Dahveed Behroozi - Echos - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Pianist and Composer Dahveed Behroozi is a San Francisco Bay Area based musician. His focus is in jazz, classical, and new music. He is an active player both as a leader and sideman in the Bay Area, nationally and also internationally. // Behroozi's expansive musical palette comes from a wide array of places that almost seem endless. His musical frame of reference ranges from Bach, Brahms, Schoenberg, Alban Berg, 20th century jazz luminaries, as well as the rock and ambient worlds. // His main focus in music is improvisation. Behroozi approaches improvisation as a form of musical composition. It is within the improvisation, that over time, compositions begin to appear, take shape, and ultimately form. He's constantly striving to find new sounds and feelings in his work, and hopefully take the listener on a multi-sensory landscape, rather than just a sonic one. // Born in CA in 1981, the son of a classical guitarist, Behroozi quickly came into contact with the classical canon, and soon developed a strong interest in Jazz. By his teens, he became an active sideman in the San Francisco Bay Area, and would later go back east to study at the Manhattan School of Music, as well as Brooklyn College. It was during his time in NYC, where he was able to develop his sound and concept by playing and studying with some of the finest musicians. // Pianist Fred Hersch describes his playing as, Inchintense, immersive, emotionally fulfilling and musically deep.Inch Album Tracks 1. Imagery 2. Chimes 3. Gilroy 4. Alliteration 5. Sendoff 6. Royal Star 7. Chimes (Variation) 8. Tricks 9. TDB

Anat Fort Trio - The Berlin Sessions - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The world's pause caused by the Covid-19 pandemic created rifts in regular patterns and collaborations. Pianist Anat Fort found herself effectively separated from her regular trio of bassist Gary Wang and Roland Schneider for the first time in the trio's 20 years of existence. When an opportunity arose to bring the trio together to perform in Germany, Fort seized on the chance to regroup and record an album that goes against the group's typical formula on The Berlin Sessions. Album Tracks 1. First Dance 2. Into It 3. Out of I 4. Are We Still Dancing 5. Fantastic Creatures 6. Two and a Half Continents 7. Enlightenment in Four Dimensions 8. Flying Student 9. Mahavira's Pregnancy and Death 10. More Than One Way to See Things 11. The World As a Human Being 12. Breeze 13. First Drill Blues 14. Just the Way You Are 15. All the Things You Are 16. Anat Fort - The Dreamworld of Paul Motion - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Occasionally, there are musical visionaries who suggest new ways to approach performance and composition. Drummer Paul Motian was one of these visionaries. Though he has been gone for nearly 14 years, Motian's freeing of the drums and folk-like melodies influence the generations that have followed him. Pianist Anat Fort continues to honor his sound and approach, dedicating her new recording, The Dreamworld of Paul Motian, to his memory and highlighting his music, both known and unknown.Fort first heard Motian on recordings by the great Bill Evans Trio. She was immediately smitten with his musical approach to the drums and delved deeply into his catalog. When she moved to New York City, Fort made sure to catch all the Motian gigs that she could. Eventually, Fort began playing with longtime Motian associate, bassist Ed Schuller, and ventured to see if Motian would be willing to play with her.Their first musical meeting would result in Fort's 2007 recording, A Long Story. Motian's enthusiasm for the music led him to propose from ECM Records. From there they remained in touch, performing intermittently. Motian's last performance before his passing was with a group Fort led at Cornelia St. Café. Fort has long wanted to put together an album of pieces written by Motian. She had studied his music and lead sheets from the volumes of The Compositions of Paul Motian, which were compiled and published by Cynthia McGuirl, but she had a hard time deciding on which to record. Concurrently, Fort realized that any project that she took on with Motian's music would require more than a piano trio. She always considered Motian's music as guitar driven, thus she reached out to guitarist and Motian alumni Steve Cardenas to become a part of the project. Cardenas would be instrumental in suggesting tunes and, eventually, assisting with mixing and mastering. For the recording, Fort also en
