In 1946, a banker named Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is convicted of a double murder, even though he stubbornly proclaims his innocence. He's sentenced to a life term at the Shawshank State Prison in Maine, where another lifer, Ellis "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman), picks him as the new recruit most likely to crack under the pressure. The ugly realities of prison life are quickly introduced to Andy: a corrupt warden (Bob Gunton), sadistic guards led by Capt. Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown), and inmates who are little better than animals, willing to use rape or beatings to insure their dominance. But Andy does not crack: he has the hope of the truly innocent, which (together with his smarts) allow him to prevail behind bars. He uses his banking skills to win favor with the warden and the guards, doing the books for Norton's illegal business schemes and keeping an eye on the investments of most of the prison staff. In exchange, he is able to improve the prison library and bring some dignity and respect back to many of the inmates, including Red. Based on a story by Stephen King, The Shawshank Redemption was the directorial debut of screenwriter Frank Darabont.~Mark Deming
There are those rare films where it feels like you’re watching them for the first time no matter how many times you’ve seen it before. “The Shawshank Redemption” is one of those films. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman headline an amazing cast in a film that is beautifully directed by Frank Darabont. A genuine classic and the best of them all!
It had been so long since I'd seen Shawshank, I'm so glad I grabbed the Blu-ray. I had forgotten how how good this film is. Truly one of the best movies ever made. Some great bonus features on the Blu-ray, the British documentary is the best of the bunch. The picture quality of the film is incredible.
This is the #1 rated movie of all time on IMDB.com. I was blown away by this movie the first time I saw it. I couldn't believe how inspirational it was! I only wish I had first seen it on a big screen at a theater to experience the full effect. If you haven't seen this movie and you are only going to buy one movie this year---make it this one! It's one of those movies you will want to watch again and again. Thank me later.
Little about me. I absolutely love movies. I had heard so much praise about this film for my entire life. Part of me avoided seeing this movie, worried that it would not live up to the incredible amount of love it receives in so many movie conversations. After watching it tonight, I can honestly say it's as great as they say. Again, I love movies. Especially dramas that can weave their way into your heart, and deeply change the way you see the world. This film impacted me so hard on so many levels. Besides the brilliant script, and the beautifully realized technicalities of the filmmaking, The Shawshank Redemption speaks volumes about friendship, freedom, and society. A must watch. Will definitely revisit this film in the years to come.
Not as grand a spectacle as such timeless classics like Casablanca, The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, The Godfather, Star Wars, or more recent films like Titanic, Gladiator, T2, Jurassic Park and The Departed....but nonetheless a great movie experience. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman absolutely shine in the story and deliver top notch performances in this Stephen King adaptation from Frank Darabont. Their character interaction really invigorates the true heart of the story, and what a magnificent story it is. Its a powerful, thought-provoking & soul inspiring movie, but underneath it all, its simply a life lesson about the perseverance of hope & the testament of unwavering friendship, even in the most dire of circumstances. In watching the story unfold, you'll likely identify something very personal in your own life with a scene, a character, or a moment in this uncomplicated movie. Highly recommended to all. 5 Stars
