Q: Does it have to be hung in a sheltered place? How is it securely hung?
A: The outdoor sensor should not be exposed to rain, I have mine near a north facing window behind some bushes. I use a wood 'tomato stake' with a pan head screw on the side near the top, the sensor has a clip that slips over the screw head. Avoid direct sun, and furnace / dryer exhaust vents.
Q: Can you place the themometer part in a small metal building.
A: yes. I use it in my pumphouse 40 yards from main house put receiver in window facing pumphouse, works great

A: The outdoor sensor is weather resistant ... maybe cover it with a small plastic ziplok bag for better protection.
A: about size of a small flip-phone
