A Letter to Momo - BLU-RAY

Nicholas Nickleby is writer-director Douglas McGrath's beautifully crafted film adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel starring Charlie Hunnam as the titular Nicholas. While shortened from the original inspirational tome, McGrath's film is no less a powerful and moving endeavor. Nicholas, a young man setting out to provide for his mother and sister following the death of his father, will experience all that the world has to offer. Along the way he'll grapple with villains (including a lip-smacking, malevolent turn by Christopher Plummer as his uncle), build friendships, and ultimately find love. The film, which captures both the starkly dramatic and often humorous tone of the novel with deft assurance, offers superb performances from an ensemble cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Nathan Lane, Alan Cumming, Tom Courtenay, Jamie Bell, Jim Broadbent, Juliet Stevenson, Timothy Spall, Romola Garai and Barry Humphries. After losing her parents in a car accident, Okko goes to live in the countryside with her grandmother, who runs a traditional Japanese inn built on top of an ancient spring said to have healing waters. While she goes about her chores, Okko discovers there are spirits who live there that only she can see - not scary ones, but welcoming ghosts who keep her company, play games and help her navigate her new environment. The inn's motto is that it welcomes all and will reject none, and this is soon put to the test as a string of new guests challenge Okko's ability to be a gracious host.

Moving and lovingly crafted effort from Australian stop-motion animator Adam Elliot follows the tribulations of Grace Pudel (voiced by Sarah Snook), a lonely misfit whose fixation with snails was her only solace in a traumatic childhood marked by her separation from twin brother Gilbert (Kodi Smit-McPhee).
