Awesome gaming headphones and great for music, too

Quick Overview ================================= If you're looking for a gaming headset, it can be tough to decide for multiple reasons: Too many options and platform-specific needs. Well, Turtle Beach's new Stealth 700 Gen 3 wireless gaming headphones can help you with some of your decision-making because they come with two transmitters for lag-free gaming on PC and PlayStation, in this case. Turtle Beach has a long history in gaming, and I'm expecting great things - let's see how it goes! Overall build ================================= I'm lucky enough to also have their Stealth 600 Gen 3 headphones which I enjoy, so I have some direct comparisons I can make. Right off the bat, the Stealth 700 Gen 3s are heavier and feel more sturdy. The earcups are thicker and wider and have a fabric/faux leather lining vs. the cloth-only on the 600s. The silver arms that connect the earcups to the headband seem to be a mix of plastic and metal which Turtle Beach calls "steel-reinforced" and they do seem very sturdy and strong. It seems like there were some breakage issues on the Stealth 700 Gen 2s, and Turtle Beach stepped up to address them. Being sturdier and including more metal means they are heavier than the 600s, but not overly so. The thickly padded headband supports the weight on the top of your head. You'll notice another difference right away: The 600 only has controls on the left earcup while the 700 has controls on both. On the left side there's a flip up mic on the front. On the rear top, there's a customizable mode button, a volume dial, a customizable volume dial (for mic monitoring, bass boost, etc.), the charging port, and power button. On the right earcup, there's a CrossPlay button to swap between the wireless dongles (for ex. one plugged into your PC, one into the PS5), a BT volume knob, a BT pairing/function button, and a BT status LED. Adjusting the headset takes a firm grip, which I prefer, since it's usually a one-time adjustment. The deep earcups are comfortable for med/large ears and they didn't apply undue pressure even with some glasses on during some sessions. The first thing I had to do was upgrade the firmware by doing the following: Using BT, pair the Stealth 700 Gen 3 with my phone. Plug each dongle into a USB device - I did this on the same PC to make it easy. Install or use the Swarm II app and it should prompt you to update the firmware. Wait a few minutes Unplug each dongle and plug them back in. Power off the headset and power it on again. With that out of the way, let's test! Performance ================================= Since these are gaming headphones, we'll definitely spend time doing exactly that, but first, let's check out some music. I test with some songs I know very well and that I've listed to on multiple devices through speakers, IEMs, or over the ear headphones. With a mix of EDM, Jpop, Kpop, and some "haunting vocals" from different movie soundtracks, the sound on these 60mm Ecplise dual drivers was impressive! Normally, I have a small amp and dedicated headphones connected to my PC for music listening, but these were good enough to serve as gaming or music headphones! Highs were clear and not muddled at all by the thick, layered bass and mid-bass. Using their Swarm II app on the phone or PC, you can choose from different presets or set up custom EQ profiles. On the phone, it recommends using a landscape view so you can see the sliders for all the bands easily. There are tons of other options in the app for customizing the controls, sound, and even the mic's sound profile. Not to mention things like a noise gate to eliminate unwanted sounds from being recorded. Functionally, you can be in-game but take a call via your phone/BT seamlessly, then get right back into the game. Speaking of gaming, this is what it's all about! I was really pleased - as most people would be - with the Stealth 600 Gen 3s so I wasn't expecting to like these Stealth 700 Gen 3s even more! Everything sounds great as I mentioned during the music listening portion, but this improved audio via the dual drivers and larger 60mm drivers made game audio even more impactful. Whether it was going solo in a hearing-intensive game like Sniper Elite 5 or having a fun, wild time in Fortnite, these really helped make the world come alive and make it seem like I had a better edge than playing with PC speakers, for example. Turtle Beach is known for it's "Superhuman hearing" feature and I gotta say, it helped me surprise some folks that were probably looking to get the jump on me in Fortnite! I'm never going to claim that features like these will make you a pro-level gamer, but I feel that they enhanced my experience and improved some of my performance so that's a plus. The mic was great for simple things like in-game or Discord, but they also worked well for Zoom calls and work meetings. I don't think I'd go as far as recording my YouTube videos on them since I have a dedicated mic for that, but I think they're actually nearly good enough. The AI noise-canceling does a great job of eliminating background noise that I could hear but listeners couldn't! I don't know how often you'll need to quickly switch from PC to PS5, but CrossPlay works as advertised! Press a button on the right earcup and you immediately switch over for low-latency gaming on your PlayStation! I could see this complimenting a compact setup if I had my PS4 or PS5 on my PC desk (hmmmm...). Battery life is phenomenal at a rated 80 hours. In 1 week of testing, I didn't even run the battery down completely. I guess I should game more! Lastly, I really like the control scheme much better than the 600. I like how the right earcup is focused on BT (and 1 CrossPlay button) and the left side is for the PC or PS5 controls. Conclusion ================================= Turtle Beach is no stranger to high-performance gaming products and it looks like we have another winner here with the Stealth 700 Gen 3s! Not only do they have slick, seamless connectivity between consoles, they can do that with your phone via BT as well. On top of all that they come with great controls, deep customization via the app, and a comfortable fit for me (headsize is less than a US 8). I think the best praise I can give it is it has helped declutter my set up by being good enough for music that I can remove my amp and headphones that I was using at my PC for music listening. Now I can do it all with just one great wireless headset!
