Such a wonderful movie with a great story. So moving and inspirational. If you're a ghibli fan or a fan of movies such as Wolf Children, or Patema Inverted, then this is one to add to your collection.

    Simply a masterpiece in storytelling

Your Name is a Japanese animated film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, based off his own novel of the same name. I was reluctant to watch this movie at first because besides the works of Studio Ghibli, I am not the biggest fan of anime. However, Your Name was making waves around the internet, with people considering it the best anime movie of all time. I am someone who is naturally gravitated towards hype, and with expectations leveled, and my mind opened, and I went ahead and saw the film. And boy, when the credits rolled, I was stunned, mesmerized and enchanted with just how beautiful this movie was in every way. My relationship with anime does not extend beyond Ghibli films, first few seasons of Pokémon and JRPG cutscenes, the reason being I always feel Japanese animation lacks gravitas and instead replaces it with heavy-handed over-the-top storytelling and voice acting. I was glad to see Your Name not succumbing to any of those tropes, in fact, Your Name being an animated film, was able to make laugh, cry, feel anxious and fulfilled all within 90 minutes, something most live-action movies with real actors cannot even dream of trying. Your Name is about two people from different parts of Japan, through some cosmic fate, body-swapped with one another. Mitsuha, a girl from a small rural town, wakes up in the body of Taki, a boy from big city Tokyo, and vice versa. Not knowing why this is happening to them, they both communicate via leaving messages on each other’s phone and notebook. Mitsuha, always dreaming of the big city and tired of her country life, takes this magical opportunity to live in Tokyo and runs with it. They both help each achieve things they otherwise would not have been able to achieve. And through interactions with each other’s friends and families, they begin to learn about one another. One day, however, the body-swapping stopped, and Taki sets out on a journey to find Mitsuha to meet her in person.

Best anime film I've seen for a while!

I'm a pretty casual anime fan. I've seen most of Studio Ghibli movies, Akira, and maybe a dozen of other anime features. Don't watch any shows. Stumbled across this just by chance and glad I did! From an animation standpoint, I've never seen anything better! Not just in anime, but all animated films. CoMix Wave Films animation studio attention to detail and use of colors is really out-of-this-world (Garden of Words by same studio and director/writer is another example)! Original music for the movie by a Japanese band called Radwimps and the orchestra score are all great and go well with scenes in the movie. English voice-overs are also top notch for an anime. The story is the best part but I don't want to give anything away beyond the description of the movie which doesn't really do the movie justice. Honestly, the description is why I almost didn't give this movie a chance to begin with but at least it gives you a clue or starting point on what the movie is about. Really makes the movie not sound special...but it is! Had a couple big twists that I didn't see coming is all I will say. Only thing I would say negative (if you can call it that) about it is it's more of a teenager age and up movie. It isn't "My Neighbor Totoro" where it is more aimed at kids. Not because there is nudity, violence, and language, but kids will just have a hard time staying interested with the story. I just mention that as I could see that being a negative review for the movie. All in all, I recommend this if you like anime or animation films in general.

Overall the movie is fantastic. There's a great plot twist (that's easy to guess) that will have you holding your breathe towards the end of the movie regardless if you saw the twist coming or not.

Love this movie. Fairly simple plot to follow. As you watch it more, you catch more of the details and can better connect the events in the movie together. Worth a watch.

It’s a sad/heartbreaking movie with happy note in the end. In my opinion, it’s a “masterpiece”. The transitioning from heavy to light drama; melodramatic.

Shinkai's Opus, the Great Culmination of His Art

I've followed Makoto Shinkai's work since the beginning when he released Voices of Distant Star, and he ranks among my favorite directors ever amid the likes of Spielberg, Nolan, Thomas Anderson, and various others. I already own the collector's edition 4K release of this, imported from Japan, but this steelbook was too good to pass up for it's lovely packaging, included digital copy, and of course blu-ray version that I can utilize as my loaner copy to friends. Audio quality is solid as is the vibrant imagery and picture quality. Included special features are a nice addition as well, and the digital copy seems to work well enough via the Funimation app. I've yet to watch the English dub myself, but it's nice that it's there for people interested. I'm not a sub/dub elitist by any means, my only exposure to the film has been in Japanese is all. Highly recommend this film if you haven't seen it. A trademark of most all of Shinkai's work is the focus on a centralized relationship and the intimacy therein between his characters. This element is always a poignant, emotional grounding force even amid all manner of fantastical elements that occur surrouding the chracters throughout all of his stories.

Premise of the movie is simple: Taki is a young man who lives in Tokyo, while Mitsuha is a young woman who lives in a small town. They've never met, yet they are connected by strings of fate. One day they start randomly swapping bodies for a day. At first they just they think it's just a weird dream, until their friends ask them about why they were acting weird. As they realize what's going on, they have to contend with the various differences of big city vs small town, male vs female, while not revealing anything to their friends. They start becoming friends, perhaps even more over time, until suddenly they stop swapping. As his memories start to fade, Taki tries to find the small town where Mitsuha lives to confess, only to find a surprise is waiting for him. I'll let you find out what that surprise is, if you want. The music is performed by a group called Radwimps who actually sing their songs in both languages, and it is really great, the whole soundtrack (like the movie in my opinion) is amazing. Fun Fact: They even did a live concert in Japan to the movie so you can see the orchestra performing the songs with the movie in the background on Youtube, but they are set during spoiler scenes, so watch the movie first.
