Great receiver for the sale price.

First of all, I love this receiver. It has plenty of inputs for all my HDMI connections (I'm at 4 and counting# and it supports the Audio Return Channel #if your television has this#. What ARC allowed me to do is run the applications that are native to my TV #built in Netflix for example# and have the audio run to the receiver via the same HDMI cable that is supplying the video to the TV from the receiver. This simply allows you to run less cables and makes input changing a lot simpler for the family. The sound quality is great #you can read up on the really technical details of this on audio forums if you are so inclined# and it supports my record player #a must#.
Speaker setup was quick and easy with the supplied microphone. It acurately identified the size and location of all my speakers + sub and set the levels accordingly.
I have my television, Directv box and receiver all set to power on upon power up of the TV which makes operation very simple for my family. Additionally operation is made easy by the the four Scene buttons on the Yamaha remote. One click and the receiver changes inputs, levels, surround settings etc.
The other thing I really like about this reciever is the network radio option. There are literally over 20 thousand channels to choose from and the audio quality on many is quite good. The one drawback to this particular setup is that in order to bookmark any channels you have to log into your computer and bookmark them. They will then appear in your bookmarked menu option on the receiver. Minor inconvenience in my opinion, but it would be nicer if I could do it directly from the receiver.
The only reason I had to give this a 4 star is becuase upon initial connection to my home network, the receiver indicated that a firmware upgrade was available. I agreed to the upgrade and let it do its magic. Unfortunately the upgrade failed and the receiver was bricked #meaning completely inoperable). It wouldn't power on/off nada. I tried everything I could think of and then turned to the net for support. I was able to find the firmware upgrade online via Yamaha's website and downloaded it to a flash drive. Which then I was able to use to update the receiver. I had to unplug it, hold some buttons, plug it back in and select to upgrade from flashdrive. It was much more of a pain than I wished and in my opinion, someone with a bit less technical abililty probably would have had to return the darn thing.
Don't let that turn you off, I just felt it was worth noting that the upgrade my give you problems but there is a solution available.
Overall I love the receiver and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for great sound, tons of connections and simple use for family members who may not be very technical.

"Once Upon a Time" I was a loyal Yamaha customer

My first two receivers were yamaha and I was very pleased with both. I was especially pleased with my Yamaha RX-V595a, as the sound quality was impeccable and the bass extension unbelievable for a receiver that was in its price range, back in the day-Circa 1998. Needless to say, I finally upgraded to a flat screen this year, and was dreading this leap because that means the heart of the system needs to be replaced now-the receiver.
I went through quite a few receivers before trying out the Yamaha in my home. All of the receivers that I tried were auditioned in my home. I first auditioned the RX-V575, which I thought would be highly comparable to the RX-v595a. Wow! Was I wrong! The weight and build of my older receiver didn't even come close and after reading several reviews on the old vs. newer receivers. More money is being spent on features now than the actual sound being produced. I then realized I was going to have to spend a lot more money to get something sonically comparable.
My next stop was Denon 1912 open box because I was still trying to stay on the cheap. The power on the Denon was much better, but the overall sound of the amp was not what I was looking for. I then got talked into trying Marantz after I listened to the Yamaha Aventage a1020 side by side in the store. They didn’t have the actual model I was looking at, but rather the step up and therefore cut me a deal on the Marantz SR6007. I took this home and got it all set up. I will skip the details, as this is a review for Yamaha.
Cut to, having the Marantz for over a month and feeling buyer’s remorse, as my Paradigm Studio 20 V2s, were beginning to sound very mid rangey to me and never had before. And since I never tried out the top end Yamaha, I felt that it is only fair to Yamaha that I try that receiver in my home too.
This past weekend trekked over to best buy, once again, and purchased the Yamaha a1020. I got it home-cake to setup-plugged in the ypao mike and calibrated the room. The feature set on the Yamaha surpasses the Marantz. The sound quality, however, doesn’t even come close in my book. The bass extension on the Yamaha is far more weak than the Marantz. Keep in mind that it takes much more energy to produce low tones, than it does high tones. Also, the stereo imaging of the two was not as good either. The Marantz has a much more defined sound stage.
I read several reviews on both receivers and companies. One of the things that came up was Denon and Marantz being the same company now and essentially, therefore their receivers are no different. I disagree, as do some others as well, which is prevalent in several reviews.
I will leave you with this. I am very picky when it comes to my audio equipment, yet I am not ready to shell out the money for separates. I like my music and movies to be reproduced with as little coloration as possible and the Marantz and now B&W CM5s do it for me. I never thought that I would stray from being a Yamaha loyalist, but it has happened.
I wanted to write this review-as, I always read several whenever purchasing a large ticket item, but never write my own-to help fill in the gaps that I noticed when I was reading reviews. The best thing is to audition things in your home and with Best Buys finance option and return policy, it makes this very easy.

I just replaced my Denon 4310 with this unit for my kids movie/TV room. It is powering a PSB Imagine W3 soundbar with a Sunfire sub and 4 in-ceiling surrounds. To say this unit outperforms the 2k Denon is an enormous understatement! The build quality for a receiver is the best I have come across, the sound quality is simply beyond reproach when compared to the Denon. Very clean and clear, subwoofer location vanishes, open and huge soundstage! Yamaha's EQ is far superior to Denon's Audyssey which always made thing worse in my room. Set-up is very simple, the odd feature will need a bit of explanation but the manual is only on CD, not uncommon...in my movie room I have a Krell processor that provides the same, very cheap but the wave of the future I am afraid!! Fantastic value and a great product!!! One last note....replace the powercord with an aftermarket upgrade, the difference with this unit is not subtle and is worth every penny you'll spend!!!

Wanna be audiophile here who has owned some nice equipment over the years.
I stretched my budget a bit, but 24 hours into ownership I still have goosebumps.
Connecting and figuring out the features of an AV receiver can be daunting but it connected easily. I had no difficulty figuring out what went where.
Power on and straight forward controls and I am immediately listening to the source I want, in the mode I want, as loud as I want with pristine sound. To be any simpler to set up and use would have required voice control.
My sweet wife brought home a movie, we popped it in and were simply amazed at the surround sound. I have had a home theater system since 1989 (Pioneer 9500vsx, two Dennons) and the sound of this unit, the seperation and depth, the clearness, the total immersion was beyond fantastic.
I then connected a 25 year old Yamaha M60 amp to the zone 2 output and connected a pair of 20 year old Cerwin Vega DX9's to the M60. I quickly found a button labeled 'party mode' on the remote and a selector switch to control volume between zones and proceeded to enjoy the clearest, loudest rock concert I have ever experienced. I fear this grin is permanent.
There is a list of features as long as my arm that I haven't even tried yet.
Bottom line: I have never been happier with an audio product in my life. And no, I don't work for Yamaha or Best Buy.

This is my 3rd Yamaha receiver, I've always been a fan of the clean amp power, build quality and superior design. This one is no different. Music sounds so crisp and clean its amazing! The Android app is top notch, works on both my tablet and my phone. You can customize this thing to fit your needs. Want to listen to FLAC streaming from a PC while watching the football game?? You can do it. Internet Radio while playing PS3?? You can do it. Dolby Digital Plus from Netflix? No problem!
I've set up 2 DNLA servers on my PC: Windows Media Player for MP3 and Media Monkey for FLAC. This receiver browses both servers with no problem, plays the music with tags, and has the ability to minimize the UI so that you can watch TV ( or whatever you like ) while the music plays. Same goes for FM radio / Net Radio / or USB playback.
This unit is amazing, highly recommended!!!

Upgraded from a 12-year old Sony AV receiver and couldn't be happier with my first Yamaha product. Even with the same 5.1 speakers and wires, the positive difference in audio quality and surround performance is immediately noticeable. Almost every feature imaginable is built in, even a phono input. Many features, such as inputs, can be personalized. Overkill? Maybe... But do check out the optional wifi module (YWA-10) for streaming capabilities - it's cheap additional functionality though I'm still exploring what it can do. Also for what it's worth, the RX-A1020 is not manufactured in China.
Setup can be daunting, like any good AV receiver, but follow the instructions and quick setup guide for success. I found the setup of a second zone to be quite difficult but eventually got it working. Out of the box, the soft-touch door for the front control panel was half detached, which was very surprising. It pops back on easily and hasn't been a problem since.
Don't hesitate - this is a wonderful AV receiver and it will rock your world as an upgrade to non-premium models.

This receiver has everything. I don't know what else to say. You can hook it to the Internet, Your Computer, So many features to really mention.
I had a Integra before, but the features and sound of this receiver is even better. It was only $899.99 in the store when I bought it, but I now would have paid full price for it. What a receiver. 3 Years factor warranty on parts and labor also.

Great Sound, but not good for networked audio

I love the sound of this receiver. I have it pushing JMLab speakers and they sound great. The reason for the low number of stars is that the networking capability is not that great. It will play for a song or two, then the receiver will stop playing with an "Access Error". This effects Pandora, DLNA capabilities, basically any function that requires network capability. I have sent a few emails to support and have little support from them in terms of getting this resolved. They told me to turn off the unit and try again. This is not the way I like to listen to music. Anyway, I am hoping for a fix and I thought I would warn you audio lovers out there who may want to use this functionality. I just had another interaction with support, this guy told me to unplug the receiver I do not know about how you have it set up, but getting to the plugs is a really hard thing to do in my setup!
