  • Rated 4 out of 5 stars

Great story but gameplay is a bit elementary…

If I could give this 3.5 stars, that’s probably the more appropriate rating. I give it 4 here instead of 3 because of the excellent story. The less familiar you are with the Vertigo movie, probably the better. The game is a psychological mystery (literally) about a very confused man dealing with some serious issues from his past. You have to figure out what is happening to him and why. You will control several different characters over the course of the game, not all of them very pleasant. At times you will have no choice but to do some unsavory things. The subject matter is very dark and even a little bit upsetting at times. This isn’t one for little kids. The story and mystery will definitely keep you intrigued but it almost feels like a visual novel at times. That’s because the gameplay mostly revolves around you walking around until you find an object, and then you move on to the next object, etc, in order to complete a section. The order in which you must find your objects/objectives very often does not matter, so you’ll eventually find everything you need to advance extremely easily. There’s not really any puzzle solving and there’s really very little challenge here. The point is simply to advance the story, but at least it’s a very interesting one. You’ll come to admire some of the characters and hate others. There’s even some funny moments. But it’s worthwhile to discover them all. The Limited Edition (I believe the only one available here) comes with a cool art book of the characters and some screenshots, plus a voucher code for the game’s soundtrack, which is quite strong and seems similar to the music from Hitchcock films. Movie lovers will also notice some homages to other films during the game. All in all, I can definitely recommend the game for the story but just don’t expect the very basic gameplay to enthrall you beyond that.

    Alfred

Just ok cinematic story game modernizing an alfred Hitchcock movie. Serious adult themed story was nice but overall too slow and unsastisfying in the end.

Although a little rough around the edges if you enjoy games similar to Dontnod's Life is Strange etc., you should check out Vertigo out.
