It's rare that a 2000's era movie clicks with me so much, and feels so poignant, engaging and thematically creative. Highly rewatcheable. J.K. Simmons gives an amazing performance as an immutably memorable character, in an endlessly quotable film. Playing a music teacher who pushes young jazz musicians at an elite school, to their absolute limits, on a quest to push them beyond their limits. Mile Teller makes a fantastic debut, holding his own, as a drummer that catches his eye... or his ire. It tells a story that can be seen as both troubling and admirable, while making a great case for the importance of criticism as a facet of art and human excellence. Always demanding more, never satisfied... is there merit to this mentality? Have a watch and see what you think.

UHD Presentation is a Pleasant Surprise

I was very pleasantly surprised by the UHD presentation here. Obviously the source is 1080 so no resolution upgrade, but the HDR was a delight. This has always been a very visually pleasing film to me, and the HDR presentation is so clean and has so many gorgeous warm hues. Faces soak up light so naturally and drumkits shine in a way that just makes me happy. Some of the overhead shots in the final setup make the cymbals look incredible. All in all I was very, very pleased with what Sony did to the HDR in what could have very easily been a throwaway UHD upgrade.

Didn't really like Miles in the Divergent series, but he puts in a good performance here. J. K. Simmon's performance makes you want to punch him.

My Choice for Best Picture this year!

Whiplash is a pulsing, driving, rushing not dragging film about mans drive for greatness and the depths to which you must go to achieve it. This film made me sit in the theater with my pulse racing for 10 minutes after the film ended. The story is about a young musician under the baton of a brutal music director. This isn't a story about Jazz music even though it's the driving force that hooks you in and drags you thrashing to its conclusion. No this movie is about greatness! It asks every single person in the audience what are you will to risk to be great? Is it worth the risk? Can you go too far? Doesn't matter whether you're a musician, teacher, athlete, doctor, plumber or electrician. To be "great" in life takes hard work and only if you are willing to sacrifice will you reach your goal. It's an exhilarating, exhausting ride in all the best ways!

Whiplash is a beautifully complex movie that might admittedly scare some away considering both what appears to be a fairly trite, routine story of a student-teacher relationship and an examination of an unhealthy obsession and an unhealthy teaching tool. But the movie absolutely shines as a dark and wonderfully complex examination of the human condition, punctuated by two of the most outstanding performances of the year, including an Oscar-nominated effort from J.K. Simmons who deserves to walk away with the award. Sony's Blu-ray release of Whiplash is outstanding. High quality picture, amazing sound, and a nice compliment of extras make this one of the best of the young 2015 release schedule and practically a shoo-in for a spot on the end-of-year top ten list. Whiplash earns my highest recommendation.

    Movie Favorite Adding to Collection

I've seen the movie Whiplash a few times since it was released. I didn't see it at the theater, but waited to view it once it was on disc. JK Simmons puts on a phenomenal performance in this movie, and the movie also opened my eyes to Miles Teller. The story line is simple and easy to follow, but overall entertaining. I found myself struggling with the main character (Teller), and hating JK Simmons' character. I've found myself watching the movie over again, when it plays on one of the premium movie channels, and finally decided to purchase a copy when Best Buy had it for a great price for the steel book version...

Whiplash is simply put, an amazing movie. JK Simmons well deserved his oscar win for Best Supporting Actor. He will make you cringe, laugh and cry all within the 90 minutes. I am a drummer myself, so I already went into this movie expecting some great shots and some great music, it does not disappoint!! The blu-ray itself looks and SOUNDS amazing. I was pleasantly surprised with the special features. There is a commentary track with the director and JK Simmons. A 45 minute long featurette with famous drummer on their craft and what drumming means to them. But possibly the coolest special feature is the original short that the full length motion picture is based on.

This movie isn't just about jazz music, but also about what it takes to make it in the world. I recommend this film for all the "common core" advocates that give everyone a gold star for participation as opposed to hard work. In a “no child left behind” world that only sets up students to be unprepared for the competitive shark tank which is life; this movie demonstrates what it means to give something your all. However, sometimes your all isn’t good enough. Not everyone will become president/CEO etc. Some people are destined for greatness and others are not. This movie demonstrates that it is hard work and dedication (mixed in with talent) that creates success.

JK Simmons and Miles Teller both turn in career defining performances. I'm an avid music lover so any movie that features musicians as central characters is an intriguing premise. Some may think this movie is simply a teacher/student type relationship movie but it's a stellar movie that examines the human condition and illustrates how far someone can be pushed to achieve greatness and whether those methods are the right way to get there. A/V specs of the disc are top notch, supplemental package is decent with an interesting audio commentary. If you appreciate excellent acting and fine storytelling check it out.
