Apple - Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter - White

I purchased the Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter to connect my existing Thunderbolt 2 devices to my newer Mac, and it has worked exactly as expected. Setup was effortless; just plug it in and it works without any drivers or complicated configuration. The build quality is excellent, just like every Apple accessory I’ve owned. The connection is stable, data transfer is fast, and I’ve experienced no dropouts or compatibility issues. It’s a simple product, but it does its job reliably and gives new life to older Thunderbolt devices without needing to replace expensive equipment. If you’re transitioning to a newer Mac but still rely on Thunderbolt 2 peripherals, this adapter is definitely worth having. Highly recommended for its reliability, quality, and seamless performance.

I wish there was more clarification about this adapter because it is very specific for Apple's Thunderbolt port and the description didn't really help. I originally purchased this for the new MacBook Pro (with the USB-C port) to connect it to the old Apple Cinematic Display that I have which uses the mini DisplayPort / Thunderbolt 2 (the port on the right in the pic I attached). For Apple, the thunderbolt 3 (left port on the left of my attached pic) doesn't seem to be even backward compatible with the thunderbolt 2/mini display port, even though it should. Thunderbolt 3 laptop should be able to connect with thunderbolt 2 peripherals, like how USB 3.0 ports laptop still works with USB 2.0 peripherals, but not vice versa. Unfortunately, this didn't work out for me. In short, if you want to buy adapters from Apple, make sure the logo of your thunderbolt port matches with the logo of your peripherals' thunderbolt, because the ports physically looks exactly the same. If you are in the same situation as me (new MacBook but still has old Apple monitor with thunderbolt 2 connection), just purchase a third party adapter from elsewhere that converts USB-C to miniDP, because Apple doesn't make this type of adapter anymore.

I bought this adapter to use my Thunderbolt 2 RAIDs with my new MacBookPro (with TB3) while my Mac Pro (2013) was in the shop. It worked great and I was able to produce my weekly TV show on a different system for the first time since 2014. The adapter made all of my TB2 devices available on my TB3 MBP. Now that the Mac Pro is back from the Apple spa I am using the adapter to attach a TB3 G-SPEED RAID to my Mac Pro. So it will work both ways...making it an even better purchase now that I didn't 100% believe it was capable of when I bought it. To spell it out: You can use it to bring a TB3 device into your TB2 world OR a TB2 device into your TB3 world. I am only using it to access hard drives, so your experience may not be the same if you are trying to do something more complicated, just FYI.

I bought this for use with a Lexar Workflow HR2 media reader hub. My laptop only has two USB 3.0 type A ports and a Thunderbolt 3 connection. I use the Workflow which has a Thunderbolt 2 port with the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter and can access the Workflow's 4 card readers at the same time. An individual UHS-II SDXC can read and write at over 250 MB/s with a V90 UHS-II SD card. Most impressive. Definitely an excellent purchase, performs as expected.

This Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter worked exactly as I hoped. It supports Thunderbolt 1 devices. I connected this adapter to the discontinued Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter so I have: Thunderbolt 3 > Thunderbolt > FW 800 > FW 9 pin to 4 pin cable > old Digital 8 HandyCam. I had a number of old tapes with digital home movies I never finished importing to my hard drive back when I still had a computer with FireWire ports. I was afraid tech had passed me by and I had no way to connect to the 19 year old camera. I'm glad the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter works with Thunderbolt 1 devices like my older FW adapters. I'm even more glad I saved those older adapters!
