    Synopsis

    The Ninth Gate
An authority on rare books is drawn into a confrontation with the forces of darkness in this thriller directed by Roman Polanski. Dean Corso (Johnny Depp) is a rare book broker who makes his living tracking down valuable items for rich bibliophiles. Corso is hired by Boris Balkan (Frank Langella), a millionaire New Yorker with a vast collection of occult literature and a keen interest in "The Nine Gates to the Kingdom of Shadows." Legend has it that the book was co-written by Satan in the 17th century, and only three copies are known to exist; the owner of one recently sold the book to Balkan a few days before killing himself. Balkan wants Corso to find the other two copies (one owned by a Mr. Fargas in Portugal and the other by a French collector named Kessler) and examine them to determine if they are forgeries. Corso is told to be thorough and spare no expense. He begins by visiting Liana Telfer (Lena Olin), the widow of the man who once owned Balkan's copy of the book, who has an unusually strong desire to get the book back, and confers with his friend Bernie (James Russo), who soon turns up dead, in a manner much like an illustration from the book. Corso learns that the book contains clues to a puzzle that will allow people to call up the devil, and certain people will stop at nothing to find the missing parts of the formula. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Johnny Depp excels in developing his characters & really this is where his career started to make in-roads into the realm of genius! Movie: Depp plays Dean Corso, a less than ethical rare antique book dealer, who is hired to find and examine extremely rare copies of a 17th century book on the occult titled " The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows ". Corso is given an offer he cannot refuse ($$$) & he is off to Europe to find the surviving copies with specific instructions to find any variations of the text or engravings. After being pursued, attacked, seduced & robbed Corso realizes that this book has more than just monetary value & begins to become entangled in the pursuit of Satanic powers & Occult rituals. The ending will leave you guessing and requires quite a bit to the imagination.. Video: The Ninth Gate picture is just average, when compared to other Blu-rays. I saw no background depth while actors remained in focus, possibly just the filming style, but does not enhance this Blu-ray in any way.. Colors are neutral, but look natural to the film. Fleshtones look accurate. Nothing really jumps out at you with this release, but it is head and shoulders above standard Dvd. Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1, is always nice to have included but does not benefit this soundtrack much, since its mainly dialog driven. Dialogue is crisp and clean with Pans transitioning smoothly, even tho the soundfield is a bit front-heavy but ultimately immersive, and dynamics are solid. Extras: Theatrical Trailer - Audio Commentary - Featurette - Storyboard Selections - Gallery of Satanic Drawings - I thoroughly enjoyed " The Ninth Gate " & it still remains one of my all time Johnny Depp films.. P.S. Check out Johnny Depp in his 1994 film " Ed Wood "....Brilliant!

I still dont understand how this movie was so bad. it seemed like it coud be great: Polanski, Depp, an inverted cross on the cover: but it was awful. i could compare this to a good made for tv movie. This seemed like a half hearted and ill-informed look at satanism. And im definetly not a satanist, but im certainly familiar with it, and this movie basically made a mockery of it. I could basically summarize this 3 hour movie as this: Depp walks around, finds a book, someone takes the book, then he gets it back, then someone takes it again, then he goes looking for it, then someone takes it again, but then he finds it again, someone lights themself on fire, then someone else takes the book, then an odd but hot girl comes and helps him find it again, then they find a really cheesy satanic cult, then the movie is over. and throughout all 3 hours of that was the most awful soundtrack. It really reminded me of Desperate Housewives.

I don't know what this guy's talking about, this movie was great! Just like Chistianity, Satanism also has many branches and many different interpretations. This movie explores one of those branches. I've studied numorous religions including this one. Some of the interpretations of this vastly growing religion are not what people think, nor are they what was interpreted in the film. Like I said, this movie delves into just one of the many different practices of Satanism, and just one of it's many theoretical rituals as presented in many of the books on the subject written over 2,000+ years. In fact, this religion predates Christianity, (many people don't know that.) This is a very intriguing film that I recommend to anyone interested in films of the occult. Also, you should check out Crowley and Necronomicon.

Johnny Depp plays this role perfectly! Nine Gates has smooth plot flow, excellent story telling and top acting. There is little to no action, this movie is all about story and as the description says, this movie is for adult audiences only. Frank Langella and Lena Olin have supporting roles that are acted with precision, poise and an evil grace! This movie is recommended for those who are Depp fans and for those who are looking for a solid story line with plenty of twists and turns! The symphony soundtrack that accompanies this movie is top notch and Sumi Jo's soprano voice carries beautifully. The only draw back to this release is that there are little or no extras on the disc. You get an up close look at the drawings and some commentary but nothing else.

The movie was very good overall. The fast paced action is a good offset to the back-story. Along with the action you have to follow the characters in order to follow the story which keeps you engrossed in the movie. The acting does a good job in making you care about the characters. As a note the description on the Best Buy site is incorrect the movie is actually 133 minutes long.

This is one of my wife and I's favorite movies! As fans of Johnny Depp, I think this is among his best films. It has a great plot, loosely based on truth, that is very intriguing. (We have a cllection of such books, that's how we know.) Great acting, great storyline, I highly recommend it! Also, two other good Johnny Depp movies are Sleepy Hollow and Secret Window.

I enjoyed this movie more than your average reviewer. I thought it was a very interesting story and Johnny Depp acted great. Wierd ending that made sense but it was just kinda nuts. Nothing too special about any extras on this dvd. Just a good price and decent movie. Worth picking up.
