Anthony Ferrara - Early Spring - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Anthony Ferrara for his third album here teams up again with the dream rhythm section of Versace/Anderson/Drummond. Ron McClure who was one of Ferarra's teachers at NYU once commented on this group, InchThis is a four-way conversation between four men who have a mutual respect of the process of making music, always cognitive of the group effort. Had they played the Manhattan phonebook, they would have made it work.Inch InchWhat is particularly impressive about Ferrara is that he not only has a mature, confident and appealing sound, but also is finding his own voice. Ferrara is also a capable composer, penning a diverse set of songs that invite repeated hearings, a huge challenge for any musician at the beginning of their career.Inch (Ken Dryden - NYCJR on SCCD 31938 Cold Faded)

Anthony Williams / SPRING - The precocious and prodigious drummer and composer Tony Williams had already participated in numerous landmark Blue Note recordings including Herbie Hancock's Empyrean Isles, Eric Dolphy's Out To Lunch, Andrew Hill's Point Of Departure, Jackie McLean's One Step Beyond, and Grachan Moncur III's Evolution by the time he recorded his own adventurous debut album Life Time in 1964. The following year Williams convened a stellar line-up with saxophonists Wayne Shorter and Sam Rivers, pianist Herbie Hancock, and bassist Gary Peacock and returned to Van Gelder Studio to record the follow-up Spring. The five Williams originals presented here-InchExtras,Inch InchEcho,Inch InchFrom Before,Inch Love Song,Inch and InchTeeInch- each offer the musicians spacious realms in which to go exploring.
