Synopsis

Navigate a dystopian Earth in The Surge for the PlayStation 4. You're thrust into a world where technology has made humans almost obsolete, and you navigate the suburbs in an exoskeleton in an attempt to find work. The Surge provides a look at a world where the evolution of technology goes unchecked.

Features

Innovative combat mechanics and an original character progression system based on modular upgrades gained through tight, visceral combat

Set in a heavily dystopian future as Earth nears the end of its life, those who remain in the overpopulated cities must work to survive as social programs become saturated by an ageing population and increasing environmental diseases

As the intelligence of technology incrementally increased over the years, many jobs for the human race had been made redundant, forcing Earth's citizens to head out into the suburb

The world of The Surge offers a very grim vision of the future, where the evolution of our technology, our society and our relation with the environment led to a decadent state of the Human civilization

    A worthy souls like game

Anyone interested in this game should be aware of the Dark Souls and Bloodborne series of games. The Surge is an unabashed take on that formula. Instead of a medieval fantasy setting with zombie like enemies, and huge creatures for bosses, it's a futuristic dystopia with an industrial aesthetic. The Surge uses almost all of the same mechanics that makes a souls game, but with their own take on it. And the difficulty is pretty much on par with those games as well, however I'd say The Surge is a bit easier overall. It's also more friendly to the player. There is less concern with losing your acquired souls, and mechanics and systems are explained much better.Overall I think The Surge comes up short in many ways compared to the souls games. Less enemy variety, less variety in locations, and less amounts of armor sets and weapons. It's a bit more scaled down in terms of overall size and content, but I don't think that necessarily holds the game back too much. It's still just as fun to fight enemies, explore the world, and continuously make your character better. The world is also very well designed so that each new area discovered can still eventually connect to everywhere else. The map is not huge, but it makes very good use of its space. The Surge does a good job of being its own thing and making the combat and character development feel fresh. Fans of Dark Souls and Bloodborne are sure to enjoy this game if they're looking to scratch that souls itch. It's also a good entry game for those new to these types of games.

Great Sci-Fi - "Souls" type game.

If you enjoy "Dark Souls" style gameplay, and want to experience that in a Sci-Fi context, do pick this up. It has a few unique combat features that sets it apart from other "Souls" clones. I really liked the idea of being able to focus on damaging specific body parts on the enemy. The con I can think of is that the zones can look and feel the same. That, and the annoying country music playing in the med area, where you respawn after death. This is what h e l l sounds like. Haha. Be sure to turn the music off.

Giving it 5 stars as it's an overall really fun game and quite challenging. But don't buy it thinking it is going to be exactly like a Souls game. There is no skill point allocation. So everything is based on what weapon you're using and what armor. Your level gives you more carry weight and health so you can put on more stuff. You spend the majority of the game hacking limbs off of enemies to collect weapons and gear.

The Surge was very enjoyable. The combat is more similar to Bloodborne than Darksouls, mean it is a bit faster paced and is more focused on dodging attacks rather than blocking. This game does have a unique combat system where once you get an enemies health below a certain level, you can spend energy to perform an execution. You are also able to target specific limbs when attacking enemies which adds an extra layer of depth to the game play. Defiantly recommend this one.

I had never heard of this game and then one day it was just there and out in the wild. So glad I picked this up. It looks great on the PS4 Pro and runs really well. If you've played Dark Souls or anything similar then you have an idea of how this game is set up. It adds some new things to the mix, like the ability to target parts of enemies and collect material to build armor sets, which is cool. Good pick up.

It’s and interesting play. At first I played it consistently for a couple weeks but it did feel a bit repetitive after awhile. I do wish there was a larger variety of enemies. Other than that, it’s an interesting play. Not worth a full price but if you catch it on sale it should be worth your time if you’re a fan of the Dark Souls formula.

Lords of the Fallen was too slow for me although I mostly liked it. With this one, Deck13 finally nailed it. You got choices to be slow/damaging or quick/less damaging. Collecting parts of exo-suits and weapons are awesome and addicting. Don't listen to those saying the game is not good. They just don't get it.

If you're a Dark Souls/Blooborne fan you'll adapt to the gameplay with no issues. That being said if you're fan of those franchises you might find this game to come up short compared to those games I personally enjoyed it. I'd give it a 7.5/10 .
