Four-wheel drive, often labeled 4WD, means the RC car’s drivetrain sends power to all four wheels. Depending on the design, shafts or belts transfer power between the front and rear drive assemblies.
Four-wheel-drive RC cars can use electric motors or fuel-powered engines. Electric models run on rechargeable batteries and may have brushed or brushless motors, while nitro models use fuel formulated for nitro RC engines.
Ready-to-run, or RTR, RC cars come assembled and typically include a radio system, though batteries and a charger may be separate. RC car kits require assembly, and the motor, electronic speed controller, radio equipment, and other components may need to be purchased separately.
A typical RC car uses one radio channel for steering and another for throttle. Additional channels may operate features such as lights, a selectable transmission, or locking differentials, depending on the model.
Routine maintenance generally includes removing dirt, checking fasteners, inspecting tires and drivetrain components, and looking for wear on gears, bearings, and drive shafts. Lubrication and service requirements vary by design, so follow the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance.
