A Soundbar with Attitude (and Alexa too)

A soundbar that can interact with your smart home devices and answer questions through Alexa? You bet.
A soundbar that can connect to your home wifi and be controlled via your smartphone? Yep.
A soundbar that can stream Spotify or connect through Bluetooth at the press of a button? Oh yeah.
Yamaha has made a really nice system that will fill a room with sound. The quality of the sound is great (tested with Galavant) and tweakable with several different EQ options as well as a 3D surround mode, clear voices mode, and bass extension mode.
My favorite part is that the volume is highly segmented so you can adjust to just the right volume (on lower quality soundbars you have either too loud or too quiet and nothing in between).
The integration with Alexa is a nice touch but be aware that you cannot (at the time I'm writing this) select your wakeword on this device.
The subwoofer is BIG, but that also means it pushes a lot more bass and my tests using Star Wars did not disappoint.
So why 4 stars and not 5?
1: the box/packaging is a total nightmare. I'm not joking, this is the worst part of the entire thing. You cannot open the package without getting a mountain of styrofoam particles and styrofoam bag pieces all over the place. Not to mention, the box itself is so awkward and does not separate, so you'd better have a big car or no passengers to haul it home.
2: the touch bar buttons are a little finicky and the app does not always accurately reflect all the settings. During setup, there's a 15-minute firmware update that must be applied in order to use the thing on your network... and so it's easy to miss the fact that the microphone could be muted (it was, but the app didn't show it was)... so after lengthy troubleshooting, I re-ran the entire setup process to try to sync everything back up. Turns out I just needed to push the touch bar button to unmute the mic. Sheesh.
- You cannot select your own wake-word for Alexa.
Overall, a good setup for a general entertainment room.

Overall the Yamaha YAS-209 is a solid sound bar. It won’t blow you away, but it does the job. It also comes with a wireless Subwoofer and Alexa. Setup is easy to do. The soundbar only has 1 HDMI input port, so if you have more than one device, use your TV’s HDMI ports. It has a 2.4GHz wireless LAN, BT, Ethernet, optical, HDMI in (ARC), HDMI out, and a USB port. It’s a tight fit to get everything in the space if you use all the connections. I used the Optical, Ethernet, and both HDMI ports. So large headed cables cables could be an issue. Everything connected fine and worked with no problems. It has HDR and 4K pass though with Dolby and DTS decoding. Without the app it’s just plug and play. There is no on-screen setup, just use the remote. The remote is light and small and only uses one CR2032 battery.
Overall the sound is nice and it has several sound fields, and a 3D sound setting. The 3D sound does a decent simulation of surround. The bass has a separate volume to adjust how you want. The bass never gets excessively loud, but you know it’s there and working. In order to take full advantage of the soundbar you have to use the Yamaha soundbar app. This will allow you to connect to Alexa, remotely control the soundbar, use Internet streaming, and update the firmware over the internet. Without the app, you cannot fully use the soundbar, it’s needed to get the sound bar’s full potential. The app easily found and connected to the soundbar. Once connected, it updated the firmware (otherwise you need to use a USB stick with the firmware downloaded). After that, I linked to Alexa. The microphone for Alexa is in the soundbar. You can activate Alexa with an IR remote and just speak into the room. It picked up command from across the room with no issues. Controlling volume, inputs, etc work with no problems through voice commands. The soundbar also has a mute on it to stop Alexa for listening for commands. You can also easily disconnect it from Alexa through the app. Activating Alexa provides no extra features for the soundbar, it’s all changeable through the app or remote except Alexa use. If you already have integrated Alexa in your home it will work like any other Alexa device. The app also lets you connect to internet streaming service, DLNA items on your network, and songs on your phone or controlling device.
It's a good soundbar, and make sure you use the app. With the app you get all the features you pay for, and more control. If you want Alexa, this is the model you want. The YAS-209 is now in the Logitech Harmony database.

I bought this unit based upon recommendations on buy.com and other retailers. The sound is ok for tv, but lacks clarity and response in higher frequencies; basically a lot of midrange and bass. There us no way to control bass, treble, or any frequencies via the remote or the app. You have to use preset sound “enhancements,” which don’t vary much from one another. The “ music” preset adds an annoying echo, that makes things worse. Due to a move, I didn’t get a chance to set it up and evaluate it soon enough before the return window expired, so I’m stuck with it.

This sound bar is the nicest looking design I have seen. It is not too long as some I’ve owned. The subwoofer is a larger size and looks good by any wall in the room. There are volume and control buttons on top of the sound bar and lights to provide feedback but no display. There are no rear speakers but the surround sound mode takes care of that.
Connections- I tried both HDMI input from my DVR and pass through to the HDMI port on my TV as well as the optical digital input. The HDMI input and output and the digital input both worked fine. The subwoofer automatically connected when it was first plugged in. The Bluetooth connection worked well to play music from my phone that I could not play through the app like YouTube music.
Remote- There is also a remote that provides even more control but I use my DVR remote that is programmable and controls the volume and mute just fine. I have pulled the remote out occasionally to change settings that are not on the app, though, like clear voice and sound modes from movie to TV to sports, etc.
Sound - the sound is really full and clear. We have no problem understanding the dialog whether the volume is kept low or high. The bass is excellent and there Is a bass extension button to turn on expanded bass which makes the bass even more full.
App - the Yamaha Sound Bar app for iPhone or Android allows you to control the settings for the sound bar right from your phone. It also allowed me to change volume, change source and play music on the sound bar. It also allowed me to set up WiFi so Alexa and streaming services can be used with the sound bar.
Alexa - I have been able to use Alexa to turn volume up and down, play Amazon Music, control other Alexa devices, get lots of info and control other sound bar settings. This is a great plus for a sound bar. I was able to retire my Echo in the living room. The two mice on the sound bar even pick up Alexa commands from the next room so they must be excellent quality.
Overall - this is an above average sound bar with great sound, great styling and good documentation included on paper.

Doesn't turn on, as advertised, with TV remote. Will turn on with its' remote. Once it is turned on, the TV remote can control its volume and it turns off with the TV remote. Yamaha is aware if the problem and may send me another sound bar, as they believe this one is defective, Or they say it is the TV. We have Samsung TVs. If it doesn't work with Samsung TVs, what TVs does it work with?

A rough start

In the box is a soundbar, a subwoofer, power plugs, a remote, and the best part of the whole box, an optical cord.
I had a rough start because i could either get the app to work or the remote to work. Another rough start was not knowing to update my settings on my television. Once the settings were changed, I heard the incredible sound.
The sound for sure is amazing. I found that the 3D surround was better with music. When I tested it with movies, the sound was crisp, a little too crisp for me.
Overall, I definitely enjoy the great sound and once I get the app, remote down, I will continue to have great sound.
Would I buy this product again, yes. If I had problems again with the remote or the app then I would just use the buttons on the speaker.

This Yamaha sound bar is a great addition to any entertainment setup that currently only uses the built-in television speakers for sound. Once one starts using a soundbar and subwoofer for everyday movie, TV, and music consumption, there really is no going back. This soundbar was very easy to set up, the directions were very clear with good diagrams about routing HDMI cables. Once you download the app to your phone, you can connect your soundbar to your home network and then set up the alexa functions and sign into other accounts. The sound quality is okay with this sound bar, I have noticed that it really depends on what you are watching or listening to. And depending on what you’re watching, you have to adjust settings accordingly. For example, the setting that sounds great for TV shows and commercials, sounds awful when you start streaming music from your phone. I had to switch sound settings to music and turn off 3d surround for music to sound good. And when switching back to a TV or movie, it sounds great once the setting is adjusted back to movie or tv, and clear voice is turned on, and 3d surround is turned on. I also noticed that this speaker lacks in volume no matter the source or media. With my phone streaming music, my phone volume turned all the way up, and the speakers volume all the way up, it is still just noticeably not as loud as other sound bars in our home that have the same specs but are a different brand. Same thing for TV or movies, the volume number shows on screen and we have to go just about to the top in the 60s in order to hear it okay, if we just use the built in TV speakers we can listen in the 15-25 range so having to be up in the 60s we thought was pretty strange. We also noticed the base of the subwoofer could be stronger, again we have an identical setup from a different brand also in the house and the base on that one is just stronger. A huge plus that this Yamaha speaker has is the voice command function with alexa, it is perfect for those already familiar with using alexa. Our household is not quite used to it yet as this is our first device with it, but we are getting the hang of it with streaming amazon music and other options. I was not really impressed with the app needed for this soundbar, for one there is a lack of sound adjustments for this soundbar but I was hoping the app would let me dig in a little more and make minor adjustments but all you can adjust is the same basic functions that the remote can adjust. The app is very basic and it would have been better if no app was needed, and the remote had a little more functionality to it and a menu could be on the TV screen for any adjustments and account sign ins. Overall for someone just looking to upgrade from using their TV's built in speakers and are not too picky, this is a good choice. However if someone is a audiophile and is going to be picky about sound, this might not be the best option, I was a little disappointed in Yamaha with this one, I was expecting more from such a high end brand.

I got this sound bar to upgrade one I was using in our master bed room.
And I'm very pleased so far. The setup was fast and easy. The sub-woofer is wire less only needing plugged in to the wall and pairs with the sound bar automatically. This sound bar was about 8 inches shorter than my last one but has a lot more sound and bass. And has a very nice app that can act as a remote to control the volume and change the different sound options. It also has Alexa built-in freeing up the one I had in my room to be placed elsewhere. I do wish it had more than one HDMI in. But other than that I am super happy with the sound quality and looks.

I've been a fan of Yamaha for a long time, although this is the first sound bar from them that I've ever owned. I have to be honest, this thing is a beast, and I mean that in the best possible way. It's a little bigger than I was expecting but no complaints there. The design is sleek and blends right in to my family room.
After unboxing the bar and subwoofer, I immediately connected everything to my TV and WiFi. I didn't experience any issues with setup, it was a simple process and things were up and running in not time. However, you'll want to make sure to download Yamaha's Sound Bar Controller app. I love having the voice capability with Amazon Alexa built in. When it works, it's very responsive and let's me be even lazier than just using the remote! However, the Yamaha Sound Bar Controller app definitely leaves something to be desired. As of right now, although initial setup was easy, staying connected to the app doesn't always work. And if you want WiFi and Alexa...you need the app to work.
Sounds quality is exactly what I would expect from Yamaha and the subwoofer adds a lot to the sound bar experience. Overall, it's a very nice product. Hopefully, Yamaha can get things figured out with the app so that all features of the sound bar are fully functional. If that gets fixed, this is a 5 star product in my book.
