    Buying a subwoofer speaker.

    Types of subwoofers.

The two main types of subwoofers are passive subwoofers and active subwoofers. Passive subwoofers require an external amplifier to power them while active subwoofers, also known as powered subwoofers (because they need AC power), have their own built-in amplifier.

While active subwoofers are often the best choice for home theater and stereo systems or live performances, passive subwoofers can work well if you have a powerful amplifier. They are also generally lower in price and lighter—which can make them convenient in some car audio arrangements.

Additionally, subwoofers differ in how they emit their sound. A ported subwoofer allows air to escape, which can boost certain bass notes that might otherwise get lost. Some smaller subwoofers achieve a similar boom by using passive radiators. Meanwhile, a sealed subwoofer will create a smoother sound with fewer peaks. Bandpass subwoofers are often used for professional live sound events because their two chambers make them more controllable. And horn-loaded subwoofers create very strong, directional sound.

    Benefits of a subwoofer.

If you’re looking into which audio system is best for your home, it involves making decisions about a lot of components. You might wonder if a subwoofer is even something that you need as part of your setup if you’re not one to throw large dance parties at home. However, if you have ever watched a movie with and without a subwoofer on your premium TV, you will know that a subwoofer is about much more than setting a strong dance beat. By bringing the lowest pitches of the music and sound into the room, a subwoofer speaker fills out the feel of musical pieces and soundscapes.

A subwoofer also helps to reduce the distortion of low notes at higher volumes, which can make your music sound clearer and crisper. And it can take some of the load off of your other speakers, better balancing out the overall sound load and quality. In other words, once you introduce a subwoofer to your home audio system, you will never want to go back.

If you need help with installation, don’t worry, Best Buy has you covered. Just select the kind of home audio setup you need, and our professionals will be at your door.
