Pearl Nolan is a restaurateur in the seaside resort town of Whitstable. She is also a private detective. Locals turn to her with all kinds of cases, including boat sabotage, mysterious donations of money, and murder. Many of these cases bring her into contact with DCI Mike McGuire. Mike is an experienced, London detective self-assigned while recovering from his wife’s death. Pearl’s caring and no-nonsense nature brings the two into initial conflict and gradually growing cooperation. The mystery series is based on a series of books by author Julie Wassmer and well adapted to hour long TV shows. Supporting cast and guest stars are very good, including Frances Barber as Pearl’s mother and in one episode a poisoner Midsomer Murders fans will recognize as the current pathologist. All episodes filmed on location in the actual Whitstable, England. The sum total is an enjoyable TV series.
