Originally formed as a Jazz band in the ‘60s, they would reinvent themselves via funk in the ‘70s and once again in the ‘80s with feel-good Pop-Soul. Continuing on from a decade-long reign on the charts, Kool & the Gang released their fifteenth studio LP, 83's In The Heart, and continued their trend of unashamedly feel-good Soulful Pop music with the positive and inspirational 'Straight Ahead' (UK #15), the gorgeous mid-tempo balladry of 'Joanna' (R&B #1/Pop #2/UK #2), the anthemic 'Tonight' (R&B #7/Pop #13/UK #2) and the joyous love song, '(When You Say You Love Somebody) In the Heart' (UK #7). Also featured here as a bonus track is a rare promotional 1983 Eumir Deodato remix of their earlier anthem 'Ladies Night'. Kool & The Gang injected sentimental fare around their dancefloor-ready hits throughout their commercial peak but In The Heart sees the band dedicate an entire record to the joys and nostalgia of romance. As unashamed as the band had become in their pop leanings, they also embraced adult themes beyond their sharply honed 'Good Time' sensibilities. Closer 'September Love' best exemplifies this with James 'J.T.' Taylor regaling the story of a short-lived romance that could have happened at any time, any place, yet their delivery renders it both intimate and universal simultaneously.

Louisville, KY's Bendigo Fletcher have announced they will their debut studio album Fits of Laughter on Elektra Records. On Fits of Laughter, frontman Ryan Anderson crafts the patchwork poetry of his lyrics by serenely observing the world around him. When matched with the band's gorgeously jangly collision of country and folk-rock and dreamy psychedelia, the result is story-songs graced with raw humanity, wildly offbeat humor, and a transcendent sense of wonder. For help in forging the album's ragged elegance, Bendigo Fletcher worked with producer Ken Coomer (original drummer for Wilco and Uncle Tupelo), laying down the album in nine frenetic days. The album bears an undeniable immediacy, thanks in part to the band's decision to limit the tracklist to eight essential songs (a move largely inspired by extraordinarily lean and iconic albums like Television's Marquee Moon).

Kaloli is the debut full-length LP from Kampala's darkest electro-percussion group Nihiloxica. The album marries the propulsive Ugandan percussion of the Nilotika Cultural Ensemble with technoid analog synth lines and hybrid kit playing from the UK's pq and Spooky-J. The result is something otherworldly. Kaloli journeys through the uncharted space between two cultures of dance music, where the expression of traditional elements mutates into something more sinister and nihilistic. Recorded directly after a concert supporting Aphex Twin, Kaloli captures the vitality of Nihiloxica's show-stopping live performances and magnifies it with pq's honest, powerful production. For five days in September 2019 in Bradford, Nihiloxica laid down the bulk of the album eight synthetic abstractions of the traditional folk-rhythms of Uganda. At the heart of every song is a groove, a drum pattern to be explored and developed. Each takes us through a different rhythmic territory Busoga from the east of Uganda, Bwola from the north, Gunjula from the central region, Buganda.
