This is our third Yale Assure Lock product as we have their deadbolt smart locks on our front and back doors. We installed this lever style smart lock on an interior guest bedroom door since we rent out rooms in our home on occasion. This model is a retrofit for a standard door knob, and the finish is “black suede,” a matte black. While the lock uses 4 AA batteries to power the keypad, there is an external emergency battery terminal so if the batteries die, you can still power on the keypad to unlock the door with a standard 9V battery. One physical backup key is also included for the keyed cylinder. The only issue we had with installation was that we have an older home, so the holes for the knobs and latch were smaller than current standards. We had to re-drill the holes slightly larger to 2-⅜” and 1” diameter respectively. If you have newer doors and door knobs, this step probably won’t be necessary. A tear out ruler/template is provided to ensure your door meets the measurement requirements which will also help you position the holes. The only other tool required for installation is a screwdriver. Once you’ve removed the existing door knob, latch, and strike plate, it’s simply a matter of replacing them with the new Yale hardware. I liked that all the finishes for the pieces matched including the strike plate and faceplate for the latch. The latch length is adjustable and fits a 2-3/8” or 2-3/4” backset by pushing/pulling on the end. Longer security screws are also included for the strike plate if desired. After the exterior keypad and interior battery housing of the lock are installed on the door, you attach the levers by pushing them onto their respective interior/exterior posts. They’ll lock into place with spring pins, which is supposed to make them easier to remove later, but I found that even with the pins depressed, it was extremely difficult to remove the handles once installed. The WiFi module and DoorSense sensor allow you to connect the smart lock to your WiFi network, so you can use the app to control the smart lock and monitor the door’s status: open, closed, locked, and unlocked. Just remember to never install or remove the module while the batteries are inserted as this can damage the module. The DoorSense sensor can either be installed on the frame adjacent to the lock or flush mounted inside the jamb, though the latter requires additional drilling. One thing to note is that the interior lever can always be used to open the door, regardless whether or not the unit is locked or unlocked. Locked status only prevents entry from the outside, so a person cannot be locked inside the room. This lock connects with your phone over Bluetooth by default, and once set up, input your WiFi credentials for remote control access from wherever you have an internet connection. The module does not need a separate bridge controller, though adding one to your setup may extend the battery life of the unit. Using the Yale Access app to control the lock is simple, though it requires you to create an account and log in. Just tap the large circle in the middle of the screen to lock and unlock the door and whether the ring is solid or dashed lets you know if the door is closed or open. You’ll also have the option to enable voice commands by connecting your Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit accounts. For app-less entry, up to 250 unique 4-8 digit PIN codes can be created for multiple users (via the app or keypad). You can restrict passcodes to a recurring weekly schedule, for example access to a private bathroom in an office building only during work hours, or create temporary codes that have a limited start and end date/time. When creating recurring codes, only one time frame can be assigned across all selected days. The same PIN also may not be assigned to multiple users. While owners of the lock in the app will see all household locks listed under their profile, each guest-user entry will display only 1 device. So if a guest needs access to multiple Yale smart locks (e.g. front and guest room doors), each device will appear as a separate entry; they can however, use the same PIN for both devices. The lock can be set to privacy and vacation modes which respectively prevent all codes (including the master code) or only users codes from opening the door. However, note that the app and physical key will always be able to unlock the door regardless of the mode set. The exterior keypad has a glossy, smooth LCD that is responsive to touch but also resists fingerprints. The numbers are not visible when the LEDs are off but light up brightly once you touch the keypad to wake up the unit. A speaker on the side of the lock will announce menu options and play audible tones when keys are pressed, as well as when the door is locked/unlocked. You can enable or disable the following features via the app or on-board keypad: auto-relock, one-touch lock, volume/sound, WiFi, all-code lockout, and interior status light. With one-touch locking enabled, the latch, if unlocked, will lock when you touch anywhere on the keypad. More granular controls like auto-relock timing (from 30 seconds to 30 minutes) can only be set in the app. For security, you can set a keypad timeout from 10 seconds to 3 minutes when an invalid code is entered 3 to 10 times consecutively. You can also enable push notification when the door has been open/ajar for 1 to 30 minutes by creating a Smart Alert. The lock works exactly as we’d hoped and gives us an easy way to grant access to guests and visitors in advance or on-demand, even when we are away from the property. We can set up limited time windows or a recurring schedule and monitor in the app which users/codes are being used and when. As this lock is on a bedroom door, we’ve disabled the interior light which flashes red every ten seconds when the door is locked, as this would create unnecessary light pollution at night, and also turned off the sound, so we don’t hear button presses when guests come in late. I expect battery life for this door to be similar or longer than the Yale Assure deadbolt locks we use at the building’s entrances, as this door is less frequently utilized, putting my estimate at around 5-6 months per set of batteries. When the batteries are running low, a red battery icon appears in the lower left of the keypad’s screen, and the app will send you a notification at 20% or less battery life to remind you to change them. AirBnB integration is also a forthcoming feature, so we look forward to being able to provide guests with entry codes for the duration of their stay upon booking through that platform.

I recently installed the Yale Wi-Fi Smart Lock, and it has completely transformed the way I manage home security. The sleek design blends seamlessly with my door, and the installation process was straightforward, taking less than 15 minutes with clear instructions. The built-in Wi-Fi eliminates the need for an extra hub, making remote access incredibly convenient. I can lock and unlock my door from anywhere using the Yale Access app, which is intuitive and packed with features like auto-lock/unlock, guest access, and real-time activity monitoring. Overall, the Yale Wi-Fi Smart Lock is an excellent investment for anyone looking to enhance their home security with smart technology. It’s secure, easy to use, and incredibly convenient. Highly recommended!

It’s quick and easy to defeat this lock, I passed

The lock is very attractive, the finish is top notch, and ergonomics are good. The LCD keypad is completely black when not in use, but the number and symbols are very bright and easy to read once activated. I prefer the long handles to a knob for an entrance door. They are easier to use when your hands are full carrying things or if you have a disability. Owning a few homes over the past 40+ years, I’ve installed many locks for myself and others, most standard, buy also several smart locks made by the top brands as well as a few of the newer brands. There were no surprises with the Yale lock, all was typical of a smart lock. The Yale Assure Lock includes a link to an animated installation video using BILT along with excellent printed directions. The BILT video gives a nice overview of the steps and what you can expect. The printed directions break down the steps well and provide more detailed pictures and help, like which size screws to use at each step, which the BILT video lacks. If you are not very familiar with installing a smart lock, view the BILT video first to get an overview, then follow the excellent printed directions to install. Once the hardware is installed, there are directions included on how to install the Wi-Fi module, but nothing more. On the box for the Wi-Fi module is a single like to download the “Yale Access” app. Once you download the correct app and create an account, the app walks you through pairing it to the lock and setting up the lock to work with your Wi-Fi and the app. This seems to be one of the better Smart Lock app, very easy to navigate and use. Activation of the keypad screen requires placing three fingers on the screen at the same time. Programming the lock is easy, easier than most that I have installed. The installation was typical for a smart lock. I installed the lock on a typical 1.75” thick pre-hung steel garage door with a MDF core that had predrilled holes from the factory. I had installed a standard lock in it about 12 years ago with no issues since. The paper template for the hole installation matched up perfectly with the factory holes in my door. The screws for the Striker and Latch Bolt Faceplate have two steps, the bottom starts thin and the top section gets thicker. The threads are also much finer than my old lock’s screws. With a just a few threads at the top end of the Yale screw to meet the door and jamb material. The new screws held the part OK, but barely. I thought they may loosen soon. Filling the holes with a good wood putty or drilling out the screw holes and inserting dowels to support the new screws would provide a more secure anchor for the screw to bite into. For now, I used the screws from my old lock that fit perfectly and hold the new lock parts securely. My old screws finish is not a match for the black hardware, but this could be resolved later. I had a problem where the electronic keypad could not turn the lock the last 10% of the turn when trying to unlock it. When locking I had a similar issue 1 out of three times. I reinstalled the lock several times, ensuring all lined up perfectly. Lubricated all parts of the lock bolt that moved against other surfaces with graphite lube to no avail. I tried to leave the parts holding the inner and outer lock parts slightly loose, then tight, and lastly very tight; it did not matter. The lock motor just does not complete the job. The electric lock motor seems to be under-powered, or something I don’t see is binding a bit. I tested all the alkaline batteries that came with the lock using a battery tester I know is accurate and all were in excellent condition. Since the lock would not work reliably, I was unable to complete the Wi-Fi setup at the end of the install. With the lock fully installed, I locked myself in the garage to see how secure the lock is. On my first try, I was able to defeat the lock in under 2 minutes. With a bit of practice, I halved this time. I used the bent wire that came with the lock, but any heavy wire such a coat hanger wire or finish nail could be easily bent to work. Bypassing was as simple as using the bent wire to push the pin that holds the handle on and then pulling on the handle to remove it. The pin is on the side of the lock facing the door jamb but there is enough space to work. If the lock cylinder does not come out with the handle, simply pull it out with your fingers. Then insert a medium to large flat blade screwdriver into the slot behind where the lock cylinder was and turn to unlock the door, then push to open the door. Very easy. This major design flaw needs to be addressed. It should not be possible to push in the pin holding the door handle when the door is locked. A security set screw on the lock cylinder would also help add a layer to slow down a burglar. If you use this lock, then I would glue and screw a block of wood to fill the space between the door handle and jamb to block all access to the pin holding the handle on. Round the edges as this block as it will be in the way a bit when using the door. While the electronic lock could not completely turn the lock switch, I could use the lock with a key, as done with the old standard lock. Preferably on a day where the temps are not in the mid 90’s and high humidity. But with the glaring security issue where the handle and lock cylinder could be removed within a minute, I chose to remove it and put my older much more secure standard lock back in. The looks and features are nice, but in the end the primary purpose of a lock, "security", is the most important feature. Unfortunately, this lock is too far too easy to defeat with wire and a screwdriver, which are readily found in many garages.

This lock works perfect for what I was looking for, quick and not too bad of an install, at least when just replacing an old handle. So far it has worked flawlessly, the handle auto-unlocks when i return home from being away, which means no fumbling for keys when carrying grocery bags or whatnot, I also value the ability to be able to set it to auto-lock after a certain period of time, 30 minutes is the max, this feature works great when you have a teenager that doesn't lock the door when leaving the house. Also the remote locking and unlocking comes in very handy, and the event log, which shows exactl;y what time someone unlocks the door, also handy for seeing exactly when a teenager gets home.

The touchscreen keypad is easy to use, and I love that I can lock/unlock it with my phone or even a key if I want. The setup was simple, and it looks really sleek on my door (the satin nickel finish is clean and modern). I feel way safer now, and it’s super convenient if I forget my keys. Great for anyone who wants a smart upgrade for their door!
