One has to be a decided connoisseur of alternative music culture to associate the title InchSentimentale JugendInch (sentimental youth) with the short-lived experimental noise act of the same name, founded by Alexander Hacke (Einstürzende Neubauten) and his then significant other Christiane Flescherinow (also known as Christiane F. from the bestselling non-fiction book InchWe Children From Bahnhof ZooInch) in the early 1980s. However, it is for a reason that Italian indie rock flagship KLIMT 1918 names it's latest double album after this footnote of pop history, namely a conscious hint at the underlying mood of the songs. InchSentimentale JugendInch captures West Berlin in it's pulsating, nihilistic glory during the late 70s - just as David Bowie did with his Berlin Trilogy of the albums InchLowInch, InchHeroesInch and InchLodgerInch - and processes notions from Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's award-winning movie InchThe Lives Of OthersInch, be it the foggy winter atmosphere in East Berlin during the early 80s or the female protagonist's melancholy. Eight years after the 'Soundtrack For The Cassette Generation' InchJust In Case We'll Never Meet AgainInch, KLIMT 1918 stay true to their sound, alternating the energetic with the wistful by means of shoegaze, indie and new wave from the 80s and 90s, yet for the first time, the sonic spectrum gets expanded with the signature guitar effects and drum rhythms of 50s and 60s pop. Ultimately, InchSentimentale JugendInch harks back to such diverse artists as The Chameleons, iLikeTrains, Cocteau Twins, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Everly Brothers, Sigur Ros or Dead Can Dance and may be suitably tagged Inchdirty and noisy three beats dream popInch. Around the Fur the follow-up to Deftones' passionate, aggressive Adrenaline, sees the California quartet expanding on the sheer rage of their earlier work, adding new, more sinister shades to their already extreme sound. The opening InchMy Own Summer (Shove It),Inch serves as an introduction to the album's sonic theme sinewy guitars and eerie whispers alternate with fast, violent crunch. Sepultura's Max Cavallero contributes guitar and vocals to InchHeadup,Inch while InchMXInch finds singer Chino trading off vocal lines with Annalynn Cunningham, (wife of Deftones' drummer Abe) in an acerbic take on the rock star mentality. Vocal acrobat Moreno attacks a variety of styles his breathy, psychotic recitations sound downright industrial, while the album's calmer, more brooding moments show his gift for haunting melody. Behind him, guitarist Stephen Carpenter's heavy wall of sound is astoundingly muscular, yet inspiringly agile. When Deftones' hellish fury hits full tilt, as it always does on this album, Moreno's voice erupts into screams which are best described as otherworldly, transforming this intense musical firestorm into a hurtling juggernaut of aggression.
