This thing is a beast and can handle anything I throw at it (and I throw quite a lot) and I never see any framerate drops or stuttering. 8gb of video ram is a lot at first glance but I often see it using well over 2gb even when my previous card which only had 2gb didn't seem to need more.

Got it for around $200 on clearance. Ended up buying it hoping to crossfire with my Sapphire 390x. Surprisingly it worked perfectly with it. Works great for 4k gaming. Def recommended!

I had to return this because it made a grinding noise when under a load. Perhaps it was just a bad card off the bat, but the store didn't carry it so exchange would've been a hassle so I decided to just go get the ASUS Strix version, and that one worked great.

Great card if your case and PSU are ready!

This card crushes just about any game I throw at it with max settings, 1440p, 60+ fps. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. That being said, I would only recommend buying this card if you have an adequate power supply and case (cooling-wise).
In terms of power supply, I have an EVGA G2 850W PSU (gold-rated) and I honestly wouldn't feel comfortable running this beast on anything less than that. One of the other reviews states that this card blew out the capacitor on two of his power supplies (600W and lousy 850W power supplies) and I believe him. So make sure you have at the very least a good 750W PSU, or a good 850W PSU if you want to overclock.
In terms of heat, I have an NZXT H440 case which has decent but not great airflow and this card gets hot quick. Completely stock I would hit 82 degrees Celsius, and once I increased the power limit I would hit 85. While those temperatures are still completely safe for this card, they might not be in a case with less airflow. They also don't leave a lot of headroom for overclocking. A lot of you might not be comfortable running a GPU that hot, even if I assure you that it is safe over and over again. If you're one of those people then this GPU is not for you.
If you can deal with the power usage and heat, this card is an absolute beast. The aesthetics are beautiful, the cooler is excellent and stays relatively quiet even at 100% fan speed, and the card itself overclocks quite well if you can deal with the heat. Another great feature is that XFX redesigned the heatsink for the VRMs for the 390/390x which was one of the biggest weakpoints of the cooler they used for the 290/290x, and the VRMs now stay significantly cooler (<100 C with a core temp of 85). The 8gb of VRAM is super helpful too, and I've exceed 4gb in three games where I would otherwise need to turn down the texture settings on a GTX 980 or anything else with 4gb of VRAM.
So overclocking wise, the highest I could get on stock voltage was 1120/1650, but the temperature at those clocks was too high for everyday use (max 90 C). For a 24/7 overclock I used MSI Afterburner to go from 1550/1500 to 1590/1600 with a voltage DECREASE of 31mv, which puts me at a max temp of 85 C. At the new clocks (with a +50% power limit as well) I have about a 10% gain in performance from stock with only a minor increase in temperature, which is pretty sweet. The fact that you can overclock at all while undervolting this card is definitely a sign of high-quality.
At this point I must make a Freesync plug. Freesync is amazing and has changed the way that I game. If you don't know what it is then look it up. If you buy this card consider getting a 1440p 144Hz Freesync monitor as well (I use the BenQ XL2730Z) because it will change your life for the better.
TLDR; If you have a good 750-850W power supply and a case with decent airflow, then definitely buy this card. It's very well designed and well built and you can't do better for the price.

AN EXCELLENT BUY!! 8GB GDDR5, CAN MATCH GTX 980

I tested out both the GTX 980 and GTX 970 to find out for myself if it's really what's it hyped up to be by the majority of tech reviewers and it delivered. Fast performance and excellent power efficiency. I returned the GTX 980 and stuck with the GTX 970 because not only was it $150-$200 dollar cheaper but it also performed within 7-8 fps of the GTX 980 when overclocked. Price per performance of this card is best in class.
After a couple of weeks the AMD R9 390X by XFX arrived in stores and four things caught my eye....price, performance on par with the GTX 980, the 8GB of memory, and lifetime warranty for this card at BestBuy. And yes! I know that it' s basically a rebrand well... more like refinement and also about the high power demand that the graphic chip requires but it' s not enough to be a deal breaker for me. Heck, unless you're benchmarking 24/7 and over overclocking your card the power wattage is a moot point. Now I was skeptical of XFX brand at first since this is my very first AMD graphic card and had always bought ASUS, MSI or EVGA branding cards for Nvidia's side but after digging through the internet I found that is a very reliable graphic card brand.
Testing out and using this card myself, I can tell you that it lives to the praises. This card is very well built and it has a lifetime warranty compared that to the standard 3 years from other manufacturers. The card ran very silent and the fans do a great job of keeping the temperatures below 70C. Heck the reference GTX 900 cards run as high as 84C. So much for high power equals high temperatures and vice versa. It's all in the quality of the coolers and XFX ranks among the elites.
Now don't listen to those who tells you that 8GB of GDDR5 Ram is overkill for 1080p gaming. Games like Shadow of Mordor, GTA V, and Star Citizen all make use of that extra ram because of that those games are looking out of this world. Remember 5-6 years ago they said the same thing about having 1GB and now both the PS4 and Xbox have 8GB as standard. Now think about this, the lead platform right now is the PS4 so it only makes sense to have the same amount of VRAM or more since the vast majority of PC games coming out are console ports. One thing that always get more demanding are games. So it's good to be prepared.
I greatly enjoy this card and will return my GTX 970 but at the end of the day, don't base your buying decision on fanboyism but instead go to whatever that's in your budget and decide from there. I did and I'm very happy with my purchase. Happy gaming.

Get drivers from website

Spent several hours trying to get drivers on disk to install. Kept hanging up. Stuck in same spot over half hour. Downloaded new installed fine. Then tried disk and only evolve was update. I mainly play warcraft and have three monitors. So far cannot say much improved over HD7970 it replaced. Using Evolved app optimized settings only getting 29 fps standing in center of garrison. Afraid to see in combat with 10-40 players around. Also getting some lag when turning character. Will test a couple more days but not promising on a 10 yr old game.

Excellent video card for gamers

I've had this video card for about a year and I absolutely love it. Runs games at 1080p no problem at all. It can technically run games at 4K but its recommended to use two and run them in crossfire to get 60fps instead of the 24-30fps with just one. Another thing to note is that this is a power hungry beast which won't be a surprise to AMD fans but you may need to upgrade your power supply to fully utilize the card.

Not great...issues with Steam in home streaming

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I decided to go with this card over a GTX 970 as I got a steal on a freesync monitor. I use Steam in home streaming very frequently to play games on my laptop. This was my first AMD card in over 10 years and I immediately returned because there are MAJOR issues with Steam in home streaming (google it; known issues where screen flickers constantly). I just returned this and went with a GTX 970 and I could not be happier. GTX 970 does a great job at 1440p and costs a lot less than this. my in home streaming is working perfectly again. I am going to avoid AMD cards again. I was hoping that things were better but I was wrong.

Worse performance than 100$ GTX card

I bought this card to replace a GTX 750 Ti card, for an increase in performance.. however when I received it and installed the drivers, the R9 390X actually had worse performance than my GTX 750 Ti. I tried all sorts of methods to uninstall and reinstall drivers, all sorts of different versions and none of it has worked. I am massively disappointed with this card and now with AMD in general. I pretty much wasted my entire weekend off trying to fix the thing. Not happy with it at all.

AMD's bloatware was an inconvenience at first, but then, after it failed to update its drivers properly, it completely stopped sending out a signal. I'm never buying an AMD card again.
