About this product
Their third album from 1983. Described by producer Adrian Sherwood as Inchexperiments in active frequencies, out of time noises, rhythms within rhythms, and endless tape editsInch. More so than most that make the claim, African Head Charge could truthfully make the assertion at this stage in their career that the music they were making was a genre unto itself, defying categorization. Loose echoes of traditional African percussion music, field recordings and roots reggae inform the mix, whilst some parts conjure up the stripped-back post-rock of Can or Tortoise. Re-cut at dubplates & mastering in Berlin for maximum bass pressure. Includes printed inner with sleeve notes by Steve Barker (On The Wire), and download card for full album.

Originally released in 1986, Off The Beaten Track still sounds forward thinking, forging a new middle ground between dub and electronic music. Programmed chants and unexpected sounds (barking dogs, breaking glass, gypsy violin loops) are dropped onto a fluid rhythmic bed. A landmark recording in the integration of sampling technology and live instrumentation. Features contributions from Jah Wobble (Public Image Limited), Skip McDonald (Sugarhill Gang/Tackhead) and Albert Einstein (the theory of relativity)! Re-cut at dubplates & mastering in Berlin for maximum bass pressure. Includes printed inner with sleevenotes by Steve Barker (On The Wire), and download card for full album.

This is a journey inward. It's about closing the eyes to the world and taking the deep plunge into the great subconscious by the means of rock n´roll. When reality fades a certain darkness sets in. As the eyes adjust the light slowly comes creeping in through the cracks. The mind is a theatre, the brain a silver screen. Shielded from the pollution outside the self becomes operatic. It examines itself in the mirror before it prepares for the stage... for the whispering skull, the kingdom, the horse and the dagger in the heart. A roaring crowd appears. It's the InchmeInch in all it's shapes and sizes. The whole lot. This is the egos own domain crowded by the debris of the world outside. This is the place where the InchIInch go to shield itself from the cold outside; away from categories, from the middle ground, from the void of usefulness and towards the purity of the soul.

2011 album available on vinyl for the first time. Master percussionist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah joins forces once again with dubmaster Adrian Sherwood at the controls and a whole host of guest musicians, including contributions from dancehall pioneer Jazzwad and electronics from Adamski. All the elements of a classic African Head Charge album are present spaced out dub, tribal chants, ecstatic trance, but updated with a rugged sound system undercarriage. Arguably some of the hardest hitting AHC rhythms laid down in the studio to date. Part of an extensive reissue campaign that sees all of African Head Charge's 1990 - 2011 work presented in lovingly put together new editions, a companion to the reissue of the band's early work that On-U Sound undertook in 2016.Side One1.
