The video and audio (atmos soundtrack) on this disc are fantastic! Took off a star for the content of the movie (it’s ok, buuut…), but that’s subjective, right? A must for home theaters.

I had to break up the 242 minute runtime over two nights, but it’s easy for me to say that ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE is a vast improvement over the Frankensteined theatrical version released in 2017 that had Joss Whedon brought on to rewrite and alter Snyder’s original vision late in production. I’m not all that interested in the how’s and why’s of this version’s existence, just what it had to offer. It’s far from a flawless effort, but I enjoyed it and it feels more like the vision of a singular artist. I’m not going to summarize the plot for two reasons. First, I don’t want to spoil anything for the folks who haven’t seen it yet, as it just dropped this weekend. Second, it somewhat retains the same structure and narrative of the original release, albeit with much more detail, world building, and character beats. The tone is also more inline with the previous two Snyder DCEU films (2013’s MAN OF STEEL and 2016’s BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE). For good or ill, everything is expanded on, allowing character arcs to breathe and providing explanations for points left vague or muddled in the theatrical release. Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Flash (Ezra Miller), and especially Cyborg (Ray Fisher) are the biggest beneficiaries of this effort. The so-called Big Two of the comics industry have always had contrasting approaches for their superheroes. Marvel primarily aims for relatable humanistic characters. We’re supposed to care about Peter Parker’s struggles just as much as Spider-Man’s latest supervillain dustup. On the other hand, DC has preferred to cast their heroes as more godlike figures in a modern mythology. This is, of course, a simplification, but I think most fans would agree with that assessment. In any case, Snyder, scripter Chris Terrio, and DP Fabian Wagner seem to have embraced this approach (Snyder and Terrio also share a story credit with Will Beall). We are encouraged to view these characters as larger than life. The scope is epic (how can it not be with that runtime?) and our leads are often framed in tableaux meant to inspire primal awe. The film takes its cues from ancient mythology, going so far as to literally incorporate it into the narrative. The titled chapter breaks further invoke this idea, making us feel like we’re poring over some tome. None of the story feels inessential, and the editing by David Brenner, Carlos M Castillion, and Dody Dorn maintains the pacing, but as with BATMAN V SUPERMAN, it feels like there’s more than enough material to have made two separate movies. I suppose that’s not really a complaint, but four hours is a long time to sit through a film. I liked the film quite a bit, and so I’m sure I’ll revisit it on disc, but I don’t know that I’ll ever consume the film in a single sitting. That disruption fundamentally changes how a film is experienced, diminishing it in my opinion. If you have the attention span and the time to watch this is a single session, I’d recommend it. The earnestness of the atmosphere sometimes borders on being silly, but I think the sheer visual grandeur envelops the self-seriousness. Much has been made of the open matte pillar boxed aspect ratio attempting to mimic Imax formatting, but I never thought the picture was cramped. I often found myself enraptured with the stunning visuals, dizzying vistas, and depth of field. The CG effects have been improved here, although there are unfortunately still more than a few instances of unconvincing videogame-esque moments. The score by Junkie XL does a nice job of incorporating various character themes from previous DCEU films while also assisting with the epic tone and visual bombast. Additionally, I also enjoyed the incorporation of more iconic DC characters and DC universe lore into this version. At the end of the day, despite some missteps, ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE is a huge improvement over the mutilated original release. Hopefully, this serves as a course correction for the DCEU overall, as the series feels like it’s floundering and lacks direction and purpose. Snyder’s overall vision of DC’s beloved characters may not be my personal favorite, but it feels cohesive. I am neither a slavish Snyder fanboy nor a hater, but I generally enjoy his work even if I don’t think he’s ever regained the heights he achieved with his remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD. Here’s to hoping Snyder gets to continue his Justice League story, as there are more than a few tantalizing follow ups teased. Recommended for fans of slow motion sequences of people moving at high speed, the superheroes as modern myths idea, and vastly different director’s cuts.
