Synopsis

The third and final season of Star Trek is frequently written off as the series' nadir, if only because creator Gene Roddenberry had relinquished a great deal of his creative control to the NBC executives and to new producer Fred Freiberger). Another reason given for the series' decline was the decision to cut the budgets to the bone, and to depend more on "house" writers than established science-fiction specialists. Also, there was a heavier reliance upon gimmickry and gadgetry than in previous years, upsetting those purists who preferred strong characterizations and story values to the standard sci-fi/fantasy cliches. But while Season Three was overall the weakest, especially in terms of ratings, several of the individual episodes are among the finest that Star Trek has to offer. We get off to a good start with the opener, "Spock's Brain", in which the titular organ is "kidnapped" from its owner Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy). Attorney Melvin Belli makes his acting debut as a sinister, corruptive life force (not a lawyer, but close!) in "And the Children Shall Lead". The crew of the Starship Enterprise is forced to sacrifice themselves during the Gunfight at the OK Corral in "Spectre of the Gun". "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" is an allegorical drama in which the fate of a civilization is determined by a duel to the death between its two last survivors (Frank Gorshin, Lou Antonio), whose faces are half-black and half-white. And in the series finale "Turnabout Intruder", the mind of Captain Kirk (William Shatner) is exchanged with that of his embittered ex-lover (Sandra Smith)--and vice versa. The season's most controversial episode was "Plato's Stepchildren", originally telecast November 22, 1968, in which Kirk and officer Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) share the first interracial kiss ever seen on network television. ~ Hal Erickson

    Star Trek Original Season 3

This is an outstanding television series that looks and sounds better on Blueray than it ever did on TV. I should know, I'm a longtime avid fan of the original series. Nearly every episode holds up very well and withstands the test of time. There are however, a few (very few) that have not aged well, but even those episodes are quaint and are certainly a product of their times. The enhanced visual effects are excellent and do not draw attention to themselves so they are a much appreciated addition. You can watch all these episodes without the enhanced effects if you choose to, for a more authentic viewing experience. My only complaint is the annoying episode selection screen which is not exactly intuitive or self explanatory. In other words you have to play around with it a bit before you understand how to change episodes, but once you get it, it's no longer a problem. Other than that, this is as good as Star Trek gets and I highly recommend it to fans of all the other Star Trek spinoffs. After all, you wouldn't have Star Trek TNG, Star Trek DS9, Star Trek Voyager or Star Trek Enterprise without the 5 year mission of James T. Kirk and his original crew. (Even if the mission lasted only 3 years.) This set is well worth your time and investment.

Long Awaited & Worth that Wait!

I've waited a long time to own these remastered original series episodes. From the time I first saw an updated episode air on the SyFy channel, I have wanted these. Then because of Paramount's contract and the now defunct format wars, they first released these shows on HD DVD. So more waiting for Blu-ray... But finally! If you're a stickler for maintaining the originals as they first aired in the '60's, don't fret! The episodes were put together in a very clever way! You can watch the shows exactly as they appeared in the 60's. However, if like me you crave updated special effects, you can simply hit the 'angle' button on your Blu-ray plyer's remote when a special effect or external ship shot is onscreen, and you move 'seemlessly' to the updated effect! With basically no time delay, this feature allows you to toggle between the original show and the updated effects for the same show! My hat is way off! Great job to those who put this together! I hope this spawns a trend in updating older shows! As to the episodes on this 3rd season set, well that's pretty subjective. These shows have been around a long time. You probably have your favorites, as do I! Fortunately, all 3 seasons are available, so if your favorite show isn't in this 3rd season set, pick up season 1 or 2! Regardless of your favorite episode, these Blu-ray sets are well worth picking up! Enjoy!

This was an upgrade for me from the dvd version to blu ray. When I purchased it in Sept 2015, this season was only $25. For Star Trek, this is unusually cheap. I imagine that means that a new version will be released for the 50th anniversary of Trek in 2016, and the stores are clearing out the old stuff. This has both the original version and the remastered special effects version. It is a great value if you can fid it for $25 and are not concerned that a better version may be coming soon.

I saw this in the store and had to get it. I haven't bought any of the original series over the years. Picked up season 3 as well as 1 and 2. THe new CGI is both amazing and a little different as I remember most of the series growing up in my childhood. Haven't actually gotten to watching season 3 yet, I'm half way through season 2. But hey, Star Trek is the best. From Spock's beard to Spock's brain ... yes shameless Prog plug, ... but not as we know it.

The third & final season of Original Series Star Trek was an uneven one. But in fairness, there were some good points in it. And understanding that, this is a well-done set. Once again, the remastered effects versions are here in full HD along with the original untouched versions. Bonus features from the DVD set are here as well.

Excellent enhanced visual effects and has great audio. The Blu-ray Disc with enhanced version made the series look like it was filmed yesterday. The price was reasonable at Best Buy. I would suggest to anybody to purchase Star Trek The Original Series in Blu-ray Disc. Wish the Series could have gone longer. Great cast. One of a kind.

This classic sci-fi show is still fun to watch over and over again, but now in high-definition. it's like watching it for the first time! Great transfers and having the choice to watch the episodes with updated effects or original is awesome! Great extras as well!

The last season of the classic series had some excellent episodes & a few lousy ones, but they all look better remastered, cleaner & uncut. The extras are interesting. I bought this as a Christmas present, but I'm going to enjoy it just as much!
