A: No it is not truly compatible. The iPhone X and iPhone XS Max have Qi charging but no magnets. You could add an adhesive magnet but it still will not be a true MagSafe device. The MagSafe magnetic attachment feature only works with iPhone 12 and later. With an iPhone XS Max it will charge the same as it would with any Qi charger but it will not be Qi 2 nor a fast charge.
Q: is the MagSafe battery strong enough to keep it in place if the phone has a case?
A: Only if the case itself has a magsafe ring built into it.
