This Yamaha replaces a Marantz that had similar issues as a previous Denon, ran hot, and I mean HOT. Any duration of loud listening & it went into protection. In my humble opinion, contrary to “audiophile” preferences, Marantz/Denon are overpriced pieces of junk that should be used as a heating device, not as a home theater AVR. Like a prior Yamaha, I can listen to reference level with outstanding clarity, runs cool, and looks extremely appealing. As I upgraded my home theater to Klipsch reference premier speakers, the sound quality is a night and day difference, party mode is a nice feature that allows full use of all speakers. 4K upscaling allows outstanding picture quality. I can EQ the speakers to achieve the perfect calibration. The Marantz went to the garage and when it finally dies of “heat issues”, to the dumpster where it belongs. I decided to go “all in” and went with a Emotiva 5 channel power amplifier to get the hi fidelity experience, coupled with dual SVS subs, my house rock n rolls like it never had before. I used a miniDSP to time align and with Room EQwizzard the subs now have a thunderous bass. Movies are as good as any movie theater I’ve ever been in. The Yamaha 1080 was the missing piece to my quest for audio perfection. To anyone deciding between a Yamaha and Denon/Marantz, Yamaha is by far a superior product, HANDS DOWN. Functionality, ease of use, music, movie experience by far surpasses anything those other brands could ever possibly reproduce,

Upgrading from an older Yamaha I purchased about a decade ago from best Best Buy. It would be current if it had the newer atmos and 4K pass through features. This newer 1080 model has a list of useful features. Alexa and google assistant, wifi, AirPlay 2, ypao, and Dolby atmos. Earc assistant with simplifying connections between devices and has 4K pass through. An awesome receiver with a great amount of features.

This Yamaha RX-A 1080 is a fantastic value for a higher end AV receiver. It provides enough clean power for pushing my Def Tech speakers and towers. The ease of use and control with the AV Controller app on my phone is a game changer.

I went through multiple receivers, Marantz, Sony, etc.... Until I finally gave Yamaha a chance. Wow, blew my mind. I have this connected with a full Bowers and Wilkins set up I'm two Zones. This receivers power handling and true to life sound is amazing, there are several features to talk about but I'll focus on a few. AI Surround This is something that Yamaha has come up with to create a more dramatic sound stage and hit every detail in the content you are viewing. The application of this is excellent and works very well with any content from movies to music to video games. ESS Sabre Digital to Analog Converter This is the best on the market. Period. No one does it better, way better than AKM. Remote and Set Up The remote this comes with is awesome quality, it feels premium and allows for control over devices connected via HDMI. As for the set up, it's super easy and really allows you to adjust any setting you would like. Overall, I'd recommend this receiver to anyone for a home theater or a music set up.

This is an incredibly awesome receiver. I had a Onkyo for years that was also a really good receiver but had it's issues. It ran real hot, the 1st generation hdmi connections would not always have audio and video in sync. At times the hand shake between it newer hdmi devices would cause it to make a loud digital error sound, requiring it to be powered down to stop the noise. Then powering up again it would be ok for a while. After 12 yrs I dedcided to plunk down the money on a new receiver. Lots of research later, I decided this was the one to take home. No problems what so ever. It's easy to set up no need to even look at the manual. The on screen set up system is straight forward. The sound is incredilble, and it doesn't run hot like the Onkyo.

So far, this receiver blows my Marantz away. It is easy to set up and use. The remote is simple and nice. You can bi-amp through the menu and the speaker set up mic was really cool and simple. This was the perfect price point with a ton of features at a price that is not out of control. It is not inexpensive, however a great value. I don't think you can go wrong with this one.

I purchased this receiver after a lot of research to replace an older Onkyo in order to upgrade my equipment to 4K. It has a lot of great features including Dolby Vision and the AI Surround sounds fantastic. Plenty of power to run my Polk RTi A5's at any volume. My only real complaint is that Yamaha unexpectedly removed Bluetooth transmission in this model! One of the features I was really looking forward to was the ability to listen to TV/movies with my wireless headphones. The Aventage line had this for the previous models, but I couldn't figure out how to turn it on after I got this set up. It took some forum input to discover Yamaha had removed it this year! Some of the sites I had been reading for this model had listed it as a feature, probably because nobody would expect them to remove it! Yamaha had no useful response when I asked them about this. Obviously, I'm very disappointed with this, but there are enough great aspects to this receiver that it's not worth returning it.

Bought this to replace an older Denon AVR-3311 and am happy with the results. Great picture quality and the sound, especially for music, is amazing. Haven’t experimented with the Scene feature yet, but am looking forward to giving it a shot for added flexibility and customization. On screen display is so much better than the Denon and the MusicCast app works great. Amazon Music HD sounds fantastic.

I purchased this unit to replace a Marantz 1400W 7.2 Ch. 4K Ultra Pass-Through unit which is no longer available at Best Buy. I actually liked the Marantz better because unlike the Yamaha it allows the user to have more control and tweaking ability. I am not a fan of the Yamaha A1 setting because it does not allow the listener to enjoy the speakers to the full experience. Having said that, there are ways to tweak the Yamaha unit to enjoy the full capacity of a speaker arrangement. One just has to be willing to read the 150 pages of information provided to figure out how to tweak the receiver. I do like the display of the Yamaha a lot better than the Marantz. The Marantz display is a too small to view unless you are standing right in front of the unit. The main reason I replaced the Marantz with the Yamaha was due to firmware problems with the Marantz. It seems that Marantz is not able to keep up with adequate Digital Content Protect software. This caused the Blu-Ray unit to go black during a movie paly back. This wouldn’t be a problem if you didn’t watch a lot of Blu-ray movies utilizing the pass-through setup that I had in place. I do not consider myself a techy and generally only learn what I need to get the most from my purchases. This was a hard lesson since I thought the problem was with the Blu-ray players and took not just one, but two back for credit and replacement during the learning experience to find out that it wasn’t the Blu-ray players but the Marantz receiver that was the problem. I did eventually find someone at Best Buy with the technical knowledge to verify what I has suspected and that is when I purchased the Yamaha. The Yamaha works perfectly with the Blu-ray player and has provides beautiful sound. As I stated before, it did take some tweaking to obtain the sound you want but that is true with any quality unit. I believe it is worth the money but I did find it at an Austin retailer at $200 cheaper than Best Buy is currently offering it. Keep in mind the unit had only been available anywhere for a couple of weeks at this time. They did match the price. It pays to shop around and have them match prices before just going in a purchasing at the cost they initially are asking. I give the overall purchase experience four stars because I found it cheaper at a local retailer. It’s not due to the overall performance of the unit. The performance of unit would receive five stars from me if that were the only factor to consider. The only other thought is the Yamaha 1070 is currently available at Best Buy for $599 as I review the Yamaha 1080. If I were purchasing the unit today I would purchase the 1070.

The AVR itself is great. I was actually looking for the previous generation rx-a3080, which is the outgoing flagship. This Rx-A1080 was at a great price for the open box. Considering that it was open box, A few things had to have fallen out. There wasn’t a remote and the wifi antenna was missing. Unit works perfectly. It’s was a bargain at $559. The 7.2 processing meets my needs. The current gen is 8k compatible and 4K is all I need in the 1080 model. The Yamaha sound is as expected, very harmonic. This is my 3rd Yamaha AVR. I still have a fully functioning rxv375. The 1080 is replacing a glitch ridden Onkyo RX810. The 810 is great when it’s running flawless, but the 1080 has such a sweet natural sound when playing music. Movies and games are great also. It has the AI Surround feature that’s okay. I prefer to choose my own scene experience. This is probably the best version of YPAO room correction I’ve experienced in the Yamaha line up.

We have always purchased Yamaha receivers and this was our second one in the last fifteen years through Best Buy. The folks at BB always shorten the research process by giving you clear facts of all the products to fit your budget. This receiver is simply awesome for both music and movies. It has the dolby atmos and the artificial intelligence. A great value. The Yamaha Music Cast is not as simple as Sonos, but works well.

I upgraded from a similarly power rated Yamaha AVR which was 9 years old. This model has fantastic movie and TV sound. Noticeably better than my previous receiver. It also has excellent at multi room sound and operates form the app intuitively. Very glad I pulled the trigger on it!

This unit has a good mix of versatility, inputs, qnd power. The YPAO calibration, while never perfect (non are) is an excellent start to a well set up home theater. MusicCast is nice to use with the app. I wouldn't consider this budget, but not ultra high end, an excellent middle ground that I'm sure will perform well

I used this model to replace an older Pioneer elite. I am using it with 4 B&W 805’s and a B&W HTM2 and there is plenty of power to spare. There is much better sound and response on this model than compared to my Pioneer. The bigger models have more features and a little more power, which we didn’t need.

Bought this to replace older Yamaha receiver, to upgrade and expand functionality. Yamaha always does it correctly, providing plenty of flexibility, great sound, and unique features. This unit is no exception. Sounds great so far, everything I need. Just setup this receiver yesterday, so still learning features. A few negatives: I am having trouble getting Bose Bluetooth headphones to connect; Not particularly crazy about the Input select configuration on the remote; the scene setup and surround processing type is a bit confusing. I'm sure I will figure it all out. Other than that, I am pleased once again with my Yamaha selection.

Best feature is the surround AI. Scene In a movie. Singing started In a church, continued as they walked outside. While in the church the music was like the effects of a church choir. Further along in the song, the characters walked outside and the AI changed the effects to an outside venue in the middle of the song. Excellent sound effects. Worst feature, attaching the wireless Yamaha Musiccast 20 surround speakers to the Yamaha RX - A1080 av receiver. Once they were connected, they were excellent. I'm fairly tech savvy but required Yamaha Tech support (very good) to walk me through the process.

Once I got a new LG OLED TV from Best Buy earlier this year, I discovered that my old AV reciever could not pass the 4K HDMI signals from my 4K video disc player and Firestick streamer to the television. This reciever solves that problem completely, plus runs my audio streaming services like Spotify, Tidal and SiriusXM. It also has a phono input for my turntable. The surround sound capability of the system really shines, plus I love the DSP settings that mimic famous venues for music listening. The amplifiers are more than enough to drive my speakers to theater levels. I couldn't ask for anything more.
