Synopsis

Sleeping with the Enemy
Hot off her success in Pretty Woman, Julia Roberts starred in this thriller about a battered wife stalked by her abusive husband. Roberts plays Laura Burney, the wife of a rich investment counselor, Martin (Patrick Bergin). Martin appreciates his wife as a trophy, but at home he abuses her for not keeping the house as clean as he would like it. The verbal abuse descends into physical violence --so much so that Laura decides to disappear rather than live a life under Martin as a brutalized slave. Laura fakes her own death by drowning, and relocates to Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she changes her name to Sara Waters. She starts a relationship with her friendly Iowa neighbor Ben Woodward (Kevin Anderson), but her happiness is short-lived. Martin has discovered that Laura has staged her drowning and is coming to Iowa to reclaim his possession. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Joseph Ruben has fashioned a by-the-numbers, glossy, engrossing, if trashy and predictable, thriller. It is imminently watchable, of course, and features the mega-watt smile of our fave, Julia Roberts, who improbably dons theatrical costumes in the midst of a semi-breakdown to the tune of Brown-Eyed Girl. The men around Julia, both her over-the-top psychopathic husband and her would-be new, soft boyfriend (Patrick Bergin and Kevin Andersen, respectively) are completely dispensable, and Ruben knows this: he keeps us monumentally focused on the beguiling Ms. Roberts throughout. It is easy to forget and forgive lapses in credibility (there are many), and the opening twenty minutes have a glossy, antiseptic queasiness about them that seem to be setting up a much more deft and daring thriller. All of that vanishes, along with common sense, but it hardly matters. This movie is one you can watch over and over and over again, a bunch of chips nearby: it moves quickly, harmlessly, and gives you what you want when you just don't feel much like thinking.

Love this movie! I enjoy Julia Roberts very much anyway so it's hard for me not to like her acting. I'm a fan. This movie has a good plot. She's in a marriage with a controlling man. Everything has to be perfect. She must be the perfect wife. When she plans her elaborate escape she never is fully free of this man. He tracks her down. Suspenseful and although a predictable ending, gotta love it!

Julia Roberts had always been a great actor even in her earlier career as with this movie. She expresses courage, bravery and will to survive as she endures a controlling and abusive relationship. Her strategy to escape the harsh conditions of living with her abusive husband with impeccable.

Next to pretty woman this is my favorite Julia Roberts movie. Her escape from the abusive spouse was quite clever. The movie gives hope to those in a relationship like this one and is a must see!
