Good for someone that has an older 2 channel system needing a replacement.

This is an elegant piece of equipment. A serious sound investment in a distinctly cool, uncluttered cabinet. It does what it's supposed to in a most unassuming way. A smooth operator in the best sense.

I've owned Luxman, NAD, Sony ES, Denon and Pioneer. All older stuff, all had their bright spots but were long in the tooth, each possessing at least one annoying defect. Once I discovered Yamaha had this lineup of receivers with these specs I had to get in on it. Dead quiet noise floor; airy stound stage; razor sharp tuner in a room that has a made it hard picking up our local jazz station. This tuner pulls it in like my Sony ES tuner but with much more life -- sparkling sound approaching my Sansui Tu-217 but with a much lower noise floor. Paired with my warmish SR-15 Silverlines in my home office I have no complaints with vinyl or CD playback. Haven't really tested fidelity on my iPod but can't imagine there will be an issue. Love the 40 possible FM tuner presets. Pure direct is great too. Bottom line is a receiver can't make a bad source good, or deficient speakers sufficient. What it can do is amplify the signal with as little color and distortion as possible, and for $280 with this feature set, you really can't go wrong.

It's a great receiver! Don't let the power rating fool you! It really caught the Yamaha charm. A lot of things on the front of this receiver are not standard features anymore. There are no video components run through it, so that stuff won't degrade the audio signal chain - great for using with a desktop PC and some bookshelf or floorstanding speakers. "Loudness" is as simple as this: It turns the mids down; that's it - and a little goes a long way. The idea behind this is that using subtractive EQ is much better for ear fatigue than boosting Bass and (especially) Treble. Loudness also allows the audio to maintain a higher level of purity than boosting, which creates high and low frequency nodes. It also gives you more usable volume "throw" by allowing you to set your gain where you prefer to run your gear at. Excellent components, fantastic build, I really liked the concept of this receiver - until the main selling point for me didn't really come through. I knocked two off of features because I am really bummed that it doesn't have volume control for the sub out. I wanted to be able to turn my sub off via remote from across the room, the controllable features from the remote are a little basic. I can have quick reference with the loudness control for flattening my mix and turning it up to see what it's going to sound like after someone does something similar in say, their car at low volumes. For some of my friends that went to the same audio production school I went to, I'd recommend this receiver to them regardless of price point, which says a lot!

I purchased the Yamaha along with their 5-disk CD player in hopes of replacing an older unit and being able to control everything from a single remote. Even though the unit is advertised as a 2-channel receiver, it's actually a 2.1 receiver with a subwoofer output. I'm not sure why Yamaha insisted on degrading this product by adding A/V features, but when playing the unit it became immediately obvious that the low bass was missing. I suppose they cut off the low bass and send it out the subwoofer jack, but good design technique would allow this feature to be turned off, but they chose not to use good design technique. The result is a receiver that, when run in 2 channel mode (as it is advertised as a two channel unit) it does not reproduce full range music. Otherwise the receiver is well built and includes a phono input, which is becoming hard to find these days. The controls are solid, but I did notice some static when turning the loudness control, which should really not happen on a brand new unit. In addtion, Yamaha decided to use a non-standard loudness control, which is difficult to use and doesn't work very well. The remote is another issue. I can't understand why Yamah chooses to put the CD controls at the very bottom of the remote, making it very difficult to use with one hand. I found myself using the CD player's remote instead, which defeats the purpose of buying the same brand of CD and receiver to use a single remote. Given the fact that this is really not a true 2-channel unit, I can't recommend the Yamaha and I'm returning mine.
