"X-Men: Days of Future Past" (2014) starts in an apocalyptic near-future where mutants are being wiped out by Sentinels, government-made robots created for that very purpose. The X-Men and Magneto decide to send Wolverine's consciousness back to his body in 1973 to prevent the Sentinels from attaining their mutant-killing powers.
This is easily one of the best X-Men films because of the interesting plot and the focus on the most interesting characters. Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) has been the top X-Men since day one so you can't go wrong with making him the focal point. James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart are excellent as Professor X, as are Michael Fassbender as young Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique and Evan Peters as Quicksilver, the latter in a small but highly entertaining role. Nicholas Hoult as Beast gets an honorable mention and Bingbing Fan is notable as Blink, particularly her stunning face.
The plot is convoluted and yet easy to follow if you're familiar with the franchise's story arc. The film is compelling, but doesn't forget to be entertaining; for instance, the creative and amusing way Quicksilver takes down a bunch of security guards at the Pentegon, one of the movie's top scenes.

undoes the damage inflicted by Brett Ratner

To fully appreciate what Bryan Singer has accomplished with X-Men Days of Future past you had to see it in the theater on the big screen. Barring that, we now have this is excellent blu-ray disc set. Yes, we have all of the requisite and expected eye-popping special effects, but this film is also story and character driven from beginning to end.
When the franchise was temporarily handed off to Brett Ratner, Ratner was very cavalier about killing-off beloved characters, as casual collateral damage resulting from his uneven grasp of the X-Men universe. It was almost as if Ratner had been told to burn the franchise down to the ground.
Singer builds and expands on Matthew Vaughn's inventive X-Men First Class, continuing to intertwine real world history with a compelling cross-generational X-Men orgins story.
Without resorting to spoilers, Days of Future Past delivers new insights into Professor X, Wolverine, Magneto and Mystique in action-packed, yet meaningful ways. New characters from the X-Men comics are introduced with appropriate flair. And all of the Ratner damage is finally undone.
Well worth more than a couple of viewings to really take all of this in.
Highly recommended.

X-Men 'First Class' was not the massive hit that 'The Avengers' was, but in many ways, it was a better film. Both were excellent, and after his run scripting 'Astonishing X-Men' for John Cassaday, I'd love to see Joss Whedon bring that tale to the big screen. But 'First Class' had some of the smartest superhero storytelling ever seen on film, and James MacAvoy and Michael Fassbender were brilliant, adding entirely new dimensions to Prof X and Magneto.
Merging the two casts was a very good idea. Everything about this altered version of Claremont and Byrne's classic X-men tale is done right, especially the Sentinels. As a kid, I always hated the Sentinels, they were a joke. Wolverine would cut them to scrap metal, Magneto would just wave his hand. But these Sentinels are frightening, adaptive machines that mimic whatever gets thrown at them.
The cast, the story, and the direction are excellent... and despite my annoyance with time-travel storylines, the method they opt for is better than usual. This is not only the smartest and most entertaining entry in the X-men franchise, it is also one of the best superhero films to date.

Sentinels, robots that were created for the purpose of hunting down mutants were released in 1973. 50 years later the Sentinels would also hunt humans who aid mutants. Charles Xavier and his X-Men try their best to deal with the Sentinels but they are able to adapt and deal with all mutant abilities. Charles decides to go back in time and change things. He asks Kitty Pryde who can send a person's consciousness into the person's past to send him but she can only send someone back a few weeks because if she sends someone back further it could harm them. So Logan decides to go back himself because he might be able to withstand it. So Charles tells him that it's Mystique who's responsible because when she learned about the Sentinels she sought out Bolivar Trask the man who created them and killed him. She would be caught and studied and her ability to change was somehow added to the Sentinels which is why they can adapt. Logan must go to the younger Charles and ask him to help; problem is that he was despondent at that time and without his powers because he took a drug which allows him to walk but takes away his powers. Logan is also told to find Magneto.
