i was not expecting to like this that much but it was really good speilberg never fails

What a surprise. I went into it thinking, okay, here's another poor attempt by Hollywood at a remake of a classic musical. The songs seemed fresh with a wonderful performance by Rachel Zegler as Maria. If you had a chance to see her on SNL, you know she has the most beautiful voice. I highly recommend.

Remake of West Side Story is awesome! Musicals aren't as popular as they were decades ago, but this one may change that! We need less violent movies and this accomplished it.

Great video, great story, great opportunity to talk about in school.

It was fun to watch. I dont see it having much rewatchability. The score was nice and the singing good, the songs were like the stage musical. The speaking parts were longer than I expected, but maybe i just misremembered the stage musical from years ago. Worth it if you’re a fan of West Side Story for sure.

Very Impressed with this remake. Steven Spielberg is such a Great Director and I didn't even know that he directed it until the end. Bravo!!!

I remembered the original movie with great respect for the composer, lyricist and choreographer and for the many Academy Awards it got that year. Remakes are not always easy, but I must hand Spielberg much credit for this undertaking for his choice of cast, the desolate street scenes of NYC about to be updated without consideration for those uprooted, and the wonderful recreation of the score & the excellent voices used. Tony and Maria have beautiful voices, and for Chita Rivera was created a unique cameo appearance that was perfect for her. The Spielberg vision for unique camera shots was truly evident, and though the new gang choreography was more athletic rather than ballet inspired (it was more realistic), and the M/F street dancing was very similar to "In the Heights". This whole production was a warm way to deal with awful living conditions. I think you will find it appealing, yet faithful to its original creators. Music and video qualities were A+.

Great story telling! In this version you get character development. A very talented cast. Loved it!

Slipcover was damage but the film was excellent in it own right with very nice visuals which is no surprise cus it directed by Steven Spielberg

West Side Story (a remake of a 1961 film based on a musical) is inspired by Romeo and Juliet, but transposed into the context of gang conflict in 1950's New York. I recall the original movie fondly from when I was a kid in the 1980's, but haven't watched it for decades, which may have been optimal for seeing Spielberg's remake. I could appreciate the affection and respect Spielberg showed for the original, without obsessing over each minor change. I loved the songs from the original, which have been largely carried over intact. The acting and dancing is top-notch, and although the dancing may have been de-emphasized a bit compared to the original, it still colors the entire experience. From what I can remember of the original, this version places a greater emphasis on showing the Puerto Rican point of view, which helps bring out the inherent tragedy even more forcefully. Rita Moreno (who is an executive producer) has a new character who fits into the movie beautifully. Overall, this seems like the ideal remake -- true enough to the original to be a treat for fans, while different enough to justify its existence.

This is such a great movie- enjoyed more than the original. Great price for family fun

Great musical movie. The 4K image is sharp, and the sound is fantastic.

This movie is almost as good as the original. I recommend it.

When I first heard that this was being remade, I thought: What's the point of remaking a classic? But then I saw this and thought: Okay this totally works! I think Speilberg has done a brilliant job and Tony Kushner's script is excellent IMO! But I think this time the casting is PERFECT! Plus the fact that Oscar winner Rita Moreno is back in a newly created role written especially for her is the cherry on top! I really, REALLY enjoyed this film! One of my favorite scenes in the original is the AMERICA sung on the rooftop (even thought it was totally shot in a studio)! This time exterior locations are used giving the entire number a more modern feel. Is it better than the original? Who can say? It's just differen, but I loved it! "Anita's gonna get her kicks Tooo-night...."

Wonderful movie. I've seen more than once. I love it

A powerful retelling. I hesitated to experience this film because I love the 1961 film so much, but after looking into it more I learned this isn't a remake of that film, instead it is another film based on the same source material, the play from 1957. The play has been done countless times, with different performances, different choreography, different directors, different actors. If there is more than one stage version, why not have more than one film version? And I'm glad I gave it a chance! It is great!!! I love the original film, and this movie doesn't change that, but to see a different director tackle a film adaptation of the 1957 play is exciting and great! P.S. I loved every bonus features on this disc. I enjoyed watching them all!

a realy good remake of one of the greatest musicals ever made

The 4k UHD presentation on this disk is visually excellent and the sound is exceptional. The movie itself is a much more gritty and realistic portrayal that the artistic and stagey 1960s movie. In this version, the gang members are physically more menacing, rough-and-tumble dudes, not ballet dancers. Spielberg has assembled some remarkable imagery and moves the narrative at a brisk pace. Although we know how the story will end even before the opening credits, the cast effectively animates the characters with believable motivation and emotion and we care what happens to them. Highly recommended.
