I wanted to love this movie. I bought it without seeing it, because I was certain, being a huge fan of both Wonder Woman and Gal Gadot that it just HAD to be a great under-appreciated movie. I was wrong. The acting was fine. Gal did a great job. The problem is, there's no villain. There's no bad guy. They spend three quarters of the movie chasing a guy who is just misunderstood only to convince him that he made a bad choice and give it up to save the world. That's it. Sometimes you NEED a villain who is just a villain. You need bad people for the heroes to beat up or they're not heroes. This isn't the real world, this is a movie, and doing it this way makes for a terrible movie.

A lot of people seem to not like this movie as much as the first, or not like it at all. I think it's a lot of fun. Not as good as the first but, still very enjoyable. The steelbook art is also really nice.

Wonder Woman 1984: Patty Jenkins sets a new standard for superhero films
Patty Jenkins has created a timely masterpiece that was timeless in its message, a message that was more important to the future of democracies now than ever. It would have been easy for the writers and Patty Jenkins to follow the traditional sequel path where bigger was always better. But films like The Dark Knight Rises and Spiderman 3, in pursuit of the bigger-and-better ending, fell short of the hero/villain showdown (Batman was saved from Bane by Catwoman, and Spiderman was saved by Harry); the films had lost what made the first battle between Batman and Bane, and Spiderman and The Green Goblin, so compelling. Bigger was not always better, and bigger had become a worn-out mess in many sequels.
The film under the direction of Patty Jenkins (also a writer for the project) skillfully navigated a bigger enemy than some mad and power-hungry business person, or a super-cosmic villain that was out to rule the earth, or a bitter and resentful individual who sought revenge on nameless people as a way to free their own cathartic experience; in any case, each of those villain prototypes have had plenty of time on the silver screen. Pedro Pascal played the mad business man, and Kristen Wiig played the nobody who was tired of being pushed around and sought revenge on nameless individuals who "deserved it" in her eyes. The ability of both actors to tone down their finely-tuned craft was a tribute to their own talents and to the talent of Patty Jenkins' directing. It was the combination of those two factors that created the opening for the subtle, yet deeply powerful and moving message, the space that allowed Wonder Woman to face the ultimate villain.
The first relationship dynamic that revealed the main theme of the movie was when Diana (Gal Gadot) told Steve Trevor (Chris Pine (who carried his weight in humor)) the story of Asteria; she was a leader with almost-invincible armor, which she used to fight off advancing armies, allowing the entire race of Amazons to escape. The name "Asteria" was of Greek origin and meant "star," it came from the Greek word Astraea or Astraia, but Asteria was an Anglicized spelling, the name meant goddess of justice and innocence (Nameberry.com). The armor of Asteria physically embodied all those non-physical properties (angelhood (star-like), innocence, justice). The point of Diana's story was that Asteria sacrificed herself for the survival of her people.
The second scene where the theme made itself known was when Diana sacrificed her own love for Steve Trevor to fight the two villains, who grew stronger as they nurtured the apocalypse. Without Diana wishing for Steve Trevor to return (earlier in the film), she never would have been able to experience the pain of loving and losing, a critical character arc for a goddess who must ask all of humanity to sacrifice. A task she had to do, a task she had to convince others to do. It was after that scene where Diana regained her full powers—learning new previously unknown powers, learning to fly.
It was rare to see an action/superhero film with such steady camera work. At times, it was easy to forget that it was an action/superhero film. The cinematography felt like the camera work in a Cameron Crowe or Sofia Coppola film (with long Orson-Welles-style takes), it was mesmerizing, like the experience of watching Apocalypse Now (directed by Francis Ford Coppola) for the first time, like watching Tim Burton's Batman for the first time. There were several scenes that caused chills, the combination of the cinematography and sets, was like dining with the gods and goddesses for a night. That was what the flying scenes elicited during Diana's resurgence: strength, sacrifice, picking yourself back up, being ready to sacrifice for future challenges. It was awe-inspiring camera work and directing.
It was in the final battle scene where the many mini-lions of plot development combined to make one-giant-nearly-unmissable lion of meaning. Diana was victorious over Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) and battled Max Lord (Pedro Pascal), but it was not a battle to the death—it was not a "bigger-and-better" ending. The painstaking work of Patty Jenkins, the individual actors (Gal Gadot captured blockbuster action with humor and throat-hurting sadness), cinematographer, editors, set-designers, music score, and writers came to a confluence in the final scene. The villain of the film was the selfishness of humanity, particularly the selfishness of humans in democracies. Wonder Woman 1984 revealed that even goddesses had experiences of love and loss, that even goddesses cannot save humanity from itself. Sacrifice was the ultimate hero; selfishness was the ultimate villain. WW1984 was a film about the virtue of sacrifice. A message that many humans would benefit from taking to heart, a message that hopefully comes in many more Wonder Woman films helmed by the steady hand of Patty Jenkins—and hopefully Wonder Woman will return soon.
The steelbook looks great too.
