For shoppers comparing air filtration options, the key is to look beyond the term “electrostatic” and check the filter’s documented performance, intended application and compatibility with the heating and cooling system or air purifier. An electrostatic charge alone does not mean a filter meets HEPA filtration standards, and particle filters generally do not remove gases or odors without additional filtration media, such as activated carbon. Choosing the best electrostatically charged air filter for your home starts with the correct filter dimensions and the performance specifications recommended by your equipment manufacturer. Electrostatically charged air filters often use synthetic materials such as polypropylene. Some reusable designs combine layers of synthetic media with metal mesh and a rigid frame. The exact materials vary by filter design.

Both types are available. Disposable electrostatic air filters are designed to be replaced, while washable models are designed for cleaning and reuse according to the manufacturer's instructions. The electrostatic label alone does not indicate whether a filter is washable.

Pleated describes the folded construction of the filter media, while electrostatic describes its electrical charge. These terms are not mutually exclusive: an air filter can have both pleated media and an electrostatic charge.
