About this product
Anita O'Day has long been admired as one of the very best jazz singers of the post-war era, with a rhythmic and dynamic style that she could readily deploy in big band, small group and sophisticated orchestral environments. Acrobat has already showcased her work during the early 1940s with the orchestras of Gene Krupa and Stan Kenton (InchAnita O'Day - The Early Years 1941-45Inch ADDCD3098), and in this collection we focus on a similar period of years during the 1950s when she firmly carved for herself a significant place in the jazz pantheon. During the decade from 1952-62, she recorded for the labels established by jazz impresario Norman Granz - Clef, Norgran and, most famously, Verve - and her recordings during that time are recognised as the most significant of her career. This excellent-value 46-track 2-CD set comprises the complete content of her albums during the first five years of that era - InchAnita O'Day CollatesInch, InchSongs By Anita O'DayInch, InchAn Evening With Anita O'DayInch, InchAnitaInch and InchPick Yourself UpInch, (some titles appear on more than one LP) plus tracks from singles. On those albums she is accompanied variously by the orchestras of Ralph Burns, Roy Kral, Larry Russell and Buddy Bregman, with musicians on the sessions including Barney Kessel, Roy Eldridge, Stan Getz, Shelly Manne, Budd Johnson, Andy Secrest, Jimmy Giuffre, Paul Smith and many more. It's a snapshot of a key era in her career, and a fine showcase for her unique talent working across a range of musical environments. Album Tracks 1. Rock 'N Roll Blues 2. Love for Sale 3. Lover Come Back to Me 4. Lullaby of the Leaves 5. No Soap, No Hope Blues 6. The Lady Is a Tramp 7. Speak Low 8. Strawberry Moon 9. Pagan Love Song 10. Ain't This a Wonderful Day 11. Gypsy in My Soul 12. Just One of Those Things 13. The Man I Love 14. Frankie and Johnny

Continuing a tradition that began with Sweet Sweet back's BAADASSSS song and culminated with SHAFT and SUPERFLY, BROTHERMAN was a blaxploitation film set to hit screens in 1975. Prior to the script being finished, the producers commissioned an original soundtrack to be performed by The Final Solution, a fledgling vocal group from Chicago's west side. In classic Numero fashion, before even one foot of film was shot, the plug was pulled and the movie was cancelled. Dragged around for 30 years by songwriter, guitarist and arranger Carl Wolfolk, the tapes of his life's work have finally been mixed and the soundtrack album has been augmented to include two orchestrated instrumentals intended for the film. Having no stills from the film to work with, the Numero Group tasked Minneapolis' Burlesque of North America to paint a cover that could withstand the scrutiny of any blaxsplotation poster geek. The deluxe single disc set is housed in our standard slipcase, with a plush booklet detailing the known history of the film and the group that created the music. Album Tracks 1. Brotherman 2. Never Coming Back Again 3. Girl in My Life 4. I Don't Care 5. We Can Work It Out 6. To See You Again 7. Gotta Get Through to You 8. I'm Ready for Love 9. One Day 10. Where There's a Will 11. Theme from Brother Man 12. No Place to Run

One of the greatest of all American jazz singers, Anita O'Day shattered the typical Inchgirl singerInch stereotype and presented herself instead as a hip jazz musician, whose skills in improvisation cemented her stature among the pioneers of be-bop and the West Coast InchcoolInch school. Presented here is a classic O'Day album originally recorded in 1977 featuring just a trio as back-up, resulting in an intimate affair that best captures the artistry of this wonderful vocalist. Featuring Merrill Hoover (piano); George Morrow (bass) and John Poole (drums). All selections newly remastered.
