Q: Does the Acer H236HL LCD Monitor have sound
A: It does not have speakers. But it does have an audio out in the back which I have not used.
Q: Is this both PC and Apple compatible and do I need to purchase any other cords for either?
A: YES Works with MAC or PC
Q: Is this Monitor HDMI input or output?
A: There is HDMI input and VGA input. I use the HDMI input. I haven't tried using it with a Cable box with the HDMI -- I think it would work -- but the monitor does not have built-in speakers. However, there is an audio port (standard computer speaker plug) in the back of the monitor so I think in theory, your HDMI cable from your cable box would carry the audio from your cable box to the monitor, and if you plug speakers into the monitor, then I guess the sound should come out. But I have never tried that.
A: Maybe you can and maybe you can't but I've got two of these monitors and I can tell you there are no VESA mounting holes anywhere on this monitor.
Q: does this monitor have a 3.5mm headphone jack?
A: There is a mini-jack on the back of the monitor. Not the most convenient location, but in keeping with the ultra-sleek design.
Q: Does this monitor have a gaming mode?
A: Yes, no. Unlike other monitors/Tvs this doesn't come with a so called "gamemode", but it does come with a mode called graphics which I assume is Acer's version of gamemode. Gamemodes aren't necessarily necessary. They are intended to decrease processing of the image, but more often they are simple visual presets that seem to turn up brightness/contrast, saturation, and edge enhancement. Some manufactures may have better optimized gamemodes then others though...
Q: How many HDMI ports are there? And what is the max resolution supported?
A: 1 each of: HDMI, VGA, DVI
Q: Is this a touchscreen? Please forgive my ignorance if all IPS screens are......
A: Unfortunately no however you could get a logitech or other brand touch pad for your desk and have the same swype capability as you would on a touch screen. Almost a better option when you think about having to reach up and lean over your keyboard everytime you want to use the touchschreen unless your using it at a standing desk, shop workstation or similar setup where the keyboard is secondary to the touch input
