Browsing the web plays an essential role in our everyday lives, shaping how we access information, communicate, conduct business and interact with the world. Whether you’re seeking more relevant results, enhanced privacy or simply a change of scenery, knowing how to switch your default search engine is an important skill in today’s digital landscape.

We will guide you through the process of changing your default search engine on popular browsers and devices, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer. You will be able to take control of your online searches and tailor your browsing experience to your preferences and needs.

Why change the default search engine?

Setting a default search engine on your computer or smartphone can offer several benefits, including improved search results. Different search engines use different algorithms to deliver search results. By changing search engines, you may find that you get more accurate and relevant search results tailored to your specific interests and needs.

Moreso, some search engines track and store your search queries, personal information and browsing habits to serve targeted ads or sell your data to third parties. By changing your search engine to one that prioritizes privacy and security, you can minimize the amount of data collected and protect your online privacy.

If you're using Google Chrome as your preferred web browser, you may have noticed that it uses Google as the default search engine. However, you have the flexibility to change this default setting. To change your Chrome default search engine, you can:

  • Open Google Chrome and click on the three vertical dots at the top right corner to open the menu.
  • From the dropdown menu, click on “Settings.”
  • Scroll down until you find the “Search engine” section. Click the “Search engine” dropdown menu.
  • Select your desired search engine from the list. If your preferred search engine isn’t there, click on “Manage search engines” to add it.

Once you’ve selected your desired choice, it will become the new default search engine in Google Chrome.

Changing default search engine in Firefox

You can easily change your default search engine if you're using Mozilla Firefox as your preferred web browser. To change your Firefox default search engine, you can:

  • Open Mozilla Firefox and click on the three vertical dots at the top right corner to open the menu.
  • From the dropdown menu, select “Options.”
  • Click on “Search” in the left sidebar to access the search engine settings.
  • In the “Default Search Engine” section, choose your desired search engine. If your preferred search engine is not listed, click on “Find more search engines” to explore additional options.

Now, whenever you search using the address bar or the search box, Firefox will use your chosen search engine.

Changing default search engine in Safari

If you’re using a MacBook or a Mac desktop, you can easily switch to another search engine of your choice. To change your Safari default search engine, you can:

  • Open Safari and click on “Safari” in the top menu bar.
  • Select “Preferences” from the dropdown menu and click the “Search” tab.
  • Click on the dropdown menu next to “Search engine” and choose the option you like the best.
  • Once you've selected your preferred search engine, close the “Preferences” window and Safari will start using your new search engine as the default.

It's important to note that changing your default search engine doesn't affect the search engine used by other web browsers on your Mac. Each browser has its own settings, so if you use multiple browsers, you may need to repeat these steps in each one.

Changing default search engine in Microsoft Edge

By default, Microsoft Edge uses Bing as its search engine, but you have the option to switch to a different search engine of your choice. To change your Microsoft Edge default search engine, you can:

  • Open Microsoft Edge and click on the three-dot menu icon at the top-right corner.
  • Select “Settings” from the dropdown menu, scroll down and click on “Privacy, search and, services.”
  • Under the “Services” section, click on “Address bar.”
  • Click on “Search engine used in the address bar” to reveal the list of available search engines.
  • Choose the search engine you want set as default. If the option you prefer isn’t listed, click on “Manage search engines” and manually add a new search engine.

Once you’ve selected the search engine you prefer, close the “Settings” menu and your new default search engine will now be used in Microsoft Edge.

Changing default search engine in Internet Explorer

Similar to Microsoft Edge, Bing is Internet Explorer’s default search engine. Luckily, you can easily switch it to your search engine of choice. To change your Internet Explorer default search engine, you can:

  • Open Internet Explorer and navigate to the toolbar at the top of the window.
  • Click on the gear icon (or Tools menu) located on the right-hand side.
  • Select “Manage add-ons” and click on “Search Providers” in the left-hand column.
  • Choose the new default search engine and click on the “Set as default” button. If the search engine you want isn’t listed, click on the “Find more search providers” link at the bottom to explore more options.
  • After setting the default search engine, click “Close” to exit the “Manage add-ons” window.

Similar to the Firefox browser, the search engine you selected as the default will now also be searchable when using the address bar or search box.

How to change the default search engine on mobile devices

Changing the default search engine on your mobile device can further help personalize your browsing experience. Whether you’re using an iPhone or an Android device, here's how you can easily change the default search engine:

Changing the default search engine on an iPhone:

  • Open the settings app, scroll down and tap on “Safari.”
  • Tap on “Search Engine” and choose your preferred search engine from the list of available options.
  • Close the Settings app and your default search engine will be updated.

Changing the default search engine on an Android device:

  • Open the Settings app, scroll down and tap on “Apps” or “Application Manager.”
  • Find and select the browser app you’re currently using as your default.
  • Tap on “Set as default” or “Set as default browser” and select your preferred search engine or tap on “Add new” to add a custom search engine.

Personalizing your search experience for improved results and security

Since some search engines prioritize security features such as encrypted connections (HTTPS), warnings about potentially harmful websites and safe browsing practices, choosing a new default search engine can also enhance home internet security.

Additionally, certain browsers might have built-in tools for refining search queries and filtering out irrelevant results. Customizing your search engine settings on your computer and smartphone allows you to personalize your search experience and make it more efficient. Now with just a few simple clicks, you can chart your course through the digital world with precision and purpose.
