Synopsis

World War Z
Brad Pitt stars as an ex-United Nations employee racing around the globe in a bid to halt a worldwide zombie pandemic in Marc Forster's sprawling adaptation of Max Brooks' bestselling novel of the same name. Retired U.N. investigator Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) and his family are sitting in what appears to be a typical Philadelphia traffic jam when helicopters began to circle ominously overhead, and an explosion throws the city into panic. In the blink of an eye, the streets are consumed by chaos. When Gerry learns that the catalyst for the turmoil is a highly contagious virus that transforms those who contract it into rampaging maniacs, and that legions of the infected are growing on all continents, he agrees to join his former colleagues in discovering the source of the rampant plague so that his wife and two daughters will be guaranteed safety aboard a UN fleet in the Atlantic Ocean. Upon tracing a crucial e-mail to a U.S. military base in South Korea, Gerry learns that the infection has spread more rapidly than anyone realizes. Although a subsequent trip to Jerusalem, where the government has constructed a massive wall to keep the public safe, initially offers hope that the growing horde can be kept at bay, an unexpected breach sends Gerry back into the sky in search of patient zero. Just when Gerry thinks he's traced the origins of the virus, however, the unthinkable happens. Subsequently stranded in Cardiff with a fearless Israeli soldier, Gerry quickly makes his way to a World Health Organization outpost where the few remaining scientists have hit a dead end in their search for a cure. But the struggle is far from over, and after recalling an unusual scene witnessed in Jerusalem, Gerry prepares to make a leap of faith that could prevent the downfall of humanity. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

World War Z is Brad Pitt's zombie epic about the spread of a virus that turns people into the undead, but instead of walking they sprint and create chaos with every step. Pitt plays Gerry Lane, a former UN investigator who is called into action by an old friend when the human race is on the brink of extinction. While he risks his life to look for a cure, his family (with his wife Karin played by the incredible Mireille Enos) is on a US Navy Carrier out at sea. Nations fall, people turn on each other, and it seems all is lost. But, this is not the case as Gerry begins piecing together clues and starts a search that will change everything, leading to the "war." WWZ is a truly impressive movie, especially considering it's a PG-13 zombie movie. While I do like the gore in a zombie film, this movie proved you don't need it. The zombies were frightening, the realistic science was there, warfare is taken into account, and overall it just felt like what would really happen if the zombie apocalypse happened. Marc Forster's directing was superb, showcasing both the epic scale of a global panic and war, while showing us the smaller battles and struggles that are happening everywhere else. This movie has the perfect transition, going from the massive blockbuster to a classic zombie movie setting. When it comes to acting, it was great. There were only two moments where the dialogue didn't quite match (when Gerry talks to Warmbrunn about the wall in Jerusalem), and even though there won't be any Awards the acting was still great. The visuals were happily polished, being more realistic, especially having both CG and practical zombies, with amazing make-up. You can see my review of the musical score on the soundtrack's page (by Marco Beltrami). But then there is the cinematography. Words cannot describe how impressive it was to see all the locations and sites, especially Jerusalem. Plus, this is only the start. WWZ kick-starts what should and can be a trilogy, just showing us the outbreak, spread and beginning struggles with the undead. There is so much more to come. World War Z is not for everyone, but anyone who appreciates well-made action movies, a thrilling epic, or some good freak-out moments, this is your treat.

Okay, I know this is not the book! When I saw this in the theater (not in 3D), I couldn't get this out of my head, and had a hard time enjoying the film. But when it was on sale at Best Buy for $9.99 in 3D, I just had to get it. I mean it would mean that I would have a Zombie film in 3D. And that's what I got. This 3D viewing I enjoyed! Could it be the 3D? I'd say yes! I didn't "LOVE" the 3D, but I think it was done pretty good. I think the other reason is that I didn't watch it with the book fresh in my head. I found myself getting involved with the story and the characters, kinda, "what would I do" thing. I was flinching and jumping just as the film maker wanted me to. So Yes I'm glad I purchased it. You get the theatrical version in 3D and DVD, and the extended "Unrated" version on the 2D version. This version also has Behind-the-scene featurettes, but no commentary. Also, you have your choice of HD streaming or download from Itunes or Ultraviolet. I'm very glad that Best Buy has put a number of 3D movies on sale and that this was one of them. If you enjoy 3D, and this type of movie, I think you would be happy with this purchase!

One of the best zombie films in recent years

World War Z is definitely one of the best zombie flicks in recent years (assuming you like the intelligent kind). If your strictly a gore hound, look elsewhere. Brad Pitt turned in a great performance as well as all of the supporting cast. I particularly liked his sidekick during the second half who was thrown together with him more through circumstance than anything. What I most liked about the film was that it tried to take a more realistic approach to the whole concept of a "zombie pathogen" and how it might occur in a real world scenario. Granted, things are ramped up to Hollywood proportions for entertainment value, but you don't have to try quite so hard to suspend your disbelief with this one...just sit back and enjoy...which is probably why I've already watched it 3 times, and expect to watch it several more. On a final note, the extended cut was more intense than the original and I prefer that version now, though the theatrical cut works just fine. I'm not really sure what it was that made the extended version not make cut for the PG 13 rating aside from a few seconds of carnage here and there. I don't think it would have necessarily warranted an R-Rating in theaters, but...is what it is. Definitely recommend a purchase.

I remember reading about the major script rewrites, complete reshooting of the 3rd act, budget overruns, confiscation of prop guns, and internal feuding with Brad Pitt and Marc Forster and all of this spells disaster for the film. Sure, the studio tacked on some pretty good 3D, but I felt this was just a tactic to make as much money as possible while taking a big loss. Surprisingly, this film was a huge hit, got some considerable critical acclaim and was the rare exception of a big hit from a mess of a production. It is a good movie, only sparingly using Max Brooks novel as a template, with some good acting, nice VFX and some tense scenes with the ending being a bit of a letdown. All things considered though, a good time at the movies and glad the studio has decided to film a sequel. The picture quality and audio is really good, but sometimes the image looks a little soft, but the audio is intense and loud, just how it should be. The extras are pretty much featurettes, with a good BBY exclusive featurette really good, but only the Unrated cut is in HD, and yet again you either have to buy the 3D set or use the DVD included here to watch the theatrical cut.

This is a great movie, the experience of 3D makes it all the better. I've stated before that Blu Ray movies in 3D are a much better experience at home because of the added resolution and this movie is no exception. The movie in itself is great, but I find it hard to believe that a single man can go through so much (avoiding spoilers so being vague) and accomplish all that he did (of course, within the context in the movie, I don't expect to believe that zombies are real). That doesn't stop this movie from being great. If you are looking for a good movie that includes suspense, actual feelings of horror, the occasional "jump scare" and great 3D effects look no further. The movie uses both types of 3D effects, depth of field and "pop out" effects. I rather enjoy the latter. This film rarely uses foul language and that is a plus, for many movies today find it necessary to include their F bombs galore. Some people cry foul at the movie not adhering to the book, I never read the book, but had it not existed, the movie is great on its own.

I really love this movie and read they are making sequel to be released in 2018 or 2019. Can't wait. This movie was well-acted by Brad Pitt and the entire cast was good. I think his wife could've been better cast as there didn't seem to be much chemistry but all in all, I really love this movie and have watched it several times. I love the CGI effects and the scene (possible spoiler alert) where the zombies pile on top of each other to climb the wall and end up jumping over it, was not only scary and nail-biting but so well done. Never seen this done in a zombie movie before.

This is the combined DVD/Blu-Ray package with unrated extra footage, almost all of which was wisely cut out of the movie as shown in theaters. The only really good addition is a single, one-second shot of a severed arm - otherwise, the theatrical version is crisper, faster, more coherent. The film itself is most notable for having breathtaking CGIs - in this case, the technique combined CGI with live actors in a creative and convincing way. The fall of Jerusalem sequence is unforgettable, as is the "zombies on a plane" sequence. The WWZ book portrayed a long, hard struggle to save mankind, but the movie chose to shortcut the tough work with a stupid and incredible gimmick that allows Brad Pitt to save the world. Too bad. But overall, you've got to see this movie. PS- the Blu-Ray version is only slightly more vivid than the DVD version, so you might not want to spend the extra $$$.

I've never read the book, so I don't know how closely adapted this movie was to it...Brad Pitt plays Gerry Lane, a former UN investigator who travels the world (South Korea, Jerusalem, and Wales) to find a way to stop the "zombie apocalypse." This was a good movie to satisfy the zombie "what ifs?", and I liked how they played homage and incorporated a scene with common zombie weapons (axe or a baseball bat) near the end of the film. The zombies in this film run quickly at humans when they sense a stimulus, show no injury when falling from great heights, and amass in hordes. Even with these qualities, I wasn't as scared of these zombies as opposed to those from 28 Days Later (probably my favorite zombie film). Overall, I enjoyed the movie. If you're a fan of zombie flicks, check this one out! Or read the book before/after (like me haha)!
