An Old 3D Movie that Looks Modern

The Year is 1911. Irish Gallager (Van Heflin) and his partner have struck gold in Mexico. Gallager is uninterested in Mexican politics and the current revolt until the local government leader Col. Ruiz seizes the mine. Gallager’s partner is killed while the two are fleeing and Gallager would certainly have endured the same fate if he were not rescued by the rebels. Among the revolutionists is the female warrior Raquel Noriega (Julie Adams) who is wounded in the battle and whom Gallager helps nurse back to health. Raquel’s fiancé who is the leader of the little rebel troop was once a brave commander but now seems to have grown tired of fighting. When the national rebel leader Orozco asks him to neutralize the local government military by buying guns in the USA and engaging the local government troops while Orozco attempts to seize Juarez City, he refuses although his men and Raquel are for the idea. This leads to Gallager taking charge. I liked this product because: (1) It was an enjoyable Western with a good story and considerable action in 81 minutes. (2) I love 3D. When I first saw a 3D movie on a television I thought 3D the biggest advance in TV since color. (I never claimed to be infallible.) (3) The movie was in color. Some 3D movies made in b&w look great, but for modern-looking special effects, I think color is superior. (4) Unlike many early 3D movies, this is not 35mm but rather fills up the screen of a modern TV screen. (5) The Blu-ray includes a 3D Woody Woodpecker cartoon. I am old enough to remember when a few cartoons were shown before the main attraction. (Wow! That makes me really old.). One can imagine the audience’s surprise at being presented with 3D

Average 50s oater from universal studios but with the addition of 3D. the effects are very subtle not on same par as say "house of wax" or "charge at feather river" storyline concerns goldminer van heflin losing his gold mine to corrupt Mexican officials and being drawn into a revolution lead by a lovely julia adams. Great addition to kino's other 3D opuses like "jivaro" and "taza, son of cochise" (also includes universal's woody woodpecker in "hypnotic hick" also in 3D)

Story is good as well as the transfer and color. The 3D is the best one that we have bought over the years. One scene has a pistol being lowered to someone from above and it ends up in front of our face. Fantastic!

A fun Saturday matinee style Western finally available in it's original 3D format! Another exceptional job by the 3D Film Archive. But the Woody Woodpecker 3D cartoon alone is worth the price!

Another excellent restoration by the 3D Film Archive. The audio and video were very good. It includes the 3D Woody Woodpecker cartoon "Hypnotic Hick" which was also beautifully restored.
