Another movie with action and suspense, but placed in the unusual location of Antarctica. Kate Beckinsale does an amazing job as a US Marshall attempting to uncover a possible murder in the frozen tundra of the south pole. I bought this Blu-Ray and gave the DVD to a friend who is a Beckinsale fan.

I think that "Whiteout" was one of the greatest films of all-time and it was also one of my favorite films of all-time. This film had a lot of action, horror, mystery and suspense that kept this film very entertaining and enjoyable. I also think that "Whiteout" had a really great and amazing cast, plot and storyline as well.

First off, it is sad to see how many people who review this on other sites bash Kate Beckinsale for her stripping down in this film. It isn't much more then what you see on every movie these days...stripping to the undergarments then it's done...nothing offensive or too revealing. Besides that, the movie itself had a lot of promise for it being a mystery of the first murder in Antarctica, but it's the same as every other murder mystery. Bad guy has objective, bad guy kills whom ever gets in his way to achieving objective, good guy figures out objective, conditions of surrounding environment make things difficult to resolve conflict. We'll end right there so not to give anything away, but the movie itself...if you can watch it with out expecting much of anything, was entertaining enough to sit through and it moves pretty quickly so that's a plus too.

Explain the Plot? Just Because...

2 of 5 stars for the suspense movie Whiteout. This is a very odd movie. After watching the movie and the behind-the-scenes materials I was left with two words: "Just Because". When I was a kid and was asked why something happened, I'd answer "Just Because". The movie opens with a flight over Antarctica by a Russian crew in 1957. They appear to have a special cargo and the flight crashes. At the end, when you learn of the cargo, just say "Just Because". In modern times, we have the arrival of a US Marshal assigned to the US base in Antarctica. Why? "Just Because". The movie morphs into a suspense movie with people who get killed by a masked person with an ice axe. Why? J.B. We learn a bit abot the lady Marshal but none of it appears to help the plot. Why waste our time? J.B. We eventually tie together the Russian cargo with the murders and are left with the feeling "Who Cares". The whole movie is set against the coming winter in Antarctica which often has "Whiteout" conditions. Why set in Antarctica? Just Because. In the behind the scenes, we learn this movie was adapted from a "Graphic Novel" (comic book) which explains why the plot seems weak. Listening to those who made the movie, they wanted to combine their idea of the lady marshal and the conditions in Antarctica. Now you see why I think the whole movie is lashed-together with "Just Because".
The bright spot in this movie was Kate Beckinsale and also the location filming in northern Canada. Tough conditions to make a movie. Too bad it didn't have a better payload for the viewer. So, to be clear, a well made movie with good acting and production values. The weakness was te story that hung-together with magic "Just Because" glue. As a suspense thriller, it was fair. Frankly, I would not recommend this movie.

I'd watch Kate Beckinsale in anything but even she can't make this movie anything better than average.
t takes slightly longer than three minutes for diminished mental capacity to set in during this Antarctic murder mystery with a fatally low body temperature. Kate Beckinsale is unrepentantly lazy, dialogue is awful and its misdirection is obvious. While the setting can be mesmerizing, little else about this movie is captivating. It's a standard-issue thriller, with a twist you see coming a continent away. Who the flake greenlit this blobby blur?
