    Synopsis

    The Immigrant
A Polish woman separated from her sister on Ellis Island struggles to survive on the streets of Manhattan in this period drama from writer/director James Gray (We Own the Night, Two Lovers). The year is 1921. Polish sisters Ewa (Marion Cotillard) and Magda Cybulski (Angela Sarafyan) are seeking a brighter future when they board a boat bound for New York City. Upon arriving on Ellis Island, however, Magda is placed in quarantine after receiving a grim and unexpected medical diagnosis. A stranger in a strange land, Ewa falls under the spell of the malevolent Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix), who forces her into prostitution. Yet a ray of hope soon comes in the form of Bruno's cousin Orlando (Jeremy Renner), a suave magician whose romantic interests in Ewa may be her ticket to a life worth living. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

      BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED & WELL ACTED

The Immigrant could have been a special movie, and it's often right there on the edge. It's beautifully crafted and very well acted but it too often rings shallow rather than overflows with depth and legitimate character journey. The movie's plot feels yanked straight out of a history text paragraph or two on Ellis Island immigration that strives to be more but never quite achieves a fuller, richer sense of purpose. Still, it's a worthwhile endeavor if only to become absorbed in the superficial beauty the film has to offer and to consider both what is (a movie on the cusp of greatness) and what could have been (a masterpiece). Anchor Bay's Blu-ray release of The Immigrant features excellent video and audio. Supplements include a commentary and a short featurette. Recommended.

I bought the movie because Marion Cotillard is in it. It was great. It was a little weird to see her play a Polish character as she is French, but I got over it and really enjoyed the movie.

I was able to price match this item and get a great deal on it without having to go to another store. I was happy to find it on BluRay because the quality of the film is so much better.

The movie had a great cast and it really got one involved which is the sign of doing what films ought to do. One really will feel emotions of pity with this one.

Great movie. Maybe not for everyone but definitely a great one. Also a very good price at Best Buy for a new release blu ray.

A very well made film that is let down a bit by the predictable melodramatical script.
