Withings Body C scale & limitations of Geek Squad

We had a withings scale for 10 years and were very happy with it. We recently purchased a new one at Best Buy. Everytime we tried to set it up to sync the set up failed. Best Buy took that scale back and exchanged it for a new one. We are still having some problems. Also, it is very frustrating that when you go to the Geek Squad they cannot totally test out what is wrong with electronic devices as they are not allowed to access their own Wi-Fi. Something needs to be done so that the Geek squad can be more effective in diagnosing and fixing customers problems.

We’ve been eyeing the smart scales for years and never actually acquired one “don’t need a smart scale to tell me I’m fat 😊. But after seeing all the things this new Withings Body Comp scale has to offer, I wanted to give it a try. Unboxing and Setting Up: The scale came in a nicely logoed box and inside there’s the scale, 4 feet for carpeted floors and instructions. Batteries were already installed “Duracell too” and just had to pull a plastic tab on the back to turn it on. I had already downloaded the Withings App on our Samsung phones, set up new accounts and linked the scale to each account. I do like that it can separate users and you will only see your data and vice versa. You can also set it up so everyone can see/share each other’s data. The scale can also be connected to Bluetooth or WiFi and once it was connected to our wireless network it immediately downloaded a firmware update. The scale itself is very robust with the top being pretty thick glass, the underside is plastic and looks to be pretty thick. The scale weighs quite a bit more than our other simple digital scale and is also larger, almost 13” square. The 2.8” display is very easy to read at standing height and shows you all the data as it acquires it. Use: According to the information the scale can track 8 users, which is plenty for us “only 2” but that’s great for a larger family too. After setting up everything I stepped on the scale and it immediately recognized me, “I’m guessing by the starting weight I input during account setup”, the same was for my wife, as soon as she stepped on it recognized her. Now you can’t just step on/off quickly like other scales you have to stand and wait for it to take all the readings and at the end it shows the current weather and air quality “nice”. We’ve only been using for a few days now and it hasn’t completed a couple of the tests as it takes 5 weighing for them to be calculated but it does record everything else. I do like that it checked vascular age and Electrodermal Activity as I have some neuropathy issues caused by an old viral infection that caused some nerve damage, and this should help keep an eye on that. It also has body composition, heart rate, and temperature measurements which is going to help keep track of our health goals. Conclusion: If you are looking for a very advanced weight scale that has more sensors in it than any other scale I’ve seen and want to track your health very closely this new Withings Body Comp scale is well worth looking into. Their app does offer a subscription to add more health goal and coaching features, at $99 a year that’s not too bad for everything it does, not sure it’s necessary but if you are wanting even more I’d probably add the subscription. Plus the app will sync with Samsung Health so all the data is shared there too. Overall this is a great piece of health management equipment and well worth the price.

I have appreciated the information this gives me, and it has assisted (with the addition of the Lose It! app that imports the Withings information) in my losing 10 lbs in a little over a month. For this price, however, I wish I got more than 1 month connectivity. I took my value rating lower as a result.

The scale itself is 5-star. I've been a user of Withings products for many years and will continue being a supporter of their products. The 3-star is due to the slightly misleading product purchase page of Best Buy - and to make prospective buyers aware that it seems the white version of the scale is being sent out is the Monochrome Screen only; if you want the full color screen you'll need to purchase the black scale to have that.

Following triple-bypass heart surgery, my cardiac rehabilitation program required two things, an accurate scale for weight management, and an accurate blood pressure monitor. Withings offers both, but this review is for the Withings Body Comp scale. This scale goes way beyond just measuring your weight. While the scale will do that accurately by itself, you will want to connect the scale to your smartphone and install the Withings Health Mate app to unlock all its amazing features. The app not only provides the added benefit of logging your data each time you step on the scale, it tracks your daily progress…valuable information that you can potentially share with your medical care team. The setup of the scale is simple and straightforward, with an option in my case to integrate with the Apple Health app on my iPhone. It will also work with android phones using the Google Fit app. I also have a diet tracking app that can receive my weight readings from the Withings Body Comp scale, presumably since it also shares data with my Apple Health app. This saves me the time of entering my weight into various and different apps on my phone. What makes the Withings Body Comp scale truly amazing is the additional features that measure your heart rate, calculate body mass and composition, and vascular age, and measure electrodermal activity to evaluate the health of your sweat glands. So, as you can see, this is not your father’s bathroom scale! Note that some of these features will require that you stand barefoot on the scale. If you stand on the scale long enough, it will even tell you the day’s weather predictions of high and low temperature as well as air quality analysis (requires connect the scale to your Wi-Fi network). Of course, all this data is logged using the smartphone app, but the scale also features an easy-to-read display that cycles through the various readings. The design of the scale is simple and attractive, with soft rubber feet for hard floors and it can work on carpet with the included foot adapters. The scale’s top is all glass for a clean and elegant look in any bathroom décor. The Withings smartphone app offers a comprehensive set of features and options that you can configure to meet your personal requirements. Complete health reports can be generated and shared with medical professionals or for your own personal recordkeeping and analysis. Detailed reports can also analyze some of the data and indicate health trends and highlight your progress in weight loss management for example. How much data you integrate into the app from your smartphone is highly configurable, making the app a personal reflection of your specific health needs or requirements. Of course, the most important function of a scale is to accurately measure weight, and that’s primarily why I chose a scale from Withings. Their scales are reportedly accurate to within one tenth of a pound, providing confidence in tracking my weight moving forward with my cardiac rehab program. For once, I look forward to getting on the bathroom scale!

    Super Smart, Tons of Insights!

Having used body composition scales for years, plus being someone who tracks these metrics seriously, I can say this is a great scale that provides tons of insights, it has a well-thought out companion app, and it also integrates well with Apple Health to provide a more well-rounded picture of your health. The scale itself is quite attractive with a glass top and metal accents. The display is very easy to read where it’s bright and has a lot of contrast. When taking a measurement, it will display your weight (of course ;) but it also shows your weight trends over the last 7 weigh-ins. Then it proceeds to measure and display your BMI, Fat Mass, Muscle Mass, Body Water percentage, Bone Mass, and Visceral Fat. Beyond that, and these are metrics that I haven’t really seen before on a body comp scale, it can display your heart rate, vascular age, EDA (electrodermal Activity), and then it can also display information that’s synced over wifi like the weather, air quality, and also your step count which can be synced over from your health platform of choice (like Apple Health). In terms of the body composition metrics, these seem to be very similar to another similarly priced body comp scale from another manufacturer I have. What’s interesting though is they have an “Athlete Mode” but that doesn’t seem to affect the composition percentages. I’ve found that most scales that measure body composition via impedance tend to have a harder time with the lower body fat percentages of athletes. I tend to hover around 10% (known through DEXA scans I get every couple years) but this is about the same as other scales I've used where it reports around 14-15%. Although I wish it was more inline with actual, this is something I’ve gotten used to with consumer body composition scales and realistically, the trends are more important than an exact percentage. The additional vascular age metric was particular interesting to me being that I suffer from high blood pressure so this helps provide another data point beyond just my blood pressure reading which I monitor with a blood pressure cuff. The app displays all of this information in a well-thought-out and nicely designed interface. Everything is easy to use and understand and what I like quite a bit is all the supporting information on what each of these metrics actually mean. Using this scale does require using it with the app and setting up an account but I couldn’t imagine benefiting from the wealth of information it can collect without the app. Another feature I liked about the app is that it can connect to Apple Health and the neat thing about this integration is that it can pull information from Apple Health into the app such as steps, heart rate, and even fitness metrics, along with updating Apple Health with the information that the scale collects. Overall, this is a fantastic scale if you’re looking for nearly every data point imaginable along with a very seamless and friendly app experience.

I regret upgrading to this scale from an older Withings model. The extra features aren't very useful, and just make it slower to use this scale. - Weight: Accurate and fast measurement, but this is the same as simpler models. - Body Fat %: Not accurate. It's over 70% off from a Dexa scan result. The scale also often fails to measure body fat %. - Visceral Fat: Not accurate. It shows "Normal", for someone that is obese. - Heart Rate: Not accurate. It shows 110bps when a sports band shows 65bps. - Vascular Age: Who knows if this is accurate given the heart rate inaccuracy? - Electrodermal Activity Score: Who knows what this means?

I don't have a direct comparison to other current models, but I have been using a body composition scale from a different manufacturer for a number of years, and this one blows that one out of the water. I have suspicions that my old scale wasn't so much measuring body composition as calculating what it probably is because all the numbers seemed to move in sync all the time. I don't believe that muscle mass will fluctuate up and down like total fat will. The numbers delivered by the Withings scale bounce around more relative to each other, which in my opinion makes them more believable. I also continued using my old scale as I started using this one to see how the numbers compared. Absolute weight is usually within a couple tenths of a pound of each other, though the Withings scale consistently comes up with a couple of percentage points higher on body fat percent. The numbers aren't necessarily a direct correlation though, because this scale will break down visceral fat from total body fat. It also spits out a couple of unique numbers - at least compared to my old scale: vascular age and electrodermal activity. I don't have much to compare those to, but the app claims my values are normal for my age, so I guess they're fine? The color display screen is a HUGE upgrade from the old lcd display, and it seems to do much better at connecting reliably to my WiFi network. The app is also better than the old one I was using. The nice bonus is that it drew in all of the information I've been collecting for years in the Apple Health app. I might even prefer the way it displays the information enough to use it instead of the Health app. It even pulls in the non-scale information my watch collects like sleep, exercise, blood oxygen, and heart rate data. if you're as obsessed with measuring and tracking your personal health information as I am, then this is definitely the scale for you.
