A factory accident in the small town of Lillian, Ohio leaves an emotionally distant man (Kyle Chandler) a widower and his son without the one parent he could relate to. At the reception in their home, Deputy Jackson Lamb (Chandler) ejects a man who showed up intoxicated and his son Joe (Joel Courtney) bears witness. In an effort to buy time so that he himself and his son can come to grips with the loss, Jackson tries to persuade Joe to go to baseball camp for the summer and, at the same time, disparages his friends whose interests include the production of monster films for one and explosive for another. As they are in the middle of one such film and Joe promised to help complete it, he declines the offer. One night, he sneaks out of the house to joins his friends in filming a scene at a train station and they are all nearly killed when a train is derailed after a head-on collision with a speeding pickup. It is the collision and subsequent events that are the source for most of the film. The train belonged to the Air Force and before long, so does the crash site and most of the town as it is placed under a de facto martial law. Joe and Charles, the director of the film that brought them to the train station in first place, examine their footage and see something escaping the train. Written and directed by J. J. Abrams of Lost fame and with Steven Spielberg co-producing, Super 8 is easily a step above efforts like Cloverfield and Artificial Intelligence while falling just short of films like E.T., Super 8 is a welcomed addition to the sci-fi genre and a great time to be had at the movies.

I saw Super 8 and LOVED it. I laughed, I cried, and I jumped up out of my seat 8 times! It was a fun, fun nostalgic ride on an early summer afternoon. The late 1970's music, costumes, location, and set props were right on. Fantastic cinematography, sound design, and special affects. Ahhhh, but this movie has heart in the story and in the acting. Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, and the new young actor who plays Joe Lamb steal the movie. This 'coming of age' story is set in a more innocent time, before middle schoolers began 'hooking up.' The rest of the kids who make up the motley film crew are believably hilarious. Each cleverly has his or her own specialty in film making. You can only imagine a young JJ Abrams doing the same thing when he was a boy. Super 8 is one of the BEST movie I've seen in a long, long time.

The initial reviews for Super 8 were glowing. The later ones were mixed. Thus I was a bit leaary when I purchased this blu ray. However, much to my relief and happiness, I found myself agreeing with the glowing early ratings. This is pure escapism with a plethora of special effects that challenges top notch sound and video systems. Take away some occasional bad language by the kids who ara the the main focus of the story and it could have been vintage Spielberg. That said, the language was not near as bad as some reviewers suggested. It was just modern "kis-speak." While not a TV reviewer I give Super 8 but thimbs up.

If E.T. hadn't met the kid first

This alien is a lot bigger than E.T., but you get the point. Movie is not for little kids, maybe about ten and up depending on the maturity. The story is dark (alien didn't have a good time in govt. custody and is having revenge issues), has multiple storylines that work and there are just enough underlying themes that make it enjoyable to watch. The only unbelievable part is the end military fight sequence. It was a little over the top, but didn't ruin the movie. The only reasonable follow-up to this movie would be for the alien to come back with reinforcements to raze the planet.

This movie reminds me of ET and The Goonies. Not intended for younger audience though. This movie takes ET to another level...a much better level. Where ET was slow and boring, this movie is exciting, suspenseful and funny. A must for movie lovers. The picture quality felt like you were watching a 80s movie (since that's the setting). Very well done. The sound quality on the other hand is amazing. It pushes your 5.1 or better 7.1 to the limit.

While not a bad movie i was certainly underwelmed. with all reviews i guess i expected more. A good watch but don't expect to much. story line was predictable 20 minutes into movie with little suspense or suprise. If your looking to kill 2 hrs on a rainy saturday this might be a good choice. if you're looking for more it might be a bit of a disappointment.

When I first saw this movie my first thought was this is an updated and better version of ET. Then you think about the characters and realize it is part Goonies and part ET. This movie is incredible. Not intended for young children though. Hand full of scary parts. Excellent cinematography. Felt like I was watching a movie made in the 80s.

This movie is one of the best I've seen all year. It's what most should model after. It's has its dramatic scenes, serious scenes, and actions scences. They tie in perfectly with the overall plot. Not once was I lost but it did keep me guessing. This is a must buy!
