My previous Yamaha gave me 13 years of daily use and it was time for an upgrade when one the speaker channels began to short out. I use it at least 5-7 hours daily so it owed me nothing. I love this new model. It has the same features as my previous one but a few more are added. I love the pure direct for talk radio. There are tons of inputs that I will never use but my cd player sounds killer through this receiver and my Klipsch speakers. Great receiver at a great price.

Was looking for a new stereo receiver with 5 inputs and speaker control for left/right speakers. Had all needs met and other options not needed now but are there for future needs. Reception was a little weak but fixed with a longer FM antenna ( live on south side of Oak Creek, even TV is not that great ) Easy set up and had working in less than hour with all hook ups.

I needed a new stereo receiver after the audio outputs failed on my old one after more than twenty years of play. This Yamaha receiver was just what I needed to hook up a turntable, a cassette deck, and two CD players. I am very pleased with this purchase. Has a great sound.

Overall a great receiver for a home stereo system. Has plenty of options to allow it to work with both current and older components. Great sound quality.

Yamaha makes great products and I own many. I bought this receiver to replace a receiver that got too old (25 years). I was left a little wanting when I tested it out. The sound was a little brittle. And the lack of power was a problem for me. I wanted more definition from the treble/bass controls. I felt it lacking somewhat in that category. If you are not too picky about your sound quality this receiver is fine but if you demand pristine control and good power to drive big speakers this may not be right for you.

I like that I don't have to take out the manual every time I want to change a setting because it is consumer friendly. Works well with my other components.

After no success with a receiver meant for home theater, we purchased this Yamaha and love it! Easy to install in about an hour, allowing time to review instructions. Very good sound overall, good separation, good tone. Easy to operate after very short learning curve. Highly recommend it for listening not involving home theater.

Awesome amp

I've been an avid Onkyo guy since I started buying AV equipment way back in the day and they have served me well. After my last one finally bellied up I did exhaustive research to find a replacement and settled on the R-S500. Most audiophiles will tell you that amps are amps and its the speakers that make a difference in sound but I have to disagree. This amp has such warm tonal distinctions and great separation. My last Onkyo would start to just blend sounds at the higher volumes and this unit keeps every sound very clean and distinct. I love the loudness control feature. Tweek it back and forth against the main volume control and after you figure it out you'll understand its not just another add on gimmick. I also love its old school looks and feel. Just lifting it out of the box and you can tell its a quality item.
