About this product
When Samuel, a young orphan, is sent to live with foster parents Marie and Clement, he is gradually forced to face the demons that exist both internally and within his new family. Swept up in the motions of coming of age for the very first time - falling in love with the girl next door, exploring hobbies and indulging in childhood passions - he also begins to learn of the secrets his foster family are keeping, leading him to question everything around him. As these questions emerge, Samuel is pushed in and out of crippling anguish, bridging a harsh gap between dense realism and feverish fantasy which leads to a stunning and transcendent final act.

Director Burhan Qurbani's challenging contemporary take on the Alfred Döblin literary classic casts Welket Bungué as Francis, a struggling undocumented émigré from Guinea-Bissau whose earnest bid to carve out an honest living in modern Berlin founders time and again, as much upon his poor choices in comrades as the cruelty of fate. Albrecht Schuch, Jella Haase, Annabelle Mandeng, Joachim Król also star. 183 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack German; Subtitles English; theatrical trailer. In German with English subtitles.
Like the '60s-era South Paris housing project where he's spent his whole life, teen Youri (Alséni Bathily) was named after cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin... and harbored his own dreams of reaching the stars. When the aging structure is tagged for demolition, however, he finds a mission in trying to stave off the wrecking ball-in spite of the outcome's inevitability. Affecting effort co-stars Lyna Khoudri, Jamil McCraven, Finnegan Oldfield, Denis Lavant. 98 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack French; Subtitles English; theatrical trailers. In French with English subtitles.
