cable Provider. It does have Wall Street Journal. there are about 10 good Streaming Content providers and about 30 that are just a waste. It's getting closer to what I want.
What I want is an environment where I only buy the content I want. I want to kill the 500 channels of stuff with no value for 5 to 10 that have value.
