Loosely inspired by Willie Nelson's real-life personal and professional ups and downs, this bittersweet comedy/drama stars Nelson as Doc Jenkins, a country musician stuck in a rotten contract that prevents him from making any money on his own songs. With help from his old singing partner (Kris Kristofferson), Doc hatches a plan to sidestep his bad deal by having an up-and-coming singer (Lesley Ann Warren) perform his tunes.
